Coach Aston's staff

I am wondering what everyone has heard or thinks about her bringing in new assistants and or retaining from the previous staff.

It's hard to say but there was a blurb in the online Denton paper sports blog that word from Austin (whatever, or whoever that means) is that she will be bringing two assistants with her from UNT. Of course that was just a comment in a blog, quoting an unnamed source, so who knows if it's accurate. The same blog also said it looked like the male assistant was staying put so that would mean Aston was bringing the two female assistants with her, if the blurb is correct. If that's the case I guess that would mean two current assistants could stay; that would make sense as no one thought completely cleaning house was a good idea during the last transition. And if two do stay my guess would be Edwina and Ron since some seem to think having at least one male assistant and one with Texas ties is a good thing. Not saying I agree, or don't agree, just that we've seen those type of comments here in the past. I guess we'll find out sooner rather than later though, I don't think it should take too long to sort all of that out.

Did you read their bios on the UNT website? I might have to agree with PDX that it was nothing to write about. That blog also speculated Ortega could be HC given her contributions and tenure with UNT.

I would actually be surprised if she brought anyone other than Angella Ortega from UNT because it was only the other assistants first year under Aston, but again I think Ortega would also be considered for the HC job as well. But I have also heard that Travis Mays has been telling people that his return to Austin, Where his wife and children still reside is imminent. I also see her keeping wink around too. So that only leaves room for one spot IMO

I was thinking that the surprise talked about right be fore her press conference was that Travis would be returning. I still think that's a distinct possibility.

Well, Travis wasn't the surprise being referred to, but he could still come back. I wouldn't mind having him on staff as long as we kept Edwina also.

Having both Travis and Edwina on the staff would be great. Can't have more of a Texas connection than that and both should be well known among high school coaches.

I would LOVE it if Travis is coming back! Never should of let him go in the first place. I wouldn't mind if we kept Ron either. Seems like a lot of the players like him & that he is responsible for bringing several of them into the fold. Do y'all think we might hear an announcement about staff this coming week? I would think it would be a priority because hasn't the recruiting period started? I'm not sure-utfannforlife?

I am hoping there are several young coach Aston's on the new staff. Guys/gals that are ultra aggressive on the recruiting trail.

One of the mods on Orangebloods.com just stated that he heard through the grapevine that Travis Mays will be hired as an assitant coach.

I like Travis, but he was an assistant coach here from 2004-07; those last 2 years, Texas failed to make the NCAA tourney.

That leaves two spots remaining, 1 more Assistant, and whatever GV's position was. I believe it was "director of player develeopment"? I cant recall off the top of my head.

Interesting that Ortega was brought down to Austin to be DIrector of Operations. Would have though she'd be an Assistant. Sounds like this move gives Coach A an opportunity to consider hiring one of the former assistants under Goestenkors. It could be between Edwina and Coach Hughey, or maybe some else.

I'm beyond thrilled that Travis is back

He's an excellent recruiter & that is what we need right now. I wouldn't of ever thought of Amie Smith Bradley but I think that she's a great hire too. Definitely someone who can maybe fire up the fan base. Don't know anything about the other 2 but from what I've read I also was very surprised that Angela Ortega was hired as director of basketball operations. I can't wait to see who else she hires. I'm liking Aston as our hire more & more everyday.

looks like we need a post coach. Surprised at some of the people and the slots they filled but happy to see both Travis and Amie back in burnt orange. Don't know squat about Ortega & Mitchell but since they have been with Karen at least a couple of years, they are people she likes and wants to work with. Definitely a burnt orange tint to this staff.

Mitchell will connect with the players right away on team. And with the recruits. She played at NT and Duncanville.
Travis is great with the players and the recruits!
Hope they keep Ron

just a thought, if Karen wants to have another Texas exe for that third slot and wants a post coach, Stacy Stephens is currently an assisant coaching at Texas College.

I have mixed feelings on the hires.

This seems to be a 180 degree change in approach to Coach G's hires.

Very little head coaching experience regarding hires; very little NCAA tourney and Final Four experience; very little national recruiting connections, IMO.

My guess is that if any staff members were going to be retained, they would have already been announced. Plus, I don't see two male assistant coaches on staff.

I like that Coach is charting her own path with the staff and think they will do great. Young and hungry that is what I wanted and it looks great to me....Coach G's problem was definitely recruiting....IMO it will be Coach A's strength.

Maybe, but Aston had 3-Way Hall-of-Famer Conradt to dangle in front of them...

Hope you are right, I want to see us get back on top....
