I work in the telecom industry and have some insight aside from my personal experience. Some items to ponder:
Sprint -- they tout being "nationwide" in all their ads but they are far from it. Its laughable to say you have a nationwide network when you charge roaming fees and have major coverage 'holes'. In fairness, though, these guys got a really late start in the game and are going to be really good when they finish building out. They are not one of the low priced carriers (they admit this) but have the best billing/back office system and technology around. They are handicapped by their ****** technology (CDMA) which is dying in its current form.
AT&T -- good network quality and coverage -- one of the best bets all around. Not spectacular in any area but solid in most realms.
Verizon -- they are the 800 lb gorilla in the industry (the cellular Walmart). It was surprising to learn how immense they are and the muscle they have in the market. Known for being the price leader. Their partnerships and scale will allow them to kick *** for the foreseeable future. Good quality, excellent coverage.
Voicestream -- You guys would be surprised to know that they are VERY well regarded. My boss closes deals with all of the carriers and has been in the business for 20 years. He is in charge of one of the big boys listed above, but champions VS and their voice quality.
If you value voice quality and coverage, in most areas Voicestream and AT&T are the way to go. If you travel stay away from Sprint.
