Cade McCrary to Texas

The local weekly newspaper for the Lake Travis area has an article about Cade McCrary of Lake Travis committing to Texas as a preferred walk-on. He was #4 for LT if you saw them play. This kid can play football. He is about 6-4, fast, has great hands, and always seemed to be open, even when the opposition knew he was the primary target for Garrett Gilbert. I know Gilbert must be smiling about this one as am I. I believe this is going to end up being great news before he leaves the 40 Acres. But those of us who watch recruiting should celebrate this one.

I watched LT twice last year and McCrary was a standout. I think there was a thread on here earlier wondering what his college prospects were. He was a great high school player, kind of reminded me of ol' Cotton Spreyer.

Glad to have 'em on campus!

that is very good news. i was hoping it would happen.

cade is a fine player. you recall that the elder mccrary was longhorn defensive end coach under mack brown for years. it is safe to say that the mccrarys can afford to send cade to school, and by walking on, of course, it saves a 'ship for another kid.

my impression is that some kids walk on by contacting the staff and getting permission. others are contacted by the staff and asked to come here. latter category being designated 'preferred walkon' since those guys were sought out. probably doesn't mean a thing once all are on campus, though.

in this case, as texas taps has indicated, we got a kid who is scholarship-worthy.

What great news. This guy has fantastic hands, is always open, and best of all has been catching Gilbert's passes for the last 10 or 11 years.
Welcome Cade!!

Wow. I heard good things about this kid but haven't seem him play.

Also great that this doesn't count against the scholarship number which is already stressed.

Yep, saw the kid play also and he has a knack for getting open. He is also aggressive getting to the ball.

You also can't underestimate the connection between him and Gilbert. Look at what Shipley and Colt have done. I wonder if they will room together...

Does anyone know more about his recruitment? It would seem "6-4, fast, has great hands, and always seemed to be open" would be a sure ticket to a scholarship offer somewhere. Is he just a diehard Horn, who committed early to be a walkon, so no one else actively recruited him?

His father is Hardy McCrary who was an assistant under Mack. I think Cade has been intent on attending Texas no matter what. My guess is there may be some other financial aid involved as a student or something else. A preferred walk-on is one who enjoys all the normal perks of Schollie players except books and tuition. They are also encouraged to walk on by the coaching staff. As someone else has said I would guess there may be a schollie coming in the future if he pans out.

other than cost to the family, is there any other advantage to getting a full ride?

i remember the old arrangement nebraska had for in-state kids to walk on, particularly at offensive line. they got local farmer's co-ops, etc, to actually fund the kids going to nebraska. what i don't know is if they kept the walk-on status the whole time there or was there some good reason to switch them to full-ride when they became starters or backups.

if mccrary is good enough to join the rotation at some point -- which i suspect is the case -- will we feel compelled to convert him or could he continue to free up a scholarship?

what kind of forty times, taps?

i'll see what we can do.

smart ***. : ))

oh, i'd take another ghost, wooden shoe?

Preferred walk-ons 'recruited' by the coaches and are allowed to start practicing with the team at the start of fall practice, while the other walk-ons have to try-out to join the team once classes have started. If they make the cut after try-outs they are then allowed to join the team and start practicing.

The younger McCrary's gonna be a player for the Horns when all is said and done. This is a very good thing, and it won't take long for him to earn a schollie.

Every now and then dreams do come true,
... because, this was the one I was hoping for. It only made sense for Cade to come to Texas, and now it's gonna happen.

McCrary's one of those "glue" guys that every team has to have. This isn't to demean his skills...he has plenty of those. He's never gonna be the biggest or fastest player on the team, but he's gonna be a very important part of the team when all is said and done. Congrats on a very smart decision, and I expect to see a scholie in McCrary's future very soon.

I saw McCrary play against Shreveport Evangel - he looked the part in that game, that's for sure. I was thinking that a D-IA offer would come down to a 40 time - tough to tell his true speed off of one game, but he was getting open behind Giles (Shreveport DB who signed with La Tech) and the rest of their DBs. I think they had another DB that signed with Vanderbilt, although I can't remember him so maybe he didn't play that game.

At any rate, this is great news.
