Coach DeMoss leaving??

I know some of you mentioned Travis Mayes, but I'd have to believe if he interviewed but was bypassed the first time around, it's unlikely he gets interviewed now . . .

seems that we are focusing on former Texas players or someone with UT ties. Wonder if Coach G has anyone from Duke in the coaching ranks that she may consider? Or maybe a Texas high school coach wanting to make the jump into college coaching?

Until there is a woman coaching a men's team, I don't think ANY women's teams should be coached by men.....JMO...
(and, yes, I know I'm spittin' in the wind on that idea)

Mickie may not have had "Texas Connections", but she is an excellent coach, and GG will be hard-pressed to find anyone as good. As much as I love`Anissa, no way she is ready for this prime-time...and Mays....he is still tied to Jody history...no way he is hired...but I do agree a native coach might help w/ recruiting!!

The common thread among all these posts on a new coach keeps referring to recruiting more Texas gals for the team......what are your thoughts on the out of state players? How many native players do you feel should be on the team or does it matter if they are a WINNING TEAM? Just saying

you do realize, LH44, that we are just BSing here since we have no say in who is hired? As long as the team wins, I doubt if anyone cares where the players come from, although there is some pride in knowing that there are Texas HS players on the team. Right now, Texas HS are brimming with outstanding players as good as any on the national scene. Those are the ones we as fans want UT to have first dibs on. We kinda expect Coach G to lock down the top Texas players, kinda like Coach Brown has in FB. And that means establishing a strong positive relationship with the HS coaches. Hence, the wondering if a coach with Texas HS ties already in place wouldn't be the best choice.

The Statesman earlier in the week stated something to the effect that Coach G would "look outside the Texas program" to fill the vacancy. Not positive what that meant, but to me it simply meant no one currently in the program would be promoted to that position (but, that's sort of obvious as we're one coach short) . . .

What I figure is that leaves Williams, currently a Special Assistant, in that position, instead of being promoted to Assistant Coach/Head Recruiter. This position is likely a prime one and there should be a handful of top candidates Coach G can choose from.

The new coach would likely have to work with the posts as that was DeMoss' duty. I would also agree that they should have Texas/recruiting ties.

I know a coach who
a) knows how to play the post position.
b) has ties to the AAU teams in the state and can recruit
c) Is a Texas native
d) Is a former Texas basketball player who understands the tradition here.

That person is.... Clarissa Davis!

yes, yes I know- she and Coach G do not get along. But I'd love to see them put aside their differences and work together for the sake of the Texas basketball program. Sometimes two sides may not like each other, but they need each other. Gail needs her on board. She needs those Texas ties.

Clarissa Davis certainly fits the bill in terms of what many feel the Horns are, or should be looking for in a new assistant coach. And it could only be seen as a good thing to have the program's most famous and decorated alum associated with the team in an official capacity. That said none of us have any idea as to who may, or may not be interested in the opening, Clarissa included. I don't accept that CD and GG don't get along, however, or that they don't like one another. A few have speculated in the past about circumstances surrounding Clarissa's departure from the program when GG took over, but I don't necessarily put much into those comments....and those making the insinuations said nothing when their posts were challenged. Davis-Wrightsil and Coach G are both professionals and I will always believe both care deeply for the program and want the best for its future. I fully trust the current staff to select the best candidate possible for the job.

The main reason I don't think Clarissa is the right choice is b/c of her lack of coaching experience at the collegeiate level. IIRC, she has one year experience as an assistant coach at Texas, and one year at Rutgers. So, two years doesn't cut it in my book. I also don't recall her bringing in a big name recruit; but again, limited years to prove herself as a recruiter, so that's tough to gauge.

I don't know that a candidate needs a certain number of years as a coach under his or her belt to be considered qualified. There are probably any number of good, young coaches out there who might be possibilities, and who don't have much more experience than Clarissa...but they might be seen as good choices for other reasons, as is the case with Davis-Wrightsil. We have a staff of very good and experienced coaches and it seems the new person will be primarily responsible for working with the posts....on that front I can't imagine anyone better Clarissa. As far as recuriting goes, that is a judgement Coach G will have to make, but I don't think we can assume there is a long list of potential candidates who have better in-state contacts or relationships than Davis-Wrightsil....there may be a few but I have no idea. I do know that she has worked with some very good recruits as a result of her AAU program, including Tennessee signee Simmons and unsigned Forthan from the 2011 class. As I said in a previous post I have no idea if Clarissa would even be interested, or vice-versa on the Horns' end, but I do think she ticks most of the boxes and it would certainly be nice to have her associated with the program again. That's just my opinion.

I agree Clarissa would be a good hire, but it ain't gonna happen, folks.

Just hope it's someone who can coach posts like DeMoss, recuit like Aston, and stand up to Gail when she needs to....

I'm excited to find out who the new coach is going to be and if the recruiting responsibilities will be spread out or if the new coach will be the top recruiter.

Spring signing ends May 19, iirc. But scouting for the 2011 will intensify this summer. With the need for at least one more post besides Nneka, knowing who is going to coach that position may be pivotal in getting some of the other top post players in 2011.

Given the preferences, we can guess that the person will have at least five years coaching, is likely to have pro experience (coaching and/or playing) and be from a successful program. My guess (fairly safe one) is that it will be someone from one of the schools that consistently is making the Sweet Sixteen or better in the, say, past five to ten years.

I would not touch Clarissa Davis- Wrightsil with a 20 foot barge pole. While she will always be Longhorn royalty because of her accomplishments on the hardwood, she has shown herself to be a terrible Collegiate assistant. She was on staff for the second losing season in Longhorn history and then totally bombed at Rutgers as well! Never mind the harm she tried in recruiting after she was quite rightly dismissed from the program! If TX wants Longhorn greats, pick someone who played while current recruits were alive. 1986 is avery long time ago. The program needs new blood, not disloyal has-beens. What are Edwina Brown, Stacy Stephens, Jamie Carey doing these days? Annisa Hastings was one of the best defensive pots I have seen in a Longhorn jersey and is having huge success as a high school coach in San Antonio . . . Or better yet throw some money at the assistant in charge of post development at Baylor or A&M! Start with your ABC's. Anyone But Clarissa. She had her chance and blew it Big Time! Great player, bad coach.

Overseas....#4 is #1.....without a Texas Connection, our recruiting will continue to be behind A&M, Baylor and even OU....JMHO....

PS....Like the idea of Hastings....and even Stephens, but experience may be a factor, and do you think a "Jody" connection would taint the pie?

Just a thought...

If KMR can lure Barmore out of retirement, what if Coach G lured Conradt out of retirement to be an assistant coach?

I agree that Clarissa is not the answer.

I heard a rumor that someone who fits lots of posters criteria – male, experienced, with Texas ties – turned the job down. I’d rather not be more specific than that since it came to me about 4th-hand. I have no confirmation, and if true I don’t even know if that was a “final answer”. But, you don’t have to use much imagination to figure out what the story was.

Personally I don’t think I am qualified to have an opinion about who would be best. I think there are a lot of great basketball coaches. There are a lot of great recruiters. But, above everything else it needs to be someone who will fit in well with, and compliment, the existing staff. A lot of that goes to personality and individual areas of strength. I just don’t know enough to even express opinions.

I do not think male/female should matter. I’m sure there are players who would like to have a male coach. But, I’m sure there are also players who would prefer to not have a male coach. There are obvious advantages to having a coach with strong Texas ties. But, there are also advantages to having a coach experienced with national recruiting. Sometimes a coach with a recognizable name and reputation as a great player will attract recruiting interest. But, it is also good to have someone who has strong coaching and teaching skills to maximize the talent on campus.

This program has, by Texas standards, struggled for a number of years. But, I do not believe that it is to a point where there would be a problem finding quality coaches who would like to work here. My preference would be to find the person who best compliments the existing staff and after that go with the Mack Brown rule. Find someone who really wants THIS job.

Yeah, forgot about Fred. He fits the profile. But he is in his third year at Washington, an assistant to former Duke assistant Tia Jackson. Not sure if Coach G would raid her former assistant's staff.

I thought Applin left to Texas for Wake Forest as he wanted to be close to his home state of North Carolina? I don't even remember him going to Washington after that . . .
