Clowney: I was a Texas fan and wasn't recruited

We seldom land everyone from Texas we want.

I'm advocating that we still work Texas just as hard, but target top guys, especially at positions of need throughout the nation.

If you only make 31 offers you will never get the top OOS guys.

I would still work my 30 in-state offers and than plan to make 30 OOS each year with hopes of getting 3 to 5 to come.

I agree with most of what you said except the number of offers. I would never want to be in the position of telling a kid, like Ole Miss or other SEC Schools, that your scholarship is no longer available. I do agree we should be targeting OOS kids where it benefits are program. With all of that said, we have had some pretty solid recruiting classes over the past 10 years, but I guess they could always be better. The problem with recruiting OOS kids such as Brantley, Westerman and others is that other Texas possible recruits move on, and we are left holding the bag. That seldom happens with in-state recruits.

Johnny...

Mack tells guys every year: whoever commits first gets the LB scholie that is available or the DL position. When you are going after 30 of the top 50 or 60 national guys, you will not succeed as often. You will have to make more "cold calls" to make the sale.

Johnny ....

Adrien Peterson did not pick Texas. When we cannot get the top level guys or when there are not top level guys in-state that should trigger an OOS search.

Dude is awesome if he can make the grades, seems ready for NFL right now? Texas does not recruit dudes who are struggling academically and he did stay at home. South Carolina has some studs on their team.

Yeah, we might have kicked the tires on Clowney, but the fact is, he made it very clear he didn't want to stray far from home in going to college. Even 'Bama's recruiters got tired of his divaness and backed off in the end. It was the least surprising decision of the recruiting class that Clowney chose to play for Spurrier. We might have sent him a letter or two, but beyond that, I see no reason to fault UT recruiters for not joining the Clowney sweepstakes. Besides, with the staff turnover, it was essential to us to hold on to the commitments we already had. I don't think anybody can fault Mack in that respect.

I agree coolhorn. This kid seemed clearly intent on staying back east. Mack had to handle up on
'serious bidness" here with keeping committs, and filling coaching slots.

I think he did fine on both counts.

This guy always indicated that he wanted to stay close to home. He just wanted to say he got an offer from us.

Any time we spent on this joker would've been a complete waste of time.

I don't have a problem with recruiting oos players, but you have to be able to determine serious interest, and act accordingly.

I have an acquaintance who is a die hard Bama fan but is secondarily a Texas fan. I suspect there are lots of folks in the old south like that. They like us and respect us, they like our cool different burnt orange color, they like our strong identity. We should promote the brand and take it up a notch and let these out of state bluechip kids know they can be longhorns with some simple ground rules. No handlers, no exceptions.
