CWS - questions based on observations

First of all, I never been to Omaha, but I've watched for years. With relatives who attended both Virginia and Vanderbilt, I did watch the finals, as I did the Texas games, and the games by other teams from Texas.

1. Is it just me, or did the final games seem not as well attended as in the past? And is that because none of the 'traditional' baseball powers with a traveling fanbase was in the finals?

2. What's with all the freaking beach balls? And why store that crap in the bullpens? Seems almost demeaning to the pitchers warming up to have that s**t around.

3. What's with all the 'waves'? I don't recall seeing that in the past.

4. I admit to turning the sound off most of the time; the chatter is insufferable at times, if not most of the time. Am I the only one who feels that way?

I tend to lean toward moving the site of the CWS around, though I can see that you might seriously affect attendance if it's in a location - let's just say Dallas for example - that would guarantee jammed stands as long as Texas or TCU or Tech or Baylor or Rice or Housto or OU or OSU or LSU was playing, but would empty rather noticeably if a 'home' team went home early (I doubt many TCU or Tech fans hung around just to watch baseball).

Do we know when the fall game is? I need to make reservations in Austin!!!

The deal to built Ameritradewalmartmcdonaldsstarbucks Park included a 25-year commitment to leave the CWS there by the NCAA. It won't be revolving to Dallas or Round Rock anytime soon.
The locals in Omaha have supported the CWS over the years, and it should remain there. At some point, college baseball might be big enough to rotate cities, but how many people would be at Dell Diamond if UT was not in the CWS that year?
Most of the CWS seats (this is how it was done at Rosenblatt, at least) are held by season ticket holders of the minor league team there, which used to be the Omaha Royals, maybe still is. All these people are typical minor league baseball fans, just there for the entertainment, unless Nebraska happens to make the CWS.
Each school may bring a few thousand, but the article mentioned they were impressed when Mississippi State brought 5,000 for the finals last year. That's not many for a 25k capacity stadium.
If the final series goes three games, it's on a weeknight, people with the seats may not all go.
How many of each school's fans can go to another state for 9, 10, or 11 days of vacation time?
It has become a financial success due to the support of the locals in Omaha, and the CWS deserves to remain there. It is irritating to sit around a bunch of people who have little interest in either team, and don't like Texas because we regularly drummed their beloved Huskers for years, but it is just something one must put up with.
Beach balls, the wave, etc.? The locals need some entertainment, since they aren't really on the edge of their seat rooting for one team or the other.
The TV announcers? Don't get me started. They usually seem to judge the CWS by pro baseball standards. It isn't pro baseball! Try enjoying the college game for what it is, and quit critiquing every at bat, every swing, every coaching decision, and no, every baserunner does not steal every time. Mute button is often required for these guys.

I also think if they could get the championship series moved back to friday-sunday - that would help as well - even the schools with large followings have a hard time being there for potentially 3-4 straight work days -
I went for the first time this year - for the opeining weekend - saw Texas play irvine and louisville - great fun - would tell all if you have never been and are thinking about it - go it's worth the time and money!!

accuratehorn,

The new park was built JUST for the CWS. The Royals moved to a new park in Pappillion a year or so before Rosenblatt was demolished. They get a few other ball games a year from Creighton and/or NU, but the "season" ticket holders are now just for the CWS.

Last night was great because espn3.com had a feed of the game that bounced around between cameras, not necessarily showing what espn was showing AND more importantly NO announcers , and NO fricking Samuel L. Jackson every 10 minutes with his ******** commercials, in fact NO commercials. They just had the noise from the field mikes and the umps. It was viewer heaven for me. Plus they didn't censor out the players' cussing so I got the real sounds of the game.

Am I the only one whose TV perhaps needs some color correction so that Samuel L. Jackson's lips don't match his freaking purple suit? Come on - say it with me again - freaking purple suit!!!

Beach Balls

I was sitting on the first base side in 2009 when a beach ball came my way and I popped it up behind me.

A minute or so later it came back and a guy on the aisle two rows in front of me popped it.

Security jumped in and made him leave the park, said he could not return for that game.

I was shocked, since it was almost me. Fans around me said there was some rule, which I and that poor guy never heard of.

It was the Tuesday night ASU Texas game, I would have been slightly crazy if it were me.

So how many "season" tickets are sold to the CWS if it is not regular fans of the Omaha Royals? Most seats, some, half, a few?
I used to have seasons CWS tickets for a few years, back in the '80's. You could renew the same seats year after year.
Anybody do that at the new field? How does it work?
And, yes, if I hear Samuel L. Jackson shouting EVERYTHING one more time, I'm gonna throw some mfing snakes on his plane.

How do I become a season-ticket holder?
Unfortunately, the season-ticket waiting list is closed. The list was closed in 2003 and currently has more than 1,100 names on it. There is an annual renewal of 98%, which has led to, on average, 15-year wait. For example, for the 2013 CWS, we awarded tickets to those who signed up in late 1997.

"The conned the voters into building a stadium that is used for two weeks a year?? "

Yup, altho "conned" is a pretty strong word there. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY (insert Mayor Mike Fahey here), was going to be the sap who let the CWS leave Omaha. NCAA, in their most polite Darth Vader voice, told the local folks to build a new stadium or NCAA would shop the CWS around to someone who WOULD.

So yup, except for Creighton and the occasional gig MECA gets to play there, TD Ameritrade is a 2-week a year, $146M rental.

We lived in Papillion so we didn't get to vote on it, but it didn't affect our taxes. We moved anyway. ;-)
