redshirting certainly didn't hurt Major, VY, and Colt. Simms, on the other
hand, could have used a shirt. We didn't have that luxury, due to depth
issues (iirc, adam hall was the only other scholarship qb in the 99 season,
and was a true freshman that year as well). Simms wasn't going to sit to
develop for the future while Hall got the backup snaps, and he ended up
starting the aggy bonfire game, due to major's food poisoning.
Next year's situation is different. We have a stud senior starter, and two
upperclassmen backups. If Gilbert is willing/wants to shirt, we have the
luxury of being able to do so. Now, if the coaches aren't confident in Chiles
and/or Harris, or if one of them is changing positions or transferring, that
changes things. It doesn't make a ton of sense to base decisions on what
it takes to bring in a recruit, and Mack isn't a liar like Lester. If Mack told
Wood that Gilbert wasn't going to shirt, it's probably due to one or more of
the following:
1) Contrary to earlier reports, Gilbert wants to play now,
2) Mack/GD don't think Chiles and Harris can cut it,
3) Chiles or Harris told the coaches he will transfer, or change positions
if they don't make a move on the qb depth chart this spring.
Disclaimer: these three things are just guesses. It's also a guess, but I think
Gilbert will shirt.
