Burnt Orange & White Spring Game Thread

Maalik looked good in warm ups but did not play. Imo, card looks more in control than last year. Ewers does seem fluid but too soft a ball for this level. Maybe I’m wrong but looked so to me. Needs more zip. Kept hoping to see Bijan but understand why he was kept out. Remarkable crowd for a team with last years record.

If we were in normal, pre-portal, pre-NIL times, I believe Card would start. But today we need to consider who we would least like to lose. From what I’ve seen, Card is solid, not special. Mack said when he benched Chance Mock that Chance did nothing to lose his position. Just thought VY was special. Is Ewers special? That’s what I hear. Saw glimpses Saturday. We’ll see.

Ewers is special, no doubt. Looks better than Simms for what it is worth. I don’t know if he ready in 2022 though.

Card has more mobility than Ewers. Announcers say that gives him a head up until the OL shows improvement

If Ewers isn't named the starter this week, Sark should be fired. I saw enough of Card in the Arkansas game. If Bijan and Co. can rush for 150+ each game, Ewers will challenge for the Heisman Trophy. In other words, it's all about the offensive line. Same song, different verse.....

Conversely if the OL is bad in pass pro and Ewers is running for his life then Card is the better sacrificial lamb.

I didn't see the scrimmage, but if Ewers is really good at quick assessment and getting rid of the ball that has much more upside than a qb running for his life. You connect on a couple 20+ yd gainers because he found the open guy the pressure will release and be more manageable. The more the QB runs the more I blitz unless it's VY running. Card looked completely lost scrambling for his life last year. Maybe he's better now, I don't know.

Both you and the other poster are basing your comments on the Arky game. Time to let it go and use fresh data. Simms as a freshman wasn’t ready. Ewers has a better deep pass but again he needs time to throw it.

If Ewers doesn't start, Sark will lose all remaining goodwill with the splintered fanbase. How can the "Highest Rated - Greatest QB Recruit in History" not be ready to be thrown into the fire? You live and die with Ewers. I'll take 0-12 with Ewers versus 6-6 with Card. It's simply time for a change. Ewers needs as many reps as possible this season. Hopefully the OL improves enough to keep him upright!

The Arky game I saw in person, but I'm basing it on every game he played. He was lost and that's the only data we have on him. I refuse to use a scrimmage going at 1/2 or 2/3 speed as part of the equation so there is no " fresh data". Last year he did great in practice, good enough to win the job, then was lost in games.

Ewers threw the only interception on a quick slant pattern.

He looked much better late in the season when Thompson was hurt.

I trust sark to do what he says.
He will start the player that gives us the best chance to win.
Right now.
Not the next season or the next after that.
And that may well be Ewers by season opener.
I would start Card if we played the opener next weekend.

His deep ball looked great.
Right on target and hit the wide open receiver in stride.
On the other hand, that ball Card threw to JT Sanders over the middle had flames shooting out it's ***.
And what hands Sanders had to reach out and pull it in for a catch.

He did hit a good one. But let's not forget the ones he threw high or behind. I'm not ready to throw my opinion either way...like it would matter anyway.

Did Maalik Murphy play?

He did not, I was really wanting to see him play. both Ewers and Card looked similar, Ewers had better touch on the deep ball. Tough decision for Sark. I really hope Card pulls out the 1 spot, we have GOT to get away from having to play freshmen at the QB position or any position for that matter.

I could be wrong but don’t think a single coach in America believes what you just wrote.

Thoughts after viewing the scrimmage and then watching the recording:

1) We are loaded at WR, which we need to be with that "WR trap" or whatever you call it. It is going to get a couple of them knocked out against Alabama & OU. In 55 years of watching virtually every Texas game, we have NEVER run that play, not even last year. Using a WR to "trap'" at DL or LB screams the OL is horrible.

2) Lining up one or TWO TEs as wingbacks to assist the OL that can't handle a simple pass rush, we need OL.

3) As long as #70 is on the field we are in trouble even if we are playing Smithville Middle School. Worst OL I've seen in all my years of watching Longhorn football. See #2 as to the coaches' thoughts on his ability.

4) It appeared that Ewers made a quick read on the long TD pass. Novel concept for a Longhorn QB, making same read as the WR and hitting him in stride.

I won't enter the Ewers vs Card debate and will spare you the comments of a former D-1 DC with National Championship rings, but I shall admit I was impressed with many of the things Ewers did. That said Ewers last start may have been the worst game he ever played and that was against a well-prepared defense of questionable talent.

Comments on what I referred to as the WR trap, which really isn't a trap but rather assist? While I am sure OU will be prepared for that play, I'd love to see one of our larger WRs layout an OU LB.

Starting Card is the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing again, and hoping for a different result. I just don't believe Card magically became a better QB over the winter. We've been sold/told that Ewers is a generational talent. Let's find out. If he's really that special, things will be just fine. If not, things will simply be just the way they were.

FWIW.... I like Card. I just think a change in needed.

Ron Pawlus is on line 1.

I remember in 2002 some this great 5* QB was thrown into the fire and beat out some guy named Chris Simms and some guy named Chance Mock to win the starting QB job. Good thing MB had seen the same thing over and over again and knew not to expect a different result. MB simply knew if was time for a change.
