Coaches question the future of the ‘Q package’

Just out of curiousity...how many of you that are now saying for Chiles to move positions were the ones screaming for him to get some snaps in pre season??

Like the Henry "Shelton" experiment, it is time to do the right thing and retire the Q package... before it costs us a turnover or an injury we don't need.

How much has he played with the 1st team offense? He is playing like the 2nd team QB behind a Heisman finalist. I'm giving him a break. I'm thinking that his play (besides trying to do too much) is being limited by play calling due to: 1) his inexperience and 2) Mack's desire not to be over aggressive in blowouts...Seems like #1 can be overcome (See McCoy last year) and #2 would be fixed if we gave Colt the hook a little earlier in the 3rd qtr.

We put way too much stock in recruiting rankings around here. What else indicates Chiles is the stud some of you want to believe he is? It's not bagging on him to judge his value to the team by the way he has performed on the college football field.

I'm among those wondering what has happened to Harris because I like what I saw of him in the spring games. I think he was a better passer and also a dangerous runner. If the coaches are favoring Chiles, I hope it's for what they see in practice and not based on their projections of him as a recruit.

Oddly, those saying Chiles won't start because of Gilbert are doing the same thing. Gilbert looks great, but he's not in college yet. Bomar and and Periloux looked great, too. You just can't tell for sure.

With Chiles looking a little dubious, I'd feel better if we were developing yet another alternative. One thing Mack and Davis have never done is use the time in non conference to develop the backup QB. They say they'll do it every year, and they don't. I get the feeling Davis is just never quite sure if his number one has had enough reps.

For the record, I'd be delighted if Chiles made a fool of me and this post. It'd be the tastiest crow I ever ate if Chiles stepped up and started looking ready to take over if Colt can't play.

I don’t think we’ve seen the best of the “Q” as that would have Chiles passing to McCoy off play action.
Umm can he make that pass???

Not dogging on Chiles here. I think all of us want to see him succeed and do well. If it means he continues to play QB and improve, then great. If it means our coaches work him in somewhere else, then that's fine, too. I don't think any of us want to see him as just a career backup behind Colt. If we can find another way to maximize his talent out on the field, why not explore it?

However, he has to stay at QB right now. We don't really have any other QB's with actual game experience at this point. I really do wish we would find a way to get Harris a few reps on the field from time to time -- not because Chiles can't cut it at QB (we don't know that yet, unfair to make that call right now) -- but because we need extra insurance against injury. We may also want to free up Chiles to play another position if everyone involved thinks it would be for the best.

I could very well be wrong about this but I think this whole Q package comment by Mack is a smoke screen.

We never intended to use it much until we actually needed to and so far we have not needed it at all. That could change against CU but I doubt it.

We have shown very little of it so far but I have a feeling we will see some new wrinkles with it in Dallas next week.

So far this year, I have been pleasantly surprised by his passing game.
I think his running prowess (ironically) and decision making need improvement, but could very well be just be a case of trying to press things when they're not there, as a result of limited rep's and being impatient. I think these things could very well turn around with more rep's.

The thing that bothers me is the attitude. He was having a full-on temper tantrum and showing his frustration at the coaches and his teammates on Saturday. Not good.

The other thing that bothers me about the Q package is the thought of a DB zeroing in on McCoy while he's catching a screen pass.
Do we really need to risk our best player using him as a WR? Its risky enough that he's getting all of these carries.

Scrap the damn thing.

I seriously doubt that many (if any at all) plays in that package are designed to throw Colt the ball. That is not it's intended purpose by any means.

This just in: Colt is a better runner than Chiles.

Q package just gives the D a chance.

Chiles is not as advertised. Coaches, let's move on. What are we worried about? He'll transfer to SFA and back up Bomar?

With our next 5 games, we have more important things to worry about than keeping a backup "quarterback" happy. And I understand we have to be prepared if god forbid Colt gets nicked- but from what I've seen, Chiles, nor the Q package is the answer.

I'd like to see Colt line up as a slot WR in the Q package. He's faster than a lot of linebackers.

It's hard to judge the Q package when we run such predictable plays from it - just like last year when Chiles came in and everyone knew exactly what was going to happen.

I'm disappointed by all the attacks on Chiles and everyone giving up on him. He is only 4 games into his second year, without the luxury of having redshirted, and has played QB on an extremely limited basis (not to mention that he has been cross-training at WR since the spring/fall practices, further taking time away from his QB training).

Coming into the year, everyone was ready to give up on him because he couldn't throw the ball. Now, he has missed only 1 pass (although a couple of others weren't great), and everyone is giving up on him because of his decision making.

Sure he has made some stupid (and costly) mistakes. But give him some time to develop. Its not like Vince had great decision making his first year. Chiles is clearly pressing, trying to make more than is there in his limited opportunities. Put him back as the back-up QB, let him train exclusively at QB, and learn the position. Get him as much experience as possible in meaningful situations (or at least let him run the whole offense when he is in there).

And while his running numbers may not be great, I think that has as much to do with the predictable play calling while he is in there and other teams stacking the line (because they still aren't concerned he is going to beat them with the pass like they are with Colt). We have all seen glimpses of his athletic ability running the ball, and while it is possible that he has put on too much weight or something, I doubt he has just completely lost that.

Maybe he won't ever become an elite QB, but I think he has shown enough signs to believe that the game will eventuallyl slow down for him and he will get it. And when that happens, he will be dangerous.

But yeah, I have no problem shelving the Q package, or at least limiting it to a couple of trick plays.
