Ok Handler. I will accept your assessment. So you assume the AD role as of today. You made a run at UM and so far he has said no. Your money boys are not willing to cough up the $25 million to clean house without a big name in hand.. Do you hire a “comer” and tell him he is stuck with the assistants from Tom because you cannot buy out those coaches? Nobody takes that bait. Do you fire Tom and find out the bad press is killing your attraction to other coaches and you settle for another Strong at the midnight hour? That hangover lasted a bunch of years.
What is your plan considering the current state? Who do you want to hire? Give some names. How will you deal with the $25 million? Do you take a chance on an up and comer? Remember this. One off year in recruiting might mean that for a year you get the Iowa State and TCU players. Not a death sentence to any program. Sometimes a good attitude with 3 stars is the best player.
However, bad hires in business and athletics do have long lasting damage and setbacks in performance during the downward spiral and then the slow climb back up. These bad hires followed by bad hires can be the death of a program. Count them. They are out there in the world of college football. Texas is faced with a very critical decision and it is imperative that the best possible one be made. It may take some time, and if it is year off, so be it. But it must a good hire!
i understand your passion and frustration. Trust me, nobody thinks Texas should never take a backseat to any other program more than me. But messy hires and fires will kill you.
