Chiles the Runner

John Chiles is the best running back currently. I'd like to see him at tailback and Harris getting more snaps at QB #2. Chiles looks like he could be the best running back in the nation after the scrimmage. Especially, since it looks like we are going to use the runners the same way we did last year- he has a very fast start and is an absolute potential home run threat. His best position would not be wideout- you want this guy touching the ball 20-30 times per game. Realistically, wouldn't running back give him the best shot at the Pros also?

I like this idea!

It ain't gonna happen guys. He wants to be a quarterback and a quarterback he will be. I just wish he could imprrove on his passing. When he is in teams know what we are going to do.

I may be wrong but it seems like running out of the quarterback position is somewhat different than running out of the running back position. It seems like good running quarterbacks who switch positions move to wide receiver or occasionally to defensive back but not often to running back. And, it's been said, if he wants to play quarterback, he will be playing quarterback.

I like the RB idea .. And John Chiles must greatly improve his passing because QBs have to be a threat to complete passes.. ESPECIALLY in the close games .. if he doesn't improve, and still demands to play QB at Texas, then he's putting himself in front of the team's welfare(and ironically his own welfare) .. I say 2 1/2 years in Austin is plenty enough time for Mack to honor whatever "QB 1st" promise he made to Chiles .. so that's 6 games into 2008.

Was there yesterday. Anyone else who was there and saw him throw a full 5-yards behind his WR on a rollout right agree with you, but he wants to play QB. I had hopes his passing would improve. It hasn't. Far from it.

I would suggest just putting him in at WR/TB during one game, let him see how good he is and how he contributes offensively. A couple of ESPN runs and alot of publicity would in my opinion change his mind about playing another position. Bench or ESPN weekly..Not a hard decision.

D70Horn....maybe I missed something but wasn't JC a freshman in 2007 so 6 games into 2008 would give him 1 1/2 years in system.....maybe I am wrong

Based on how the offensive line played at the spring game, I think Chiles is going to be very important for us at the quarterback position. Having a qb that can run will definitely take pressure of our woeful o-line, so we might as well use the best runner we have.

Remember the last time we had an acceptable drop back style quarterback and a back-up quarterback who was athletic but just didn't have the arm to be our starter? We started by putting him in every three drives (like Chiles now), then after a while he became our starter, and then we won a national championship. All the flack Chiles is getting for his throwing ability is reminding me a lot of the criticism VY used to get before he became God.

I agree Chiles can be key in our offense thjis year but if harris has the same running abilities and is more polished of a passer might as well redshirt chiles instead of putting him in 5 plays a game.

22, I think yer right! .. he went through Spring '07 practice, and played as a true frosh.. I'd seen him play at Summit High School, so I've been privy to his passing skills a bit longer than most .. I think this thread exists because most of us have a strong gut feeling the QB thing isn't gonna workout.. he could benefit the team and himself by applying his considerable skills elsewhere on the field

People are going overboard because of the spring game. Mack said himself, that Chiles has looked much better than what he did in the spring game. I can't believe people are even saying Harris needs to start because he did good against the 3rd team defense.

VY could make the basic throws at this same point in his career. Chiles could not hit a simple swing pass or a pass rolling to his right to Buckner with a clear sightline. Is there a pass on the passing tree that he feels comfortabe throwing? If he wants to be a QB fine, but how about showing some signs of progression.

According to Mack Chiles has shown signs of progression. Mack said he just didn't play as well as he has on Saturday. But maybe Mack was just making it up. McCoy didn't light it up either. Send him to the bench. I guess Harris should start because of what he did in this ONE showing, against the third team defense.

Fozzy has an awesome name, lets make him the quarterback. Also, he plays tuba and has a catfish named Whopper.

Only Harris and Kinne played well in scrimmage which does not mean alot. Harris played well last year in scrimmage. I like Harris and Kinne at qb. Chiles is a great running qb but his passing IMO still needs work.

Chiles reminds me of Vick - but bigger. Am I the first to think this, or just the first (that I've see) to post it?

He even wears Vick's number.

Someone help me out here. We've all seen Chiles play in games last year and his passign was horrible.

My question: what is the problem with his passing/qb skills? Is it his physical motion. Can he just not throw the football or is it a question of reading defenses, knowign the plays, looking defenders off, throwign to the right guy at the right time, etc.

Is his problem that he physically cannot throw the football very well or accurately?

It is physically throwing the ball. It doesn;t have to do with reading defenses. It has to do with the fact that he can't hit anything with a throw. His accuracy is not good and maybe someone else knows how you teach someone to be accurate but I sure as hell don't. It is like arm strength. You can improve it but if you can;t throw than you can;t throw.

It's my opinion that his passing problems come from the defensive pressure he gets in game-like situations. For a young player who probably isn't entirely confident with his throwing arm (he is after all a true sophomore), having to run for his life while trying to find an open receiver at a level of football he doesn't seem quite up to speed with isn't coming easy for him. Add to that the fact that most defenses he's faced expect him to run and therefore put extra effort into getting to him, and you get a really tough situation for him. I think with time and repetition the throwing ability I've seen from him at practices will translate into game-time performance.

If Chiles was not blessed with his running skills would he even be considered for a QB position on any of the 119 D-1 teams? Honest question. Maybe the answer is 100% yes. I'm just asking b/c I have not seen enough of JC.

Watch some of the practice videos and they show JC completing his passes. They're not anything long & spectacular but I've seen him complete quite a few passes. My thoughts are that games are played at a faster pace, with more urgency and with the jitters (for younger players). I'm sure that JC is well aware of the criticism his young arm has been receiving - so it's expected to see him with the jitters.

Mack used to make this comment about VY his 3rd & 4th years, "You can tell the game is starting to slow down for him".

I think once the game starts to slow down for Chiles that we'll start to see his arm improve. Bottom line this kid is a playmaker and a winner. If he didn't show value at QB I believe Mack & Crew would be the first to spot this and make the necessary corrections.

I'm giving JC a pass and look forward to seeing him on the field.
