Colt McCoy's Leadership

There were many factors that led to the high number of INT's last season....young and inexperienced OL, injuries on OL, Colt going thru soph slump, etc. This has nothing to do with leadership. Colt has showed toughness and I believe the team has seen this and is starting to buy into him as the guy. I don't think you can look at a freshman or sophomore QB and say he is not a leader. He is still learning his position and how to manage the game. Once he gets a better handle on those things as he matures into his junior and senior seasons he will be able to better lead his teammates on the field. I will wait until after this season to decide if I think Colt is or isn't a very good leader.

From what I have seen though he does lead by example. He gives everything he has and fights on every single snap. He works hard in the offseason and in workouts. He doesn't get into off the field trouble. He is great in front of the media. He is a spokesperson for the team and the university.

English should have pulled up when he saw Colt stopped. That was a dirty play in my book and I was pissed that UT seemed to just take it and not fight back. The fire was just missing most of the season.

Last season I was ready to bench him in favor of anyone. As I have been able to add some distance from that time I have softened my views some. Colt will never be close to Vince and that is a tough spot for him or any other qb. Yes he played really bad at times, but Vince had his moments too. I think the leadership questions are a bit unfair. You can't measure it like arm strength or turnovers and because it is completely subjective, we fans (not in the huddle) are in a poor position to evaluate it.

We can all recognize that season 1 with Colt was much better than last year and here are some thoughts as to why. First, in year one they ask him not to get in the way. They did not want him to lead, only not to cost them the game. This was ideal for him even though in involved a dummied down offense that let the talent around him flourish. Last year, at least initially, they asked him to do more and with less experience around him. In this setting he had some really bad moments. He made many poor decisions that seemed to come in waves. One mistake led to another and the problem was compounded. With the talent available to him, he did not progress from year one. This is not all his fault.

I think with Colt, we have a hard worker who can't claim to have an above average arm, above average running skills, or even above average decision making skills. He has a big heart and the coaches need to realize that that is the reality of Colt. My fear is that without an established stud RB, the staff will again ask Colt to do more than he can or should be asked to do. There is no reason that Colt can't be successful and even get us back to the BCS, but we can't ask or expect him to become VInce because he can't.

IMO this is the biggest challenge GD has had here at Texas because the options are limited and the shortfalls overt.

the biggest problem was that everybody on the team assumed that Colt would be the leader, whether he wanted to be or not, and whether he has that leadership quality or not. i have no idea the answer to that.

but it's a lot to ask of a guy starting his second season to be the leader. some of the seniors should have stepped up. in Colt's freshmen year, he still had Studdard and a bunch of guys returning from the national title team to take charge and lead by example.

last year, it's like everybody just turned to Colt and said "lead us." that was the biggest problem for me.

the team leader doesn't have to be the QB.

Leadership is such a rare trait.

Ricky Williams was probably one of the best running backs ever, yet I wouldn't call him a leader.
