Countdown to Football

If you search Rick Ingraham Texas Football in Google videos, everything that comes up is about that #20 guy. He must've been special.

Seriously though, I've never paid much attention to the OL in front of Earl. Judging from the highlight videos, they were no slouches.

In business I met Rick Ingraham years ago and we talked a lot about that '77 team, the games and that #20 guy... his name escapes me too. Rick is a nice guy.

Story is during the ou game after QB's McBath & Aune went out with season ending knee injuries, Randy McEachern trots to the huddle and Ingraham was the guy that told him to just hand the ball to #20 and get the hell out of the way.

#72 Don Talbert, the last of the 3 Talbert brothers to hit the countdown

Went on to play 10 years in the NFL, half with the Cowboys

Inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Fame in 1992

I heard that story about Ingram's statement to McEachern. I was siting at that game, and Losing McBath was bad, then Aune blew a knee dropping back to pass as I recall, and it looked bleak. But McEachern settled in and #20 Guy had a solid game>

We need a new thread entitled "Photos to get psyched about the 2015 season opener, but that have nothing to do with the countdown thread and thus don't belong there." :smile1:

Nat a clue...that was in the Cotton Bowl against SMU in the early 50s and the QB is Doak Walker. (note: no facemasks!)

Doak Walker played at SMU in 1947, 48, and 49. UT and SMU played in Austin in 1948, so the photo must be from 1947 or 1949.

I can't find Longhorn rosters from 1947 or 1949 with uniform numbers. For what it's worth, the 1947 team photo has a number 72 in the front row, so maybe that's our guy.

He may be......now, I read somewhere that Texas didn't have any black football players until 1972 or 73. If that's true, explain #87 and #81 on the 1947 squad.

Perhaps the "somewhere" that you read it is this article. Regardless, the only possible explanation I can think of is that #87 and #81 (as well as #41, who looks like he may be black) might have never actually played in a game.

I took a look at the html underlying the picture linked above, allegedly a UT squad photo.

The url of the image linked has the file name as: tiptop25.com/1947mich.png

Uh, I think that's Meatchicken's 1947 squad.

Info on that team, the "Mad Magicians", went 10-0, including a 49-0 win over USC in the Rose Bowl, as No.2 was vaulted over No.1 Domers by an unprecedented AP poll AFTER the bowl games.

Wiki link about the team: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_Michigan_Wolverines_football_team

From that link a photo of Bump Elliott, number 18:
