Conference & State of Texas teams

Sounds like Holliday was being a whiny little #$%&*

Pretty much! We sit by the visitor’s dugout, and as it all played out we couldn’t figure out what the issue was because all of Holliday’s rankings & ravings took place after Tech was in the dugout and OSU had taken the field. The Ump went to the Tech dugout to toss Beckel, so we really couldn’t figure out what was going on until after the game.

Josh Holliday story…back when Josh was playing for his dad at OSU, we sat on the first base side. Usually by the end of a weekend series we had become somewhat friendly with the opposing team’s first baseman. At one point, Josh as the catcher, started complaining to the ump about some slight/issue, and Tom barked from the dugout “Shut your mouth, Josh!”. Of course, “Shut your mouth, Josh!” became our mantra for the remainder of the series. At one point, a Tech fan heckled, “Hey Josh! Do you call him Coach or Daddy during a game?” And the OSU first baseman turned to our section, laughed and said, “It’s Daddy”. To this day Josh still gets all sorts of Daddy taunts when we play them.

If a D1 team’s quality pitching depth is lousy, they should pick up some good Junior College pitchers. Most may have a lower ceiling than the top High School pitching prospects, but they also have a much lower probability of busting. JC pitchers have a higher floor; they provide decent depth. They’ve already been proven by two years of college pitching.

And there’s the occasional Roger Clemens.

Some of the Texas teams aren't doing so well.

4/6/2023

- TCU is at #38 (they were overrated to start the year)

- aTm has dropped down to #42
- Tech is at #50
- Abilene Christian is at #74 (not bad for them; we'll play them in a mid-week game)

- Rice is at #81 (notice how they suck without Pierce on their coaching staff)
- Texas State is down to #86

- SFA is at #136
- UH is at #148
- Baylor is at #230, behind Omaha and Mt. St. Mary's

If by “for real” you mean streaky, and spectacularly exciting when playing well and stinkeroos when not, then yes, they are for real. The entire Big12 is for real like that this season it seems.
:wvu:
I haven't seen them, but looking at their stats sheet, they have a couple of good (maybe very good) starting pitchers, and some relievers with very low ERAs and WHIPs. Maybe their 3rd starter is an issue? Maybe their lineup? Maybe they've played a bunch of cream puffs?

Their strength of schedule is 80.
Our strength of schedule is 14.

Almost forgot.

DBU is #34. They often piss off and upset a higher ranked team or two in the Regionals. Dangerous ball club usually...

Chop,

Remember that it wasn't just the elite that "missed" on Roger. His only offer was to play DL for North Texas State. Coach Wayne saw him in summer league and told him to come to San Jac and he'd make a pitcher out of him. Years later, I asked Coach Graham what he saw in Roger that others missed - "He was always in the strike zone; didn't walk anybody"

Although I saw Roger pitch in HS (he was #3 behind Rick Lueken (sp) and Rayner Noble in HS) Rayner went on to pitch for Third Ward and be their HC. Rick was another of those "can't possibly miss" Aggie signees that Tom "ruined". It took the Royals 6-7 years to correct the damage the Aggies did to him. Great human being if you ever get a chance to meet him.

Andy Pettitte is a different story. There is a reason Andy went to San Jac and it wasn't his arm.

LSU and their stud pitcher (Skenes) got hammered by South Carolina 13-5
Yep.

The college all-star team they've assembled in Baton Rogue with portal transfers may play 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th fiddle in that slimy conference. Kentucky is #1, So. Carolina probably the 2nd best, Arkansas and LSU probably 3rd and 4th.

Re: Skenes -- that big dude actually impressed me more with his 425+ foot homeruns at the Disch than he did by hurling a bunch of near-100mph fastballs. He'd be an awesome option to pinch hit. Heck, even at LSU, he should be in their everyday batting lineup.

in that slimy conference
...and yes, I know we'll soon be diving head first into that filthy cesspool.

The baseball competition will be very good--very, very, very good. That part is a positive.

Next up:

2 mid-week games against a weaker-than-normal Texas State team.

Then we go on the (short) road to beat the rapists. After which Abilene Christian comes to town, with a yearning for alcohol and an upset (but this isn't basketball...).

Then, that giant sucking sound you hear..., it's the Oklahoma Sooners rolling in to Austin to get their butts whipped yet again.

I think we'll be seeing Tech moving up, Kansas moving down, and most of the rest staying put. I still don't know what to make of WV.
