Bush connecting with veterans

I'm not one to praise the Bush administration, but the "Mission Accomplished" banner sure as hell wasn't Bush's idea. He had reservations at the time and expressed them.

Basically, as a well known center-left poster on this board I was affirming the basic humanity of Bush, as I think Obama's response to veterans is evidence of both good will and good intentions. No one has perfect judgement, but I think both Bush and Obama operate on much purer motives than those ascribed to them on this board.

Let me announce with great aplomb I am in complete agreement with Shiner's post "Haters are gonna hate."

Typical Liberals, hating on all things military. This thread was about the Wounded Warrior project and all they can do is spit at George Bush, how sad that you consider yourselves Americans, you are an embarressment(sp). Please move to Canada like your forefathers.

Roma, I'm really interested to know how T-Day '03 was grandstanding. You know, since it wasn't, and you're just pulling **** out of your *** and everything.

And I am not loyal to Bush. Not of the George variety anyway.

If I recall, the "Mission Accomplished" banner wasn't about Iraq but the fact that the ship had completed a cruise. Sorry, I can't find the link or the story. It was very unfortunate moment for W.

it was the longest mission any nuke aircraft carrier had even done. and the longest combat deployment by a carrier since nam.

People can choose to believe the Captain of the ship or not but he said the banner was the crew's idea.

Actually, Saddam was turned over to Iraq for a trial by their people for the atrocities(sp) he committed? Bush didn't spike any football or celebrate any anniversaries, where in the hell do you come up with this crap?

Barry is the TO of Presidents, let's ask the 7 dead Afghans about his surprise trip to the country to run out to the Star and spike the football?

Here is Bush's speech about the capture of Saddam, how about one of you liberals post Obama's and let's compare them?

Good afternoon. Yesterday, December the 13th, at around 8:30 p.m. Baghdad time, United States military forces captured Saddam Hussein alive. He was found near a farmhouse outside the city of Tikrit, in a swift raid conducted without casualties. And now the former dictator of Iraq will face the justice he denied to millions.
The capture of this man was crucial to the rise of a free Iraq. It marks the end of the road for him, and for all who bullied and killed in his name. For the Baathist holdouts largely responsible for the current violence, there will be no return to the corrupt power and privilege they once held. For the vast majority of Iraqi citizens who wish to live as free men and women, this event brings further assurance that the torture chambers and the secret police are gone forever.

And this afternoon, I have a message for the Iraqi people: You will not have to fear the rule of Saddam Hussein ever again. All Iraqis who take the side of freedom have taken the winning side. The goals of our coalition are the same as your goals -- sovereignty for your country, dignity for your great culture, and for every Iraqi citizen, the opportunity for a better life.

In the history of Iraq, a dark and painful era is over. A hopeful day has arrived. All Iraqis can now come together and reject violence and build a new Iraq.

The success of yesterday's mission is a tribute to our men and women now serving in Iraq. The operation was based on the superb work of intelligence analysts who found the dictator's footprints in a vast country. The operation was carried out with skill and precision by a brave fighting force. Our servicemen and women and our coalition allies have faced many dangers in the hunt for members of the fallen regime, and in their effort to bring hope and freedom to the Iraqi people. Their work continues, and so do the risks. Today, on behalf of the nation, I thank the members of our Armed Forces and I congratulate 'em.

I also have a message for all Americans: The capture of Saddam Hussein does not mean the end of violence in Iraq. We still face terrorists who would rather go on killing the innocent than accept the rise of liberty in the heart of the Middle East. Such men are a direct threat to the American people, and they will be defeated.

We've come to this moment through patience and resolve and focused action. And that is our strategy moving forward. The war on terror is a different kind of war, waged capture by capture, cell by cell, and victory by victory. Our security is assured by our perseverance and by our sure belief in the success of liberty. And the United States of America will not relent until this war is won.

May God bless the people of Iraq, and may God bless America.

Thank you.

You know your rant is weak when you have to deliberately change the context.
The point was made that Bush NEVER implied in a speech that his opponent would not have gone after Saddam

so the supporters had to change things a bit to try to score a point.
From BBB's link that
"When David Gregory pointed out that President Bush had used the same tactics in 2004, Gillespie replied that Obama, unlike Bush, crossed a line by suggesting “that Gov. Romney wouldn’t have done” what Obama did in the Bin Laden case. According to Gillespie, Republicans in 2004 simply depicted Bush as “a strong leader. You don’t see him saying, ‘and that guy [John Kerry] would have done something different.’ ”

the article goes on to point out what other people said about Kerry.
OTHER PEOPLE. Bush did not say kerry would have done something different.
weak attempt

and nothing anyone can whine about Bush will diminish the love our military has for President George W. Bush as their CIC, then or now

Well, this is fun. We are now discussing varying degrees of arrogance, gradations of good taste, and relative measures of troop affection for the Commander in Chief.

Allow me to state the obvious: Both men are politicians who are not above a little shameless hucksterism to get re-elected; both have made decisions using what each perceives to be the nation's best interest, and both are the victims of irrational ideological driven hatred.

The difference between Bush and Obama is a matter of their leadership styles and policy choices, not this other nonsense.

Actually, this whole thread got off on a bad foot. I shouldn't have let it irritate me.

Like the "What a REAL President Does" thread, some people can't just say "well done!" It must be "better done than you! In your face!"

Compliments to Bush on riding with the vets in Palo Duro Canyon. Not so many compliments with how the story was packaged by the op.

I'm sorry, RV, for an apparantly inartful and misleading OP. I was honestly trying -- in a straigtforward, non-partisan way - to honor a man doing something I find admirable. The first few responses even had me believe I was on track...

In fact I would have even imagined making money on a bet that I could start a thread expressing an honest opinion and have the first two supportive posters be ShinerTX and Horn6721.
