Colonoscopy

Thanks for this thread. I just made my appt. I've been putting it off but I've been meaning to get one since my father, grandfather, grandmother, and both aunts on that side have died of cancer. I'm 37.

I started this thread mainly to make everyone aware of the fact that the procedure ain't ****. You will feel NOTHING. Just set up your appointment and get it over with. You will feel so relieved after the procedure that ( if you're like me) go to your local bar and drink up.JUST DO IT!

I had a similar experience to Bob in Houston. Prep was terrible but I had the pills so I think I lucked out there...after the procedure Capnamerca says I told him the same story about 5 times. Says I was in the post-op area for about 30 minutes before I really remember anything. I'm only 30 so I shouldn't have to do it again for a while but I think I was nervous for nothing. Worth every minute spent on the commode for the peace of mind afterward.

I was starvin marvin during the prep, which was the night before. I was craving a steak and baked potato in the worst way!! The next day after the procedure, I went to Furr's and slammed!! It's such an easy procedure! I should've done it a lot sooner than I did!

Had it done yesterday. Thanks to the original poster to motivate me to do this for myself and my family. Got a clean bill but will need another one in 5 years due to family history. Easy as can be and I really didn't think the prep was that bad and the procedure was so easy that as far as I know they didn't even do one and simply billed me for it.

Good for you midtown. You hear all kinds of **** about how bad the prep work is and the procedure. But after you hear the results, you really feel liberated.

My mom had hers done. They found a big cancerous tumor the size of a hen egg. That wasn't fun, they had to cut out 8 inches of her colon. But she got over it and that was 12 years ago. She is tested annually and they say that now she is no more likely than anyone else with a family history. She would have been dead in 6-12 months if they hadn't found it. It is critical to find before it eats it waay all the wway through the side of the colon. Once it does that, you are dead, as it spreads all over. So that is the reason to catch it early.

depending on your level of dedication, you may choose my route and have your large intestine (colon) removed and then colon cancer wont be a problem. I can tell you from experience, ulcerative colitis is a *****. get your self checked regularly.

Had mine done this morning.

I have to admit that I was dreading it BIG TIME. At least up until I read this thread. All of you, sharing your experiences, helped to put my mind at ease, and take away a good bit of the anxiety. And, I thank each of you.

Some thoughts, for those of you who have been putting it off, and need to get it done......JUST DO IT!!! It really is a whole lot smaller deal than you mind is making it out to be. The worst part really is the night before. And that wasn't all that bad. I started out Saturday afternoon by going to my neighborhood Walgreen's to get the Fleet Prep, the doctor's instructions said to buy. Empty spot on the shelf. Another Walgreen's, and two HEBs, all with empty shelf spots, and I'm starting to think that either a) EVERYONE in San Antonio is scheduled to have a colonoscopy this week, or b) there is some sort of recall going on. I come home and GOOGLE "fleet prep recall" and what do you know?!?! On December 11th the FDA issued an alert recommending that oral sodium phosphate bowel cleansing products should be available by prescription only. So, I called the doctor's answering service and asked the doc-on-call what to do now. He called in a Rx for a prescription bowel cleansing prep (Movi-Prep, the one referenced in Dave Barry's article), and all was good. It's sort of a lemon-ginger flavor, with salty overtones. Not too terrible to drink.....until the last 1/2 litre (you have to drink 2 total). That's when the taste of that stuff would have gone MUCH better with some vodka or tequila. HEY, they're CLEAR!!

As for the flushing part, EPW was right...it does feel like you're peeing out your ***. Like big time runs, without the cramps. So, all in all, not that bad. Just don't plan to go anywhere, or be more than a few feet from the toilet for a few hours. My doctor was great, and got the "happy juice" just right. Versed. It's a good thing. Went right to sleep, and the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. Within about 20-30 minutes, I was up and walking, like nothing had happened. No pain, no discomfort, no memory of the procedure. I was one of the fortunate ones, and got a 10 year reprieve before I have to go back. Good news to me. No polyps, just a little diverticulousis (sp?), and instructions from the doctor to increase my fiber intake.

All in all, I spent just a few minutes over 2 hours at the doctor's office, and had time to make it to IHOP for what would still be considered breakfast.

If you've been putting it off, don't anymore. I promise you, that you won't regret the peace of mind that comes with KNOWING what is going on in there.

Please get it done, if needed. My dad has Chrone's disease, and my aunt passed away due to colon cancer.

I had it done last month. Only thing I remember is being stoned out of my mind drinking apple juice (after the procedure)!

Had my third one 3 days ago. I'm 47 and had some precancerous thingies removed during my first one, been fine since then. They put the IV in, I blinked my eyes and asked when they would start. The nurse told me they had already done the procedure. Versed and Demerol make it a breeze, never felt a thing and didn't even realize any time had passed. The prep is really the worst part.

If you need one, get it done.
