Coach PK & the Texas D—#1 Defense in the SEC

Chop
You can also take a bow since you are the original PK champion.
You’re too kind. But anyone could see it. He was consistently able to hold down very sophisticated passing attacks with good QBs to the low 20s or below in the old PAC 12. And developing lots of 3 star type recruits into all conference players.

And unlike most of the DCs we’ve had here at UT over the past 4 or so decades, PK really understands the LB position.

Current NCAA team national ranks:

Passing yards per game allowed - #1
Team pass efficiency D - #1
Total D - #2
Fewest 1st downs allowed - #3
Scoring D - #4
Interceptions - #6
Forced turnovers - #7
3rd down conversion D - #13
Red zone D scoring percentage - #16
Rushing yards per game allowed - #28
TFL - #31
Sacks - #41
Defensive TDs scored - #41 (just 1)
4th down conversion D - #45

What this says to me is that we play a ton of zone and we're sure-tackling. Not being ranked highly in TFL or sacks is a function of our scheme and not necessarily a bad thing, although I'd love to see those too.

The #28 in rush yards (despite the obvious that we're the #2 total D in the nation) shows that it's ok to give up some of those if you're preventing them from scoring.

The thing I'm most proud of/happy about is the improvement in tackling. Tackling has improved exponentially under PK. No longer do we try to blow ball carriers up without wrapping up.

He's does seem to have eliminated the "I wanna be on Sports Center Blowup Highlights" rather than stopping the play.
It goes in phases. With player safety at the forefront right now, the best teams are generally avoiding the headhunter types.

We haven't had many of them, but there are guys who were below-average defenders but good for a helmet-remover or decleater... BJ Foster at the top of mind due to recency. Jason Hall is another.

As my son warned me, Bobby with no talent is wat better than K with a ton of talent, He will eventually pick that defense to shreds. Sark has to fire up the offense or we'll be glad they built the bypass around Springdale.

Nobody picked our defense to shreds. We just held Arkansas to their lowest point total of the year—at Arkansas.

Best Defense in the SEC, which is widely touted (by SouthEasterners) as the toughest defensive conference in college football.

The D kept us on top in an anemic game by our O.

Chop,

Arkansas should never have been in this game. I come from an era when the Hogs were always Top Ten. If they execute, we're toast because we seem to be flat.

No way any sane human being that has seen more than one game would ever think K is in the same football stratosphere as Bobby.

I'm grateful for the win with or without "style points", but it was far from our better (much less finest) defensive schemes or efforts. Hope Bobby gets a decent HC offer that ain't on our schedule.

Bobby did sh1t today. Suck it hogs.

We held them to 10 points.

PK ftw

I do think them having large men in the backfield helped them. Large RBs and QB. Those were the big men running today.

That’s right. We played better D against the Hog O than anyone else has this season (tie with LSU).

Holding the Higs to a measly 10 points on their own field is an accomplishment.

Now if you want to talk about why we didn’t score 30+ on O, then you could have a good conversation.

I’m interested in seeing the updated SEC Defensive rankings this late in the year. I think we might even be #1.

It's not on topic for the thread, but Ewers held the ball too long. Yeah he missed a couple of easy throws but he was accurate overall. There were a couple of drops too that cost us drives and points. But his negative yards on sacks sicked energy out of the offense imo.

And check this out: Arkansas has the #2 Offense in the SEC by yards per game. Second only to Ole Miss.

We shut those punks down and showed them who is boss.
