Coaching News and Rumors

I just don't know if they can recruit up there any more. Frost was theoretically a home run hire. Proven record as a HC (not Power 5 though). Direct ties to former glory days.

What happaned?
Good point.

I bet Campbell could recruit better at Nebraska than at ISU. And he made ISU a TOP 25 team most years.

Feldman's candidates to replace Scott Frost at Nebraska

Lance Leipold - KU
Good coach, with a really good record at lower levels. Hasn't done enough yet at a high level though. But..... Saturday Blitz has Leipold as the #1 candidate*

Kleiman - KSU
Pretty good, but not thaaaaaat good

Jake Dickert - WSU
who?

Jamey Chadwell - Coastal Carolina
now here is a young rising star
But like Leipold, he hasn't done it big at a big platform yet...

Nebraska Football: Coaching Candidates to Replace Scott Frost

Athlon weighs in with more candidates to replace Scott Frost:

Troy Calhoun -- Air Force
well, he'd resurrect Nebraska's option attack I suppose...

Alex Grinch -- USC DC
his name was batted around a lot when HC positions opened up last year and the year before.

Sean Lewis -- Kent State
who?

Jeff Monken -- Army
see Calhoun of Air Force above

Matt Rhule - NFL
he'd be great, but good luck getting him

*** Dave Clawson - Wake Forest ***
Now this would be a very good pick. A very, very good pick.

Dave Doeren -- NC State

*** Luke Fickell -- Cincinnati ***
Another excellent pick, if they can get him. Has Nebraska's luster gone away so much that a mid-major coach wouldn't want to bolt for NU? Is Fickell holding out for the Buckeyes? Or is he satisfied at Cincy and wants to try his luck in the Big 12 with Cincy? Or does he view Nebraska as a sub-par platform nowadays...?

Bronco Mendenhall
bad choice

Dave Mullen
Nope

Deion Sanders
I doubt it. Massive culture shock as well.

PLease, please, please let them hire Bill O'Brine. Mr Personality. O/U on first clash with Trev 12 minutes after introductory press conference. The guy gave Tom Herman lessons in how to deal with other people.

Speaking of good people persons…
Maybe they’ll hire Mackovic.
He’s got an Ohio background—which apparently is the gold standard in the Big 10.

Matt Campbell is the logical choice, because after Texas/OU bolt for the SEC, new TV money for the "Big VIII plus neverwas wannabes" will be puny. He has proven he can recruit to his needs and develop talent, two things necessary to get and stay above .500, which is Nebraska's first step.

You make some good points.

The lingering elephant in the cornfield (corn as high as an elephant's eye...) is whether the really good coaching candidates would even want to go to Nebraska any more. Nebraska used to be one of the great storied programs in the college game. But they've fallen so far, and for so long, would a top coaching prospect go to Nebraska or hold out for something better...?

Could be looking more and more like one of the top regional Great Plains coaches like Leipold of Campbell...?

They should at least send feelers towards Clawson and Fickell. But would they even be interested?

:huskers:

Nebraska does have this going for it:

The Big 10 West isn't all that...

If you build a good program at Nebraska, you could be playing aOSU or Michigan 2 out of 3 years for the Big 10 conference championship.

(Old news alert)

Not sure how this one slipped through the cracks late last year, but...

Are there any high school players who actually remember when Nebraska was to be feared in football?

Chop,

I do not see Nebraska ever returning to being a powerhouse. Consider the things that made Nebraska great:

1) admission requirements (can you say your name)

2) 200+ players on scholarship

3) Steroids for breakfast, lunch & dinner, plus IVs at night (poster boy Dean Steinkhuler)

4) No moral screening or requirements

5) Degree programs that would make a middle school blush

As Deloss once said to me, "They bring nothing to the table. There are more TVs in West Harris County than the entire state of Nebraska, and all those up there are at the games."

That said, unless Iowa State gets an invite to the BigTen, they will become an afterthought of today's equivalent of the SunBelt.

Their main Big 10 West competitions are Iowa, Wisconsin, NW, and U of I. That’s a division a good program could ultimately dominate.

LC
I have seen Stoops name on some national "guru"board
Campbell and Stoops are the 2 I have seem most often.
Where is Stoops?

Nebraska needs something to sell recruits on and I don't know what that would be right now
Their glory days are too far back to matter
