Speaking of basketball recruits. Scout says that Rakeem Christmas made a surprise visit to a Big 12 school. Anyone have any info?

Bohls has connections within the program and rarely throws out nuggets unless he's on to something.

as an aside, I'm really surprised Christmas' Aunt is letting him anywhere near the OU program after the recent controversies and the history of impropriety shrouding the bball program and university at large.

Back to Corey - how much bearing will Avery and Tristan have on swaying him our way? We could really use a true point. Oh and a true center would be nice.

We need CJ real bad. He couls step in here and start for a team with top 5 talent. We need a PG and it would be nice to have something until Kabongo gets here. Also, would be nice if Barnes could recruit a big name who wasn't a project.

Agree on CJ and reports suggest we are still in the running. if Bradley departs that should do nothing but help our chances.

James for one. Hamilton for another. JCB also.

Not sure how Joseph's teammate leaving HELPS his coming here. Looking at our roster, I don't think he's exactly quivering in his boots about our all-star backcourt.

how can a big name be a project. i thought by definition if you are a big name recruit, you are the opposite of a project. my only thought would be brian boddicker and brad buckman b/c they were both mcdonald's all-americans, but needed time to develop (boddicker his 3-point shot and buckman the ability to play inside).

but regular prospects that barnes has recruited include dexter pittman, matt hill, jason klotz, alexis wagmene, dogus balbay, varez ward etc. His hit rate has been pretty good in that group so far.

thank you tamster.

No other team in the country recruits "big names" that are projects, either. Most freshmen don't start for their teams. There's generally only 1 or 2 Wall's or Durant's each year. How anyone can criticize that part of Barnes is beyond me, and borderline retarded.

However, we have had too many misses in the Chapman and Hill type players lately.

James? Seriously? The same guy that has started for 4 years? Hamilton did more than most freshmen. Brown sat out a year, and was hurt.

Of the three, only Hamilton was a "big name", and that's a reach. You're probably the only person I know that would call him a "project"

Uh, did you see DaMo as a freshman? Probably not, or you would know exactly what I'm talking about. 6-7 and athletic; tenacious. Those were the only things he knew. His backup was also Connor Atchley, not a world beater back then. Who would you have played with that abyss-deep frontcourt? Just because you start doesn't make you not a project. Hamilton...GMAB, guy literally had no concept of defense when he came here or when to take a shot. Just because he played doesn't make him NOT a project. He HAS to play eventually just to learn the game.

For an example of a big name that is a project, how about you try Kwame Brown. Number one rated high school player. First pick in the draft. No grasp on basketball at all. B.J. Mullens is another. Ater Majok at UConn. Hasheem Thabeet also at UConn. Still a project as the number 2 pick and that's why he is in the NBDL. Hell look at Shaun Livinston. Top 4-5 player in his class because he was 6-7 and could pass as a PG. Had zero idea how to shoot or score, and not exactly a T.J. Ford handle either. The list goes on and on. Recruiting is ALL about talent. That is why these guys are frequently what are called "projects." They need so much work on their games, even if they can "play" right away.

Gee, GoHornsGo, yes I actually saw James play as a freshman. In fact I've seen every freshman play since '89, but how that relates to what you're saying I have no idea. I also saw Johnny Moore play as a freshman. Does that count?

You're wrong.

Dex says hi.

So my using James as an example of a "project" that improved has no bearing on the conversation? You must not be talking about what I thought you were talking about then, or you have no idea what you are talking about, because James is an absolutely perfect example.

Pittman is completely non-germaine to the conversation. He was certainly a project, but he was in NO WAY a highly touted recruited. Please get facts straight before attempting to be condescending.

Still looking at 5 schools.

LOI signing period starts next week.

BTW, can the OP or a mod please correct the spelling of Cory's name in the thread title?

I'm going to have to agree with GoHornGo90 on this one. Many of the McDonald's All-Americans are projects (and some remain projects after their freshman year as they declare to the NBA and are picked in the first round).

Heck, North Carolina entire 2009 recruiting class was made up of 5 star projects. They had four McDonald All-Americans: John Henson F (freshman stats: 5.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg), Dexter Strickland G (5.4 ppg, 2 apg), Travis Wear F (3.5 ppg, 2.2 rpg), David Wear F (2.9 ppg, 1.7 rpg). The lone non McDonald All-American, Leslie McDonald was the # 16 SG Rivals (3.4 ppg, 0.6 apg). I think some of their players are going to be fine starting next year, but none of them set the world on fire this year (James Anderson from OSU averaged more points per game by himself vs. UNC frosh class).

Great point, nych. Strickland at least knows somewhat how to play the game, I think he'll be good. Henson is a perfect example of a project. The guy is utterly terrible. He has no idea how to play basketball at all. The Wears were always overrated because UNC recruited them for some reason. They're trash too.

brice,

It is spelled Cory in thread title but the next post, yours, is spelled Corey. Don't know how that happens.

Because the first 20 or so responses came when the thread title hadn't been corrected. No big deal.

Joseph is reportedly firm in his decision when he speaks with Texas coaches, but his family is pressuring him to go with their choice closer to home. I still think that he will be a horn when all is said and done.

As far as time frame, I read somewhere that he wanted to finish out his all star game appearances before he committed. His last all star game is tomorrow in the Jordan Brand all star game.
