College of Charleston - BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH

Chop

Beware the Ides of March--said some Roman guy in a Toga to Caesar before he was assassinated... (I'm not an English major guys...)

This Ides of March, we face the College of Charleston Cougars. As for the college itself, if you took SMU, TCU, or Pepperdine, shrunk them in 1/4, made their female % even higher, and plopped them into converted 200 year old mansions and other buildings on the peninsula in Charleston--that would be College of Charleston. A small private liberal arts school for well-heeled and $$$$ Southern young ladies. I also understand that, in recent years, they have been attracting $$$$ Yanks who perhaps didn't get into an Ivy League school and wanted to try college at a fun school down South, surrounding by other wealthy kids.

When it comes to baseball...

While they are not Arkansas or the old-time USC teams, they only lost to Clemson 2-1 (Clemson swept the Gamecocks...), so you can't laugh them off or take them lightly. There's also something to like about college baseball, in that a College of Charleston can take on a Texas, Clemson, Miss. St, etc., with something more than a pipe dream chance of winning. NJ. Inst Tech made the playoffs last year after all -- you won't see that in football or basketball. More on that 2-1 pitchers duel vs. Clemson here: Clemson Edges Cougars, 2-1, in Pitcher's Duel - College of Charleston Athletics -- Pooser was C of C's pitcher in that pitcher's duel and held Clemson to 2 runs in 5 innings of work. More on Pooser below. (I bet Pooser will start against us)

So who will take them mound for the Chas-Town Cougars?

In their last mid-week series (2 games against U. Penn), they pitched the following:

Pooser..................4.2 innings (starter)
Brooks.................3.0 innings (starter)
Smith...................3.0 innings (frequently used closer and middle/late reliever)
Parris....................2.1 innings (frequently used middle reliever)
Williams................1.2 innings
Miller.....................1 inning
Bice.....................0.1 inning
Schultz................0.2 innings (closer)

In their last Tuesday game, Pooser was the starter and Smith came in for 3 innings of middle relief. Schultz appears to the the closer, and Parris is also used a lot in middle relief.

The following pitchers pitched this past weekend (so we won't see the starters, but we may see some of these relievers):

Campbell.............6 innings
Good....................5.1 innings
Brooks.................3.2 innings
Parris...................2.2 innings
Bice.....................2 innings
Privette...............2 innings
Vaks...................1.1 innings
Schultz................1 inning
Parris...................1 inning
Smith...................0.1 innings
Mathis..................0 innings

So, I think it's likely we may see some of Pooser, Smith, Parris, Schultz, and/or maybe Brooks.

Trey Pooser
RHP
6'3" 195 lbs
1.08 ERA
17 Strikeouts
6 Walks

Last year:
4.67 ERA
46 Strikeouts
Only 1.61 walks per 9 innings

Pooser gave up only 2 runs against Clemson in 5 innings, and he struck out 7 Clemson Tigers in those 5 innings. Other than that, nobody has scored against him this year. Last year against Alabama, he struck out 4, but allowed 5 hits in 4 innings of pitching. His numbers show that he has good control, but can be hit.

"The Hanahan High School product scattered two hits, surrendered one walk and fanned eight batters to help the Cougars hold on for a 5-3 win. He pitched his way out of several jams including a second and third situation with two outs in the sixth."

One scouting report (linked on a UNC-Wilmington board) states that Pooser likes to go high in the zone with his fastball: "...Trey Pooser (who stands out for his ability to spot up with his 88-90 [mph--as a Freshman] fastball)"

[Folks: it's hard to find much more "inside baseball" on this guy...]

Michael Schultz

RHP
Closer
8.10 ERA
2 Strikeouts
3 Walks
1 Save

Pitched in 13 games last year. Usually comes in to close, or otherwise late in game for 1 inning. Fastball in the lower 90s--maybe higher. Ugly ERA early in the year due to low # of innings pitched and 1 bad outing.

"Michael Schultz (2020, Vienna, Va.) has a low-effort delivery and he was methodical throughout his five innings. He fanned nine hitters during his five innings of work, walking one and scattering three hits. He has well above-average arm speed and should have an easy jump as he learns to get over his front side consistently. His fastball showed deception at the top of the zone getting some bad swing and misses and worked up to down landing his 75-78 curveball to his glove side at will. He has a developed frame, but the stuff will continue to tick up as he gets stronger."

Reed Parris
RHP
0.75 ERA
15 Strikeouts
2 Walks

Parris is a workhorse middle reliever, and, while he pitched a few innings this past weekend, we may get to see him. Grad transfer from the University of Mount Olive (the Mt. Olive in North Carolina, not Israel). At Mt. Olive, heading into the regionals he has 77 Strikeouts and 10 walks. (Another good control pitcher -- he's gonna make you swing the bat and hit him, or strike out).

He's got some natural drop on his fastball, and won some accolades and award in Div II ball at Col. of Mt. Olive (NC). He has struggled with some injury problems, including his back.

Seems like a good fellow off the field.

(this face says: "I have equal parts amusement and
disdain for your pathetic, weak little bat...")

Ryan Smith
RHP
4.76 ERA
1 Strikeout
3 Walks

Another reliever who's usually good for 1-2 innings of work and appears frequently as a closer or mid-to-late reliever. Made 18 appearances out of the bullpen last year, and pitched in relief against Penn during C of C's last mid-week series. Good chance we'll see him for a few innings. Had a 2.45 ERA last year as a frequently-used reliever (both as a middle reliever and a closer). Not a power pitcher; fastball shows "some arm-side run and sink", works the curve/breaking stuff frequently. Pitched for a Technical College before coming to C of C.

"On the mound, works through a ¾ arm slot, arm is quick and loose, throws slightly across body, fastball sat 81-84 mph [back in high school] and showed some arm-side run and sink, showed a curveball that he got under a few times, frame projects and arm works well, one of the top few arms seen to date in the 2017 class with very good upside."

Comes from Hazard, Kentucky--one of the roughest, toughest places in the Appalachian coal fields. That town was the site of some of the bloodiest labor unrest in US history. His social media presence indicates he's actually a really nice guy, and very serious about his religion.

Daniel Brooks
RHP
6'7" 245lbs
4.58 ERA
24 Strikeouts
7 Walks

If Pooser doesn't start against us, Brooks probably will. Huge guy 6'7" 245lbs. #1 High School Pitcher from So. Carolina in 2021. Was already throwing up to the mid 90s in high school, now probably topping off in the high 90s.

Big, Strong, Power pitcher with his fastball, and works it with his change up (a pitch that at least one scout thinks he telegraphs a bit, but "turns it over well").
Also has a decent curveball.

"Daniel Brooks is a 2021 RHP/1B with a 6-8 235 lb. frame from Mount Pleasant, SC who attends Bishop England. Extra big and tall young athlete with plenty of physical projection remaining. Step by step delivery, arm works well to a 3/4's arm slot with good extension, gets out front well at release. Fastball topped out at 93 mph with more potentially there as he continues to mature physically. Showed good depth on his curveball when he got on top of it out front, tends to get under it occasionally at release. Slows his mechanics down at release on his developing change up, turns it over well. Good athlete for his size, 7.28 runner in the sixty. Right handed hitter, wrapped barrel start with a drift into contact, well controlled swing, hits the ball out front well with some power and leverage. High ceiling young pitching talent. Good student, verbal commitment to College of Charleston."

Zach Williams
LHP
Grad Student
4.07 Career ERA
40 Career Strikeouts
30 Career Walks

Pitched for an inning or so in both games of C of C's last mid-week series, so we may see Williams. Williams both starts and relieves. He's a decent, non-flashy, yeoman-like workhorse with a lot of experience, and is well-trusted by this coaching staff. Not too bad, but not that great, C of C will turn to Williams a lot to just get the job done. He's also a left-hander when the coach wants to match a certain batter(s) against a lefty. He throws his fastball up to the low 90s. His dad played football at Georgia.

One scouting report (linked on a UNC-Wilmington board) states that: Williams throws an "88-90 [mph] fastball and good changeup..."

Pretty much feels like Chop should be writing these previews for the Texas Athletics Dept. Here is their preview and game notes for Charleston tomorrow and Citadel on Wednesday.

Thanks, I think...

I just try to pick out the opposing pitchers we are most likely to see. From there, it's real easy to quickly find publicly-available info on them and paste it.

:bevo::bevo::bevo:

If we can't get hits off of a dude named Pooser, then we are doomed. Doomed I say.
Ha!

:lmao::lmao:
:beertoast:

Although, Pooser was on fire against Clemson earlier this year. 7 strikeouts and allowed just 2 runs in 5 innings of work. Clemson swept South Carolina, so they've got some bats...

Thank you. I used to have to scour the internet and find less than 1/2 the info you post. I still post the previews almost out of force of habit and not because they are needed anymore now that we have the outstanding work you do. Keep it up!

So it's DuPlantier vs Pooser

Pooser's pretty good, but I think we win--provided that DuPlaintier doesn't load 'em up and give up a grand slam again. When DuPlantier's on, he's really on. But boy, that grand slam still sticks in the back of my head... Time to turn the page and write the rest of the book.

Our bats have to be functional. Be patient at the plate. Take what he gives us.

Go Horns!!!

College of Charleston has 3 studs at the plate (JT Marr, Harlan, and Choboy), 2-3 decent hitters (Hall--power hitter, Sorrentino, Dean), and a significant drop off towards the bottom of their lineup. Not an uncommon mix... Actually, one we're quite familiar with...

Marr..........0.419............0.463.............0.565
Harlan.........0.340............0.515.............0.520

Bullet point notes from C of C website:

  • Junior Trotter Harlan has been an on-base machine so far this season with an on-base percentage of .515 through 16 games. The Fountain Inn, S.C. native has reached base in 27 of the last 28 games dating back to last season and is currently second in the nation with 18 walks.
  • Redshirt freshman Preston Hall had a weekend to remember against the Riverhawks reaching base eight times while driving in six runs, including four in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • The Cougars have terrorized opposing batteries so far this season entering the week ranked ninth in the nation tied for the CAA-lead with 36 stolen bases through 16 games. Three Cougars have swiped at least six bags thus far including a league-best 10 by Trotter Harlan. [Chop comment--Silas Ardoin will be tested]
  • Charleston's pitching staff comes into the week leading the CAA in both total strikeouts (152) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.89) while also ranking second in opposing batting average (.231) and ERA (3.90).
  • William Privette, Reed Parris and Luke Vaks have been superb out of the 'pen thus far combining for three earned runs in more than 30 innings of work while fanning 39 batters. Parris has been nothing short of spectacular in 12 innings over five appearances with a 0.75 ERA and 15 strikeouts. Privette sports a 1.06 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 17 innings of work and ranks second in the CAA with a WHIP of 0.76.
  • Senior infielder Cam Dean continues to make the most of his opportunities at the dish entering the week tied for the team-lead with 11 RBI including a squad-best six with two outs. The Surfside Beach, S.C. native is batting .462 (6-for-13) with runners in scoring position and plated two runs with his first home run as a Cougar in Sunday's series-clinching win over UMass Lowell.

Ok, here's a reliever that C of C's website specifically mentioned in their preview of tonight's game (hint, hint):

William Privette
RHP
6'6" 205 lbs
1.06 ERA
21 Strikeouts
4 Walks

One of the most frequently used relievers on their team.
Strikeout pitcher.
Fastball in the low 90s.
Good movement on breaking stuff.
Has been called for balk(s).
Struck out 6 Clemson Tigers in relief of Pooser in that 2-1 pitchers' duel.
Crushed his Summer League, playing for the Lexington County Blowfish.
Lexington_County_Blowfish_logo.png

"Sophomore William Privette has been unhittable to begin the season entering the week ranked second in the nation with a WHIP of 0.14 (looks like it's up to a whopping 0.76 now...). The 6-foot-6 right-hander has allowed only one walk while striking out 10 batters in seven innings of work thus far. He currently carries a scoreless streak of 12 innings dating back to last season."

And here's another relief pitcher that C of C specifically mentioned in their preview of tonight's game:

Luke Vaks
6'1"
190 lbs
RHP
0.00 ERA (only 2.1 innings pitched)
3 strikeouts
2 walks

Throws fastball in the low-to-mid 90s with plenty of movement.
Lives low in the zone, preferring to hit the bottom corners of the strikezone.
Effective Slider
Good Sinker
New Jersey guy
Transferred from Old Dominion

"He throws from a mid three-quarters arm slot that creates lots of movement on a steady ... fastball that he threw consistently to the bottom of the zone for strikes. He judiciously mixed in a ... true slider at key counts effectively and showed some polished feel for pitching over his five-inning stint. It's easy to see him as a quality sinker/slider starter at the college level, especially as he adds more strength. Vaks is not committed at present."
