Butler vs Texas game thread

You lose close games when you have no offense to execute at the end of the game. Taylor became the offense with about 6 minutes left and everyone else was just left to stand around. This is what you get and why they are 2-8 or something like that in close games.

Tons of blame to go around for this one. Our bigs are supposed to be the only shining moment for the team, so Ridley/Lammert/Turner each score one more basket than a dead man (to quote Abe Lemons). Against a Butler frontcourt that's all a couple inches shorter than them.

I do not enjoy pulling for Rick Barnes' teams. I want to say worse but I'll leave it at that.

:whiteflag::brickwall:

Cant say I am surprised because this team keeps finding ways to lose games so why should today be any different. It really is time for a change, give Barnes a hearty thanks for his 17 years and 16 tournaments but its time to give him his pink slip along with it.

Texas is not good. None of the players looked any better than the guy across them. Since Butler is not special in any way, just plays hard and well organized, that's saying a lot. Our team is slightly better than average (but not much) in overall talent, and has largely ineffective coaching.

In my opinion, with as little emotion involved as possible, nothing today showed me Barnes deserves another try. This program is stale, lackluster, and needs new blood asap. Without it, we're looking at dwindled interest by our mainstream fans like the start of the 2014 season. Most didn't even tune in until we went on a run and proved to be overachievers that season. Let's shake this up and bring some real excitement for a promising future.

Barnes isn't going anywhere. I don't think we have the clout or basketball cred to hire anyone better. I'd be quite surprised if we could pull anyone who could repeat the "16 tournaments in 17 years" stat.

I thought that bringing back Lanier would solve a lot of the locker room issues and maybe get the team to play tighter ball. It worked in some games but not most. There's no real good reason to end the season like 1-15 against top-50 teams, when you yourself are a tournament team as well. Maybe if you're someone like Texas State or Louisiana Tech that's what happens... you schedule top teams to play against in the nonconference slate and hope that you're good enough to win your conference, and get slaughtered by good teams. But you can't consistently lose by 2-8 points against EVERYONE. It shows the character and lack of talent on this team. No one can get this team to nut up and make it happen.

Hit the wrong button. Anyway Brad I disagree, do you think that Izzo could not have done some damage in this tournament with this Texas team?

Why the hell is Taylor our only option when a game is on the line?
My point exactly. The game is on the line and the only offensive plan we seem to have is to have Taylor try to penetrate a packed zone defense?
Because that is Taylor. The more he scores, the more he forgets about his teammates. Hell with this bunch of passive players they are probably happy with Taylor's street ball mentality.

Just hope when Barnes leaves he takes Taylor with him. Taylor is not good for this program.

The play / offense / whatever we ran at the end to get Holmes a corner 3 was really good, even though the shot happened to miss. Too bad that sort of thing is pretty rare for us. Seems like every team in a close game today has had their offense fall apart when they needed a big shot on the final possession - which made it odd that us whose offense was falling apart for most of the game actually ran something intelligent at the end (when it was probably too late anyway).

I see under developed talent.....

Which is interesting to me as I always thought player development used to be one of Barnes' biggest strengths. He got quality seasons out of guys like Royal Ivey, Jason Klotz, Kenton Paulino, Conner Atchley, and a few others who started off not being considered D1 prospects, or spent a year or two as the 13th man on a 12-man team, etc.

Stat, I agree. For the past six or seven years they don't seem to get better.......except I thought he got the most of lesser talent last year. Maybe he just forgot how to coach up top talent, or maybe he never adapted to the current generation of top talent youth.....millenials. I don't know, but whatever happened it just doesn't work anymore.
