Clowney: I was a Texas fan and wasn't recruited

As has been mentioned in another thread, grades may have been an issue. That and/or the fact that he stated on numerous occasions that he wanted to stay close to home.

Sorry. Didn't see the On The Field thread. But it doesn't sound as if Texas recruited him at all. Isn't hard to project that a guy won't qualify if you don't at least call him or his coaches?

Just thinking out loud

Thanks, but no thanks. With the dog-and-pony show this kid put on, it's probably best that he ended up where he did. Sounds a bit like RP to me. Hope I'm wrong in that regard.

Thayer Evans is a POS and one of the biggest Texas haters known to man. It's so biased it's comical. There is more fact checking in the National Inquirer. This is the same guy that wrote the famous Darrel Scott and McFarland articles. It was WELL known that Clowney wasn't coming to Texas early on indicating even Alabama was too far from home. Give me a break.

If he wanted to go to Texas he would be here, that is a fact.

I'm sure he received enough hats for his collection.

He wanted to be recruited until he found out we had girls romancing one another and it was a little much for him.

Consider the writer before you believe anything.

I don't care how great you are if you want to go to a certain school you should let the school know. It is like hunting for a job. It doesn't always find you and in fact you usually have to look.

At least the clown is aptly named.

If he wanted to come to Texas that badly, he could've recruited himself, a la Blaine Irby.

Didn't Irby bring himself to the staff's attention by sending them highlight tapes at his own expense? Dude was deadset on being a Longhorn--one of the many reasons I'll always throw 'em up for Mr. Irby.

Guess our coaches are too busy and don't have the budget to routinely determine if the top 25 national guys may have interest in us.

There was no way in hell this kid was coming to Texas and recruiting him would have been a waste of staff time and money. Texas is better off with a staff that analyzes the homegrown talent a bit better and longer so the Horns don't have as many busts as we've observed the past few years.

Don't question the need to evaluate local talent. Nor the higher likelyhood that a Texas guy will be more likely to stay in Texas. But, why does USC get a few great players every year from afar and with us it's seldom?

We are a national program. We should get two to four top guys every year from OOS. Last year 5 of the top 10 Texas players chose other than Texas. (Part of the deal was so many RBs, I know) This year, I'm told the top guy in the state is probably a lock for Fla. State I know we are not going to give up on him, but why can they recruit in Texas, but we can't spend the money nor time to recruit in Florida?

You know... Recruiting isn't a two way street all the time but if his interest was high on Texas... Perhaps he or his coach could have sent out some info and initiated some communication about coming to Texas. But Still... our coaches may have looked into the kid. I know academics are a high priority and maybe The coaches found something they don't like. Not every top national recruit is a good fit for every university. The kid has talent... it would have been nice to have on our team.

Agree with Viper. If an OOS player wants to come, we should be respond, but experience has shown that unless there's a compelling interest, it seldom works out. Even when there is a compelling interest, it often falls through in the end. Recent example - the tight end from Washington (forget his name) that flirted with us but ultimately stayed home.

So we plan to tie two fingers behind our back compared to LSU, USC Auburn and Bama. For some reason they are able to do what you say our high paid coaches are too busy to do.

I guess our new OL coach has not gotten the word from Viper yet.

He appears to have offered multiple OOS guys at a need position.

I don't think many coaches like being strung along until a week and a half after signing day. It's pretty hard to have the kind of control you need when 17-year old kids are making sure all the focus is on them. Didn't I read that Alabama said "no thanks" to Clowney last week, though he still had their hat on the table until the "big decision." I think it may be a little easier when you are an SEC coach and a kid shows up on campus, buys his textbooks and you tell him "funny thing about your scholarship ...."

Mike, first of all you are not doing yourself any favors by comparing Texas' recruiting efforts to those of the SEC schools. If you have kept up with SEC recruiting over the years the SEC issues are obvious.

ND recruits countrywide and look where they are. Enough said. No one is saying not to go after an out of state if they have shown interest and a real want to come to Texas.

We are a national program?

You gauge interest by talking to people. You build interest by talking to guys early. (See Durant) It takes work and there will be more misses than our staff has bragged about in past years. (To say we offered 31 and got 24 commits is impressive to some. To me it means we did not try hard with more of the best national athletes)

3 of those four schools have no choice, Texas does. Should we go after Blue Chip OOS kids certainly; when there is a legitemate chance to land them. But most of the time when we land a OOS kid, he has some kind of Texas tie. This staff looks to be working OOS harder than in the past, but if we land everyone in Texas that we want we are going to be ok.
