Bush connecting with veterans

Say what you will about George W. Bush, the man is not distant, aloof and uncaring. His bicycle ride with veterans in the Palo Duro Canyon makes an important statement. The Link

This is the second year he has had this event.
I disagreed with many of his decisions and positions but I knew he did what he thought was best for all Americans.

And the people who served under his CIC command love him and still do.
This is a great event that shows the grit these people have.

You know
Shiner is exactly correct.
Can anyone point to a time that Bush was publically petty about any newsperson/ pundit/ politician/ opponent's criticism of Him?

How was he disposed towards these guys while in office? Didn't he avoid contact with wounded or dead following the invasion? He took a surprise turkey, grandstand move, to Baghdad I remember that.

Oh yea, and he needlessly invaded another country on false pretenses that killed tens of thousands, maimed tens of thousands more, cost a fortune and accomplished next to nothing for the good of the US. That should be in the balance as well.

I don't know about contact with families upon the return of dead soldiers, but he was a frequent visitor to Walter Reed and other hospitals. He did so without press in tow for photo-ops. He even drew praise from Chris Matthews in this regard (no link, just from memory).

Haters are gonna hate, as they say.

You need to learn when the US Army is sent in to deal with bad guys.

You didn't know it then. Apparently, you don't know it now.

Saddam was bad, yes. But, unlike you, I don't advocate sending in our boys to deal with every bad guy.

I can't really believe that people actually frame our use of armed forces in terms of dealing with "bad guys". Simplistic, naive, ignorant. The holy trinity of modern day gop'isms.

Far be it from me not attempting to edumcate the lessers.

There's a great article in a recent Atlantic about John J. Mearsheimer (sp). You should really read that before you spout off with more "bad guy" analysis.

And it was soooo cooooool to watch the tanks rolling across the border with the flights of helicopters overhead! Great TV where good guys fight bad guys.

Interesting the Bush picture is from 2005. That's quite a while after the invasion and my recollection is that he made the visits after criticism. I could surely be wrong.

Here's what I've learned on Horn Fans today, Craig.

Posters have no idea what either "spiking the football" or "grandstanding" means.

Grandstanding is a time-waste for perceived personal gain. Bush thought the war largely over and was thanking the troops. While he personally likely felt gratification, that was not his primary goal. Bush is not one to toot his own horn and he never was. It is lunacy to dispute this. I concede the banner was a mistake and it is highly predictable a few self-professed independents much more critical of the GOP than Dems would immediately use this against my point. But, to do so is a fundamental misrepresentation of Bush. Carry on smart guys.

6721, how can anyone not?

Rex's justification above that Bush probably thought the war was mostly over (was his admin's G2 really THAT bad?) would give a bit of credibility to him just thanking the troops and not grandstanding, but he KNEW - and said as much - that there was much more fighting ahead.

It was Karl's idea. Of course it was grandstanding. But again, so is BO's trip; and an incumbent pres runnig for reelection can do that. I have no problem w/ either event....but BO's trip DOES have some substance to it, whereas Bush's "Mission Accomplished" rang hollow and phony....we all knew it wasn't over with.

Meso, you can argue Mission Accomplished was grandstanding and at least you'd make an argument that makes sense. I was responding to Roma's post about his Thanksgiving Day '03 visit. That was not grandstanding in the least, yet, was portrayed as such until some great mind in here set him straight.

I personally believe Bush made a grave error with Mission Accomplished, though, did not grandstand. You can disagree with me if you want if you desire to be wrong.

Democrats know there's a chance they might be
