Coaching Carousel 2025

Would have been shocked if Mizzou didn’t make a change. I never liked her because of what she said when she was introduced as their coach. Perhaps Liberty U needs an assistant coach

I totally get that, and have felt the same way about her.

Hearing that Kellie Harper is a candidate for the Missouri job. She had success at Missouri State and knows the SEC. Probably a good fit

Auburn just fired Johnnie Harris
I find it curious that the SEC network reported that Gaston chose to go to Auburn because Harris was big on coaching post players. Announcer said Gaston's decision was because she wanted to play in the WNBA. Does this mean that Vic isn't big on coaching them? I have a feeling that she was tired of the lack of playing time because of Amo. Seems like she was counting on more minutes and point totals to improve her WNBA chances. On the other hand, I don't see many folks from so-so teams getting those.

All the players who transferred out of our program after last season... Gaston (Auburn), Muhammad (Oregon), Faye (Pitt), and Herron (Mizzou) saw their teams finish in the bottom half of their respective conferences and make first round exits from the tournaments on Wednesday.

Yep, I know all these players got more minutes where they went, but jeez, I kinda like the idea of playing on a high caliber team...not just playing for minutes. I Know they'll all get their quality educations, but to transfer to a lowly team to achieve that is beyond me. That would have been like my playing for Goose Creek during high school!

Welp.

Wisconsin HC Marisa Mosely has resigned
As a transplanted longhorn here in Madison, I’ve gone to badger women’s games the last several years. It still surprises me they can’t get anything going here. I think they had some decent runs in the early 2000’s but it’s been Big Ten cellar since then. Mosley seemed like she had them gradually improving her first three years, but they kind of plateaued/fell back this year. She did have some trouble interacting with some players it seems, but I thought she coached pretty well.

The women’s volleyball and hockey teams sell out the whole season (albeit smaller arenas than the cavernous Kohl center, which feels like Erwin). And the men sellout most games. So there ought to be fan support if the can ever get a winning team. Maybe they’ll get lucky with the next coach. I’m afraid our best player, Serah Williams will transfer though.

I've seen Elena Lovato and Karen Aston's names being mentioned as possible candidates for the job at Arkansas. Forgot that Aston is from that state.
Interesting... KA has done a good job at UTSA but I wonder if she may want to remain as a State of Texas employee where she already has a number of years towards retirement after stints at UT, UNT, and UTSA. I'm wondering if Lovato is even interested in a HC position? It's rough out there for a HC these days.

Especially tough in the SEC.

Lavato has been a head coach and won two national championships at the D1 level at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Tx. She’s a good recruiter and has been with Vic since the Mississippi State days. Seems I’ve read somewhere that she has no desire to be a head coach again but I guess if the “right” opportunity came along…?

After Elena joined Vic at Miss. State, she was hired to be the head coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith. Familiarity with the state might be why she is being mentioned now.

My memory is foggy but I too seem to recall that she wasn't interested in being a HC (maybe wishful thinking).

I may be overstating her significance but in my opinion, Lovato is one of the most valued assistant coaches in all of the Texas sport teams. Lovato's connections and contributions to recruiting are one of the keys to our success. Additionally, I believe Lovato is assigned the scouting duties when we play our toughest opponents. If you have met Elena, you know that she is approachable, down to earth, and her experience/knowledge of basketball is exceptional.

Hopefully, this speculation results in Lovato receiving a bump in salary and she remains at Texas,

I wouldn't think the University of Arkansas would be a very attractive program to try to revive.. not with the current beasts lurking in the SEC. Also, I don't think it's surrounding culture would be a fit for just anyone

Edit: same to be said for Mizzou and probably Auburn as well. Although Auburn may be more attractive than the other two combined.

NIL support for women's basketball programs is also a consideration. Good or bad, NIL is near the top of the list for getting difference makers via high school recruiting or the portal. I don't know if Arky, Missouri and Auburn have much NIL support for their women's basketball programs.
