Coach PK & the Texas D—#1 Defense in the Nation (CBS now says this is our Best Defense in Program History)

Chop,

I respect you, but come on, quoting the Daily Texan? Can those people find Memorial Stadium?

Statistics? Comical! It was Arkansas & Kentucky, not Oregon & Ohio State. With the exception of Georgia, this year's schedule would make Westlake jealous.

The kids have played well, taken a few plays off here and there, but they have played well. They can't help who is on the schedule, and like I said, when K didn't get his call in Saturday, the leaders lined their teammates up, moved them into position, and made the plays. The "good coaching" shows up in their ability to do that, not on a stat sheet.
You misspelled Deadly Toxin.

Our D is awesome this year. One of the best most well rounded we’ve had in the 50+ years I’ve been watching. I don’t try to directly compare the defense of today against the Ds of yesteryear when offenses were in large part three yards and a cloud of dust. It’s a completely different game and offenses we face are sooo much more complex.

1. We tackle well, including in the open field.
2. We very rarely blow coverages.

Those 2 alone put us in the top 10% of defenses.
...............................................................................
3. We usually can get pressure on the QB, even without blitzing.

Those 3 alone put us in the top 5% of defenses.
And we have elite secondary ball skills leading to an abnormally high number of interceptions and pass breakups. Our schemes are fluid and not too predictable. There is good team chemistry and leadership on the field. Add it all together, and that puts us into the top 1-2% of defenses.

And the know-it-alls said our defense would be worse this year because of the loss of our very stout 2-techniques from last year.

We don't rebuild.
We reload.

I have to admit, i thought our defense was going to be weaker this year.
So happy to say, BOY I WAS WRONG!

I'll say this...

The long anticipated emergence of Trey Moore as an effective edge rusher has really put the icing on our defensive cake.

And yes, PK has been baking this cake for four years.

He's not wrong about the late play calling.

It's just a small factor in the big picture
I agree he's not wrong.

However, let's ask ourselves why late calls haven't hurt us this year. I'd say a very large factor is that we have guys who have played in the same scheme for so long that they can function as defensive playcallers. We don't NEED to be told by the sideline what to do and how to line up.

Isn't that kind of the holy grail for defensive coaches? To teach your scheme to the players so consistently and so well that they no longer need you every single play?

I think over his time here, Simmons may end up the best of the bunch. Another Kiki DeAyala by the time he's an upperclassman.

As always, there is no substitute for talent. They have as you state above and speed at all positions. Reminds me of some of the great Texas "D"s of prior years. More to come with new blood. Love great defensive football.

I've been watching since 1964 and started paying closer attention since 1968, and this may be the best defense I've seen at Texas, from coaching to performance on the field to depth. Hope it continues to the end of the season!

Coach PK and the Texas defense pitched a blanking shutout in the SEC, rivalry Top 25 game against aggie!
Exactly!

The ONLY points aTm got last night were surrendered by our offense.

The squirmy little grumpkins who whined that our D couldn't possibly stand up to a run-pass combo QB now squirm under slimy rocks at the bottom of Waller Creek.

GREAT JOB COACH PK AND THE TEXAS DEFENSE!!!

This is an awesome Defense.

And it's even more awesome considering we're living in a high-scoring offensive era.

Texas has significant depth on the defense. The line can stay fresh as they rotate along the front frequently. The linebackers not as much, but you have depth there as well with Hill, Leafau (sp?), Gbenda, Smith, and Moore has been playing off the line as a linebacker more frequently in the last few games. Coach PK also can give a lot of different situational looks with a heavy line or a pass rushing line depending on down and distance, same with safeties who tackle like lb's dropping down to the lb area on passing downs. This unit tackles better than we have seen in a long time (probably 2008-2009) and the defensive backs collectively have the best hands that I can recall (oh the irony of Gideon being the coach:headbang: )

The sure tackling has been a blessing for sure. Especially compared to the Herman years when we continually saw failure after failure to wrap and the idiotic flexing when they did make a tackle.
