Cancun/Playa Hotel Recommendations

Really enjoyed the El Dorado Royale for my honeymoon. The rooms were very nice and the staff was excellent. No complaints at all.

Thanks for the replies - ok I'm with you - at first considered AIs but would also appreciate Cancun hotel recommendations and definitely am not limited to AIs.

I'd also forgo Cancun. It's plastic-fantastic. Playa d Carmen, Isla Mujeres and Tulum are much better experiences.

Gran Coco Bay is a good AI resort that is walking distance to Playa (or a $3 cab ride). Small enough so you don't feel overwhelmed and the food is decent, too.

Just about all of Riveria maya is on sale and tourism is down 20-30% due to economy.
Have stayed at the Royal Hideaway 10+ times and it is the top choice but pricey.
Try bookit.com or playa.info and do some research as there are about 10 new resorts that have opened in the last year and offer huge 30 - 50% discounts.
We stayed a week at Imperial Valentin on Playa Secreto in early Dec 08 and had a great time. About $140 pp/pn AI.
Also we have used vivaaerobus.com twice in 08 and have tickets for this year. Cost was $139 pp rt nonstop out of Austin.
Good luck!

2nd for El Dorado Royal. Really nice place and the staff rocked. it is an AI, so it depends on what you want to do. I didn't want to leave the pool or our room, as it was a lazy vacatoin for me and my wife.

Goofyboy, the El Dorado staff wore me out with all the activities they had going on during the day. The water polo games were vicious, then had beach volleyball, and a ping pong tournament. That was enough to counter all the free booze I was consuming all day.

Wife and I stayed at the Iberostar Grand last summer...it's roughly midway between Cancun and Playa. It's AI but fantastic. Nice rooms, amenities, food and drink. Check out Trip Advisor...many prefer this premium AI over Royal Hideaway.

Isla Mujere is very cool - totally different vibe and it actually feels like you're in Mexico (in a good way)

Thanks for the info - we booked Excellence Playa Mujeres for 3 nights. Any tips on airport shuttles? Would like to hear shuttle company recommendations - there seem to be 20 of them on the web

I had forgotten about this thread.

Went in may and stayed at hotel La Tortuga in downtown playa. I will make that my general vacation strategy from now on. We were on our own for food, but we ate AMAZING meals for very cheap. I have a thread on another site that has lots of pics. I may try and see if i can cut and paste the text with IMG codes here to save time.

Staying downtown is great. chill by the pool or take a 20 dollar cab ride to the beach club in tulum (much nicer that the other beaches I've been to.

I checked with the wife. it may have been around 30 or so. still well worth it to be on a less crowded, whiter, sandier beach with less rocks and stuff.

anyone stayed at Rosewood Mayakoba? i was in Akumal last week for a wedding and drove by and it looked nice. we tried to stay there last year but had some problems and ended up doing something else. Akumal is pretty cool, just not the hotel we stayed at (worst bed i've ever tried to sleep on)

Heading down to Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen for a week on the 29th. Gave up on Akumal.

We just rented a unit at Ixchel Beach Condos on Isla's Playa Norte. It's owned by the guy who owns Beaver Liquors up in Avon, Co.

Crazy cheap for what we're getting. Can't wait.

Thanks, DC, we'll check it out.

Have you stayed at Ixchel? It looks fanatastic, but it's always nice to hear directly from someone who's been there. I've stayed on Playa Norte before, so I know that's great. Just wondering if the condo is as nice as it's cracked up to be.
