Coaching News and Rumors

AC,

Lamar has been in contact with and is considering Art Briles. Supposedly he is interested. This is a school that is half a mile from the old Spindletop Hotel, which featured a complete casino in back, and Yvonne's next door, where Johnny & Edgar Winter played on occasion when they were young teenagers.

Places around there garnered 560+ indictments, and ZERO convictions. All represented by a single defense attorney; graduate of The University of Texas School of Law.

He would defend another high profile murder case 3-4 years later.

Well, Sounds like they didn’t wait for a noon press conference as reported they would do by the announcers in the Memphis vs Cincinnati game.

No way Norvell would turn down the FSU opportunity for one of the also-ran SEC programs. I think Norvell brings a ‘high floor.’ His teams will probably never suck. In that league he may challenge for the league title frequently and make some runs in the playoffs. Good match, I think.

Was his name Racehorse Haines? My dad graduated from UT Law in the 60’s and used to talk about him.

Kiffin to Ole Miss -- it's a done deal.

Norvell to Florida State -- it's a done deal.

Arkansas -- Still just rumors. Butch Davis enters the field of multiple contestants. The pigs heavily courted Kiffin, but lost to the hated Rebels. A possibility floating around is to hire on interim coach Barry Lunney, Jr., at least for a year or two (then possibly renew the search next year if Lunney doesn't produce).

The "Pig Trail Nation" swine were saying that (now Kiffin has gone to a rival) it's down to Lunney Jr., Drinkwitz (Sun Belt Champion App. State), and Bryan Harsin (a familiar name, now at MWC Champion Boise State). Drinkwitz has strong State of Arkansas ties, graduating from Arkansas Tech, and coaching at some Arkansas high schools. We all know about Harsin.
Arkansas’ Search Appears to be Down to 2-3 Candidates

But...............enter Butch Davis into the mix. Davis played with the pigs and coaches FIU. Bruce Feldman also said that Butch Davis "is tight with the influential Tyson family"... Davis is much older than the other hog candidates.

Boston College -- Some names being thrown around to replace the recently-fired Steve Addazio include Fickell, Jeff Hafley (aOSU co-DC), Al Washington (aOSU LB coach), and even Mike Elko (aTm DC). Not sure if Fickell would say yes if offered, as he may hold out another year or two for an opening in the Big 10. BC really isn't much of a step up from Cincinnati.

USC -- As previously reported, the Trojans are sticking with Helton. But according to some, they courted Stoops, but the talks broke down over $$$.

Johnny Tyson owns the Promises devolpment in Springdale. It is invitation only country club and invitation only to buy a lot.

Butch Davis already has a house in the development, which is more than can be said for previous coaches except for Gus Malzahn. Plus Davis already has access to Tyson’s fleet of planes which occupy three private hangers at XNA

That’s just the sort of personal connection that makes things happen. Not sure if Davis is the best they can do at Arkansas, but it sounds like he has an inside track. The pigs could certainly do a lot worse.

More on new Arkansas coach Sam Pittman (2 t's):

He served as "Associate Head Coach" in 2019, as well as OL coach, for the Georgia Bulldogs. Pittman coached the Hogs OL from 2013-2015 before moving to Georgia, and really pissing off Bielema in the process. Pittman has put 8 OL in the NFL since 2013, including 2 first rounders. He's an Oklahoma native. Looks like a solid, though unexpected, hire. Look for the hogs to play some traditional smash mouth football with a big focus on the trenches. Worst case scenario (for the hogs) is that he becomes the swine's version of aTm's Coach Sherman--a guy who really knows the OL, but isn't much of a head coach. Below is his coaching history:

Coaching Experience:
1987-88............................. Princeton (Mo.) High School (head coach)
1989-90................................ Trenton (Mo.) High School (head coach)
1991.................................................... Hutchinson (Kan.) CC (off. line)
............................................................................ 1992-93 (Head Coach)
1994-95............................................ Northern Illinois (Offensive Line)
1996....................................................... Cincinnati (Off. Tackles/TE’s)
1997-98....................................................... Oklahoma (Offensive Line)
1999............................................. Western Michigan (Assistant Coach)
2000............................................................... Missouri (Offensive Line)
2001.................................................................. Kansas (Offensive Line)
2003.................................................... Northern Illinois (Off. Line ‘03)
............................................................... 2004-06 Assistant Head Coach
2007-10................................................ North Carolina (offensive line)
.......................................................... 2011 (Associate Head Coach/OL)
2012........................................................... Tennessee (Offensive Line)
2013-15......... Arkansas (Asst. HC, Offensive Line, Recruiting Coord.)
2016-2018....................................................... Georgia (Offensive Line)
2019................................................. Georgia (Associate HC / Off. Line)

Missouri to hire Eli Drinkwitz from App. State as their new HC.

Drinkwitz is 38 years old, and has held position coach or coordinator positions at Auburn, Ark. St., Boise St., and NC State, before his one year stint as the HC at App. State. He's a branch on the coaching trees of Malzahn, Harsin, and Chizik. His hometown: Norman, Oklahoma.

Missouri -- will hire Eli Drinkwitz (App. St) as their new HC.

So. Florida -- looks to upgrade their head coaching with Jeff Scott--the Clemson co-OC. (nothing official yet)

Memphis -- is taking a hard look at Barry Odom (Missouri) to replace Norvell. Va. Tech has also been in pursuit of Odom as a possible new DC.

Colorado State -- the Rams are casting a wide net, mostly across the West, and are looking at aOSU asst HC Tony Alford, Jim Leavitt (former Oregon DC), Todd Graham, Jim L. Mora (former UCLA and Seahawks), Steve Sarkisian (former USC and Washington), Chris Kiffin (49ers asst), Nick Rolovich (Hawaii), and Jeff Tedford (Fresno State, former Cal).

Kendal Briles is getting some buzz as a potential FAU HC or as an OC at Ole Miss under Kiffin. He has other options as well.

Mike Bobo (Colo State, fired) may be heading to So. Carolina as the new OC (nothing official yet).

Billy Napier (La. Lafayette) has gone from Ole Miss' reported darling, and a possibility being thrown out for Arkansas and other coaching jobs, to out of the rumor mill in recent days. Rajin' Cajun admins are reportedly ponying the $ to bump up Napier's assistant coaches' salaries, and taking other steps to keep Napier happy. He has strong ties to the States of So. Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. He also coached for a year at Colorado State, and they are in the market. Napier's overall HC record is 17-10. IMHO, he's not at the level (yet) of many of the other names being batted around in the major college coaching rumor mill.

Why are we not considering Kendal as our OC?
Great question. Sins of the father maybe? He was on that Baylor staff.
Some may not remember, but Kendal was a Horn. Played quite a bit as a freshman.
Also a great high school player at Stephenville, and Frenship. He had a legendary game in the championship against PNG, a VY type game where he played DB too.
I think if his background is clear, he wasn’t involved in the terrible decisions his father was making, I think he would be worth a look.

Better Kendall than Graham, and if he brings his old Horn roommate as Special Teams coach even better.

My mind's a bit fuzzy, but I know he was in trouble when he was a student and I think suspended some games. Like his father, I'm not sure he's an example of character.
I'm not sure Kendal is the right choice for OC but, worries about character probably get in the way of somebody coming to Texas and simply coaching football players to be the best they can be. As I've said in other posts, Texas is going to continue to not win conference titles with the current mood/effort/hoops required to come coach here.

Texas is never going to compromise its standards...nor should we.

More rumors and buzz from today:

Colorado State -- Butch Jones (Bama "offensive analyst", formerly HC of Tennessee) is getting a lot of talk in the rumor mill as a potential Rams HC.

Ole Miss -- with a strict, no-nonsense, all-business guy like Kiffin taking the reins :rolleyes1::smokin:, I'm sure there won't be much tolerance for a player acting like a peeing dog in the endzone. (All joking aside, that was a really f*#&ing stupid stunt that player pulled).

"dawgsports.com" is characterizing Ole Miss as taking "a laissez faire approach to rules enforcement", which is allegedly part of the Rebel appeal to Kiffin. (just their opinion of course, and that of a conference rival)

UTSA - as reported above, Jeff Traylor will be the new HC--the Roadrunners' 3rd head football coach ever.

FSU -- Norvell wastes no time, grabbing Auburn's OC Kenny Dillingham (29 years old) for the Noles.

Auburn -- the buzz is just beginning as AU tries to replace departing OC Kenny Dillingham. Fired Arkansas HC Chad Morris is a possibility being thrown around as a potential new Auburn OC. Unless the new Auburn OC comes with a good QB, I'm not sure how much good he'll do them. Auburn needs to make the right move here.

IMHO, Auburn is in roughly the same place LSU has occupied until the last year or so--a very good defense with a very pedestrian offense. Brady and crew have shown everyone how quickly they can make that sort of team into a champion. Of course, it takes a good QB, a really good QB...

Texas will never be elite, then. I'm not sure if it's cheating that I'm talking about, there just seems to be "extra" here that turns some major recruits away. If it's blatant/extra? cheating then I agree we don't want that (clean program-ish) but if it's "snootiness" or lack of commitment to focusing on football, then I don't see why Texas cannot change a bit...
