current position evaluations

The last time I was surprised when the coaches asked Roshon to switch from QB to running back and he turned into a genuine stud. Could have started in most programs. Only Bijan's off the charts talent kept Roshon from being a 2 year starter and all conference RB, imo.

Our RB room will not be near as good as last year due to losing Bijan and Ro. But that doesn't mean it won't be above average and by season's end it might be way above average. I think Brooks and Baxter will be better than most expect. Especially since we should have a quality O line and an improved QB.

And if Malik gets meaningful snaps then he adds a duel threat QB which makes our running game even better.
if I remember right Roschon volunteered to be rb without being asked to be a rb. I am not sure if he saw a need at rb or if he knew he wasn't ever going to be a starter at QB. Or both.

Off season gonna off season.
Next up--some photos of regular weight room workouts, statements of how awesome our S&C program is, and how much stronger than the opposition we will be. (projection based on previous years posts around this time of year...)

Need videos of players pushing each other surrounded by a circle of other players cheering. That shows how tough we are!

And the only way it could get any better than that is if a catchy new slogan is coined. A 12-0 season would be in the bag.

Good post. On QBs...the only position that benefits/develops more than OL from experience is QB. So if the OL will be better due to that, I'd argue Ewers will be as well. Card had plenty of potential and played injured but was league average or worse when he played. Adding Arch to the room is not backtracking imo. He may be something special. And Ewers experience will certainly raise QB1 level so I'd hope QB will be a positive. Definitely don't have an experienced backup, that is true. But we didn't have an experienced starter last year either.

I don't really have a prediction on Malik Murphy, but he will be one of the most interesting players for me to watch this year.
There just isn't a lot of talk about him.
I could see him being anything from bad to very good and wouldn't be surprised at any outcome.

I really dont understand this one. Seems like the RB room is stacked and talented?
legend, Jonathan Brooks just had surgery, so that just leaves Keilan Robinson and Jaydon Blue as healthy returning bodies at RB.
So on any given day in the spring we will have fewer than 3 backs, counting incoming frosh Baxter.
Serious lack of numbers is why we had to move Red there plus the extra advantage of giving him reps there.

That’s an interesting debate on experiences impact on position. Maybe you’re right, but I’m inclined to say it depends. We’ve certainly seen QBs get worse as they progress, but that’s likely due to the environment around them. I’d also DBs improve with experience.

With respect to Card, at least last year, he was not League average or worse. He was better than that. You also need not forget he was inexperienced.

Ewers next year will be a good indicator of coaching impact on a player. It is a significant advantage for a young player to work through his poor play without fear of losing the opportunity. QB is a little different too because you can cost your team wins in the near term.

Thanks. Didnt realize Brooks had surgery. I presume they think WR is either full or has room for movement. I just dont see what we have plus whats coming in the summer allows for Red to have any significant minutes. If I am wrong on that then so be it but I expect RB to be solid this coming year.

I still stand by the idea that Red could/should be our next Quan or Devin Duvernay. He should be playing slot at weird times and returning kicks. He's got that build to him where 170-pound CB would-be tacklers just kinda bounce off of him if he gets that opportunity. Another thing about taking him out of the WR rotation is route progression. Wane McGarity once said that going from RB to WR was the toughest thing an offensive skill player would have to re-learn because of the shift in responsibilities and I'd hate for Red to have to bounce around.

Upon watching Baxter in his all-America game and more of his HS clips, I think we're fine with him. He's got better HS tape than almost every RB recruit we've signed since Mack Brown left. Hey, here's a comprehensive list to depress you:
D. Catalon
K. Shorter
D. Foreman
T. Houston
K. Johnson
C. Warren
K. Porter
L. Humphrey
T. Carter
D. Young
K. Ingram
D. Brown
B. Robinson
J. Brooks
J. Blue
T. Wisner
C. Baxter

If I had to go back in time and watch all of their Hudl clips and give them a "how much promise do they have at Texas?" ranking at the moment Spring Practice was about to start, it'd be:
1. Bijan
distant gap

2. Baxter
3. Warren
4. Humphrey (everyone knew he'd change positions, but his Southlake games are friggin' impressive)
5. Ingram
another gap

6t. Most of the rest of the guys, including Foreman who had mediocre speed and moves.

I think Cedric is that good, and we need to start getting ready for him to get a lot of touches.

I really believe Red is flying under the radar. After catching the ball he was good at making moves to get extra yards. The coaches must not want to lose him to the portal so they put him in a place where he can be a weapon running and/catching the ball. He does have that frame where he can break tackles much better than k Robinson. Don't be surprised if he gets plenty of playing time. I like it also that he can motion out to the the receiver spot and run a route. Brooks may not be entirely healthy.

Note Keilan is a senior and gone next year. Maybe Red is the next Keilan.

well, I am hoping Red has better production than Keilan. Frankly, I thought Keilan was going to be great, with his excellent speed, but he has been rather pedestrian. He goes down too easily.

I thought that as well but Sark didn't trust him in bowl game. Weird.
Seems to me Sark sometimes develops tunnel vision and forgets about some of his assets when he is strategising during the course of the game. Not just personnel but play-calling as well. Come to think of it, this probably happens to many coaches/coordinators.

Yeah, he forgets he has a backup QB. I don't think too many coaches do that.

Maaliks should starts.

We we're thin at rb due to injuries. Roschon volunteerd to make the switch from qb to rb as he saw it as a way to get on the field.

None of us know much about Maalik other than Sark thought enough of him to give a ship to. I am not sure how much real work he got this past year of if he just ran scout team. At this point he would/should be #2 on the list because he has been around for a year and certainly should be healthy. He appears to offer a different dynamic than QE. Either way, Sark has to get reps for someone as the 2nd so we dont end up with a Colt/Garret issue again somewhere during the year.

We sure don’t want to be undefeated and in the national championship game this year and then lose after Quinn gets hurt in the game… oh, wait, …

Just teasing of course. BTW, my bad eyesight or dyslexia pulls “leghorn” out of your screen name.
