Card vs. Thompson

He threatened to transfer and his father is an Okie. Someone once said, “potential just means you ain’t done it.” If he stays, he will make a good back up. My guess is he will hit the portal.
Come on, everyone knows Card is the real deal.

With his Dad’s history at OU I think Casey winning big for two years would be a great story. But not a gamble for that reason only.

As to quarterback playing time, I liked the way the old Miami did it with the great ones they had, beginning with Jim Kelly in ‘79. They seemed to have a stud playing with a younger stud in waiting, knowing that his time of at least two years was coming. With the portal and 3 and done in current college football that may not be possible, but with a coach who can develop quarterbacks for the NFL it should be an easier sell. Give me two years for development and back-up playing time and two years as a starter.

But what you cannot do is take all of the studs in one class and you cannot kill the spirit of the second teamer by not playing him because you are afraid of a quarterback controversy. Mack and Tom totally mismanaged the quarterback position and it may have cost Mack a MNC, and it led to his demise (and subsequently an empty shelf for Strong). And Tom’s use of his qb’s almost cost Texas Casey and did cost Texas game production at times when Sam was hurting with no experience for Casey and Buchelle gone to SMU. Then their was his hard headed use of the quarterback as a fullback, leading to injury, knowing that he had no backup with game experience. Dumb!

Texas may have it’s first real developer of this position in more years than I can remember.

I always heard that quote attributed to DKR, but maybe he re-used it. If Card is, in fact, basically Trevor Lawrence, he will go right on past Thompson. If not, Thompson is well positioned to be a point of connection and continuity between the old program and the new. It was believable when he said he had built relationships throughout the team; when Card was on that topic, it sounded hollow. Still, if you are right that Card is just that much better, John Elway or whatever, that would preempt all the rest.

However, even if it became clear that Card was the best player already this summer, I agree with whoever said that there’s no reason to slide him in as the starter in the first two games. That would be just to try to keep Casey. I just don’t know enough about Card to know whether he is already a high-level D1 player.

I've said for 1 1/2 year and will continue to say....people are sleeping on CT...and he knows it. He came back out of the portal because he knew he could win the starting job and prove himself if given the chance. I believe he is going to prove to be a much better QB than 75% of the posters (and fans) apparently realize. You should have bought the stock already....
(And this is saying nothing bad about Card...I remain high on him, as well).
Best case...we get two great years from CT, two from Card, then two+ from Manning. Not sure where Murphy will fit in in this scenario..

Wouldn’t “best case” be that Thompson’s year mirrors Joe Burroughs and he goes #1 in the draft 12 months from now with a Heisman and a championship trophy in the case?

I was surprised that, with two good QB's competing for the #1 spot, we didn't see Thompson start with the 1's the first series then switch to Card with them the second (or first half Thomas with 1's, second half Card).

Then, when Sark called me later and I asked him about it.... Well, let's just say I was somewhat satisfied with his reasoning.

Look at where the ball is already compared to where the receiver is.

This is incredible. The timing magnifico. I've played QB a lot and would never make that throw but Card did in a situation where he is being evaluated for the starting job. Bravo.
How did he know this would be a successful outcome? He didn't. He knew when he threw the the ball it was either gonna be caught or it was going to be an incompletion (not much chance of an interception despite the coverage). The good result is due to practice but its still a thing of beauty. This reminds me of McCoy and Quan Cosby. They had this type of timing thing. Also Burrows had this type of timing with his receivers and look what he got. Is this a preliminary view of greatness to come for Card and his receivers and the longhorns? Lets hope so. I've been waiting for a QB with this type of timing ever since McCoy left. Maybe Card can do even better. It would behoove Thompson to imitate these type of anticipatory passes. Well, for me the point is that he obviously did this completely on purpose and threw it right where he wanted it—-it wasn’t just a dumb luck pass that got past the surprised DB.

I didn't know that about the Bama starting QBs. That would seem to speak to Banks and Sark being on the same page about who's starting, or it could just mean a bunch of diddly squat because it was a Spring game.

And to be fair to Cami Griffin, McCoy was never involved in a QB battle. Snead didn't even show up until the summer session before Fall practices began. Matthew McCoy was Colt's backup during the Spring, and it wasn't even a competition, as Colt had rave reviews from the staff and observers.

In August, people praised Snead's arm for being stronger than Colt's, but that was pretty much the only area in which he was ahead.

I'm with Vol. I want who the coach thinks gives us the best chance.

And when it comes to recruiting, I think most want to see a coach do that with his players.
