Calling all Atheists....

I'll second Pastafarian. I've been touched by his noodley appendage.

huck, either "weak" which is to say someone who is more rightly defined as "agnostic" but says they personally don't believe there is a god......all the way to "strong"....which are those that say "there is definitely not a god."

wow...not too many of you willing to admit you are atheist eh? i am impressed with those of you who have replied.

this is not the point of the thread (nor is some evangelistic endeavor i assure you! although i would love it if you came to know God, but really not my goal in this thread).....but this is a funny article that just popped up in the past few days. not sure if it has been discussed:
The Link

I believe faith is irrational.

I also believe that atheism is irrational.

The rational answer is simply "I don't know".

mop,

Is that article the controversial second talking point? Doesn't say much to me. Sure, people trade one supernatural belief for another.

The problem with the overall purpose of the article is that it tends to equate beliefs in the Christian God as somehow better than the belief in the paranormal. To say only 14% of Assembly of God members believe in the paranormal is false, as God, himself, is paranormal. So, as I see it, 31% of non-Christians believe in something you would call "pagan" paranormal, like astrology and palm reading. 100% of Christians believe in the Christian paranormal. That leaves 69% of atheists who don't believe in anything supernatural, and 0% of Christians.

And I agree that somebody who doesn't believe Western medicine works is irrational. The problem with Western medicine isn't so much the doctors' fault as it is the patients. A doctor can tell you that you're better off eating and living healthy, but most patients just want doctors to shut up and fix the problem after it occurs rather than preventing its occurrence. The core of Eastern medicine is generally similar to what Western medicine now calls Wellness programs. Live right and you are less likely to get sick. Treat the whole person rather than the injury. People that go to Eastern medicine practitioners are generally ready to overhaul their entire lifestyle to feel better. Anyone would see results from that. Eastern medicine runs into huge problems with quackery in its treatment of already established illnesses.

I am not an atheist, because by definition it presupposes that theism is a valid world view, which is illogical. But I'll play.

Agnostic Front.

I have no way of knowing and do not see that anyone else does, either.

I used to think that the existence of god was an interesting topic, but not so much anymore.

I always hated church. Never enjoyed it or looked forward to it even once. Just awful. The day I decided that worship and faith and the pursuit of a place near god was not for me was a happy day indeed. Never looked back, really, and have no regrets.

I don't need to know if there is a god. I know how I feel, which is indifferent given the impossibility of knowing in a manner I find deserving of the term.

Agnostic.

that's a funny article. the whole premise is based on the thought that religion itself isn't a superstition.

but what's the difference between believing in astrology vs believing that a person who died 2000 years ago is god's son. today we have many quacks who have their own religions who profess to be god's son. you/we label them as kooks, but since someone did it 2000 years ago, he's the real son?

christianity takes itself too seriously.

I am not relligious. A-religious, which would include a-theism, a-pantheism, a-ancestor spirit based things, etc.

My education and work has been in science and engineering. Do I know there is no god? I can't know such a thing, one way or another. But, my practical view is that there is no evidence whatsoever in favor of such a belief. Yet, religious behavior and thinking is the normal state of affairs for humans, across cultures. There is no changing this, I'm not interested in changing this. I am interested in protecting myself and my loved ones from the wrongs that oft arise from this behavior set. No, I'm not wanting to protect them from the good.

Bob Dylan is closer to god than god is to god.

I believe in love. I believe in the beauty of this universe & each individual's separate search to find how they fit into this world. Enjoy the simple. Respect the complex. Celebrate the inspiring. Seek to learn & understand more each day. Let love wash over each of us in waves each day.

I am an atheist, but I seem to have missed mop's deadline. So I guess that makes me what, Episcopalian?

I am agnostic. I believe there something out there. A life force, an energy, something.

I don't know what it is and don't try to pretend I understand it. And I'm OK with that.

you pagan scums should learn how to read. the point of this thead is mop's post on the 2nd page w/ the link to the article. let me splain, not that taka too long...let me sum up.

christian folks believe in less hocus pocus stuff. the more unchristian you are, the more apt you are to believe in big foot or the noodle moster/god. or something like that.

anyway, i still think he's trying to save us all. i like that idea better.

ok.....and i am curious to see if there is any correlation between atheism and political leanings. so for those of you who are willing....what is your voting tendency? Dem? Rep? Green? Libertarian?

and why?

that's all i was wondering.

mop you are asking a loaded question. we all know that only republicans can be christians. republicans commandeered christianity and patriotism, didn't you know that?

You should also ask about correlations between religiosity and IQ. Those are fun. Likewise, religiosity and scientific education. Speaking of which, hasn't it been a few days since you've authored another bomb-throwing anti-AGW post?

seriously just very curiuos. i have friends who are "uber" christians who are Dems and friends who are "uber" christians who are Pubs....but it seems that almost all of my friends who define themselves as atheist lean left or libertarian (by the way, i am more libertarian than anything else, but i typically vote Pub due to my stance on abortion).
