Coach A

I can't believe a so called Division 1 coach is still mix matching a starting five in a high profile program. This is why the program lost against a TCU program that has never beat us. Every top D1 program has stability. This coach is a mid major program coach and is hurting our program. By now she should know who to count on. The kids are basically out there playing pick up ball with no stability. No fault of our kids. This is a coaching problem. You don't tell top scorers to watch your shoot selection or else. Makes them wonder do I shoot or get taken out and yes some players are getting hurt by this coach. Keep your heads up girls! Hook'em

Listen to your coach girls! You have a winner and things will work out by playing hard!!

I will always support the 'Horns and never, ever wish anything but victories. I've been skeptical of this hire from the beginning, mainly because Texas could have afforded to hire the best coach in the country and didn't. Aston was a gamble and so far, it hasn't paid off. IMO, I've there have been glimpses of improvement certainly but yesterday totally disheartening. Worse than this historic loss (yes, it's historic when you lose to an opponent for the first time ever -- how often does that happen?) were Aston's comments after the game, blaming the players. So disappointing. How about, "TCU was out coached and better prepared." That's the reality.
I still hope this team turns a corner, makes a decent run in conference play and squeaks in the tournament. However, if they can't win road games, that's not gonna happen.

Coach A. That's a good one. She has certainly been assembling an A grade record since she has been here: Longest losing streak, longest conference losing streak, fewest amount of wins in a season in program history, and then yesterday's first ever loss to TCU in 34 games. There are probably more records that she has managed to break in the 50 games she has coached here, but it is too depressing to assemble them. She is indeed making Texas history. Coach A, I wish. So far, Coach F would be a much more accurate assessment.

I am as stunned as anyone else with the latest collapses, and i think coach aston shares in the blame. i think, though, that it's highly illogical that none of the culpability falls on the players on the court. they are turnover prone (24 or 25 in the last game and 19 on average per game), they make bad decisions (henderson, rodrigo et al.), they had missed shots at the rim. it's not all on the coach -- both the coach and the players need to own these latest debacles.

anyone rationale would reject these assinine claims . notice how these "criticisms" were absent during the Renaissance years. Hypocrisy to the core!!!!

Recruiting is actually a positive. Hopefully that remains true once they arrive. But we saved a ton of money hiring Aston so who cares if we have actually gone from bad to worse!

This sentiment out there among the fanbase that we have a lot of money so we should just throw it at our problems is ludicrous. The same thought process would have Saban as our football coach. I would expect the people following UT women's basketball would have way more appreciation of the fact that a big splash, high dollar hire does absolutely nothing to guarantee success. You need to find the right fit for your university and that does not always equal the one that commands the highest salary. Plonsky thought Aston was the right fit and she deserves the time to elevate the program and at a minimum that time table is 4 years.

And while I'm on the soapbox, the ranting over the fact we have never lost to TCU and shouldn't lose to TCU is a stupid idea too. Get over it. It's an idea rooted in the old SWC days when Texas dominated every team in the conference. We do NOT live in those days anymore nor should we want to live there. We now live in a highly competitive women's basketball conference. The defection of A&M and to a lesser degree Missouri, Colorado and Nebraska requires we replace them with high caliber teams. A high caliber team is not one that has never beaten some of the programs in its conference. TCU needed to get that monkey off its back. Am I glad it happened the way it did Sunday?...hell no.. but nonetheless the Big 12 needs a competitive TCU not a SWC TCU that is a conference doormat.

I don't care if we pay a coach minimum wage. We're Texas. We should hire the best coach in the country. I don't really care what we pay her/him. Aston may in time work out but right now, no one with any credibility will claim we hired the best possible coach in the country.

And -- we shouldn't lose to crappy teams. Period. TCU is a crappy team. The fact that they've been crappy since the beginning of women's collegiate basketball and had never beaten Texas makes it even worse. So, what's really stupid is pretending losing to TCU doesn't matter or that people should get over it. That's a loser's mentality.

I think Texas should expect championships, regardless of the sport. It sure seems to work for volleyball. In the past, it's worked for football, baseball and even women's basketball. We've been on a four-year plan for women's basketball now for more than a decade.

No I knew Texas made a mistake, and the results are indisputable. Most of you were fooled into thinking the Messiah was hired for Texas.

and I will be proven right AGAIN when Coach A builds this program into a power.

Spin a loss however you want, TCU is a crappy team. And Texas should never lose to them. Period.

It shouldn't take 4 years build a team that can beat crappy teams, have a winning record in conference play (and obviously, for the season), go to the NCAA tournament and win a round -- or three. Glad you're willing to wait. Most fans just aren't (of course, we have no choice because as of today, they haven't asked me to help with a coaching search which is odd).

So if we're still having this conversation next year or God forbid the next, perhaps then Texas will decide it's worth it to conduct a legitimate national search and hire the best possible coach available. As in -- the best coach in the country.

I'm sure Connecticut hates dominating their conference almost as much as Stanford hates dominating the PAC 12. If you're not wanting to win every damn game, what's the point? Crappy is relative. Compared to UNT the TCU program ain't so crappy. How far down the list do we need to be before losing to a team bothers you? Compared to UT, the program at TCU is crappy. That's why we always beat them.., until now. I'd argue more on the side that we've fallen before I'd declare TCU relevant. Suddenly we find ourselves arguing over varying degrees of crappy. Aston didn't beat a team from TCU. That's crappy. When the hell did Texas become a training ground for head coaches? And for the record, we have by far the most profitable college athletic program in the country. Even our billionaire donors joke that what money ain't at the Vatican is buried under the 40 acres. Just because GG didn't work out like we had hoped doesn't mean we were suddenly limited to the Dollar Store. Aston got hired because she was a friend of the AD and the former coach. There was nothing remarkable in her resume. Nepotism is a whole lot more to be angry about than paying top dollar for a coach.

All that said, I'm bringing 28 to the WV game. Here's hoping for a win.

Aston is here. I strongly agree that she should never have been hired, and what has she done since she has been here to warrant four years?

Let me make a simple analogy: I get hired into my dream job because I have friends in power when there is nothing on my resume to warrant the position. Then in my first year, I deliver the worst results in the 30 plus year history of the job. I think last year's results should have been enough to get her fired.

Instability is bad for a program, but in the long term having a head coach who is essentially brain dead on offense is worse. My fear is that Aston's defense will be good enough to claw the program back into the mediocrity of the last decade, but until she learns how to coach a half court offense and there are no signs after 50 or so games that that process has even begun, the ceiling for her teams will be very FAR from elite.

My fear that we are in for a long run of bubble teams with the occasional disaster like last year and the odd second round run in the NCAA's, which given Plonsky's loyalty and stubbornness might be enough to keep Aston around.

The OP is correct. Aston is a mid major coach, a good but not great mid major coach. The problem is that she is now no longer coaching in a mid major league.

It could be worse. We could be Texas Tech

P.S. And Asston REALLY has not earned the right to throw her players under the bus as she tends to do after a loss. She does not have the success of Geno or Kim. She was hired through connections not on merit and has the worst win/loss record of any coach in Texas WCBB history. Given her poor record, it would be nice to see her show a little humility and take some responsibility.

Coach A has a winning record against the aggies, unlike the loser from the last regime.

No matter how hard you try to knock down Coach A, you're failing.

I don't have an issue with giving her the token 4-5 years. I made the same argument for Gail. What I have an issue with is the hire in the first place. And I'll repeat an earlier statement I made: I sincerely hope I choke on crow when she forces it down my throat. I just also sincerely doubt crow is on the menu anytime soon. Seattle deserves to have an unfounded love of this coach just like I did for my coach of choice. To my knowledge, however, Seattle remains the only one on this board who has actually wished for the team to lose to prove a point. But, if you can't criticize as well as proselytize on this site, then this board would serve no purpose beyond an outlet for university press releases.

For the few who still haven't figured it out, Seattle doesn't really like Aston, or any other Longhorn coach, past or present (Conradt, and obviously, GG included).
