Bundy's 2010 Top 30

OK, I’ve seen a bunch of film and I’ve got a pretty good idea of who I consider to be the top 30 players in Texas for 2010. We’ll go by position. I’ll make a few comments along the way. Apologies for any errors in the names.

QB—Case McCoy--best QB in the state. Very accurate passer, OK arm strength.
QB—Tyler Arndt—don’t understand the lack of offers
RB—Lache Seastrunk—a bigger version of Michael Goodson as a high schooler
RB—DJ Jones
RB—Dontae Williams—violent runner, really like this kid
RB—Traylon Shead—competition is a concern
RB—Stephen Hopkins—big RB, a hammer who can move the chains
WR—Mike Davis
WR—Darius White
WR—DeAndrew White
WR—John Harris—all of these WRs are better than Greg Timmons who was the best in the 2009 class. Really, really like both Darius and DeAndrew White
OL—Trey Hopkins—5 star stud
OL—Jake Matthews—5 star on name, mid-4 star on talent/production
OL—Luke Joeckel—this is a tough one. There are about 4 or 5 guys who could go here (T Thompson, E Washington, Espinosa, the big fat kid at The Woodlands). I like Joeckel the best, though I’m not married to him here.
DE—Jackson Jeffcoat—5 star
DE—Reggie Wilson—5 star
DT—Taylor Bible—real, real good player. 3 year starter.
DT—Daniel Noble
DT—DeAires Cotton
DT—Jay Guy (when you write the obituary on Mike Sherman, make sure you highlight the staggering whiffs along the DL)
LB—Corey Nelson (stud)
LB—Tevin Jackson—love this kid’s clips. Perfect inside LBer. Will be 230 by the time he lines up for conference play as a freshman, running a sub 4.6.
LB—Shaun Lewis
LB—Aaron Benson
DB—Adrian Wilson
DB—Ahmad Dixon
DB—Covington Bynum
DB—Rashod Favors (could spin into a LB)
DB—Tyler Stephenson (real nice cover CB)
DB—Luke Muncie—somewhat of a homer pick (I attended KOHS). Could also spin into a LB. Apparently Ohio State has offered

Comments. Well, I guess the major issue to address is Conner Wood. I think he’s a fine player, and would be ranked somewhere between 31-40, but I don’t see *it* in the film. Certainly he’s a worthwhile pick up, but I like McCoy and Arndt’s videos better (Arndt’s sophomore clips are excellent).

Lack of TEs. D Terrell seems to be the candidate to end up a TE, but he’s more of a Mizzou-type TE rather than an in-line TE.

There are a ton of good (read mid-3 star to low 4-star) OLs but few top end guys. Hopkins/Mathews are both real, real good. Hopkins especially. Love his feet.

Very good! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Bundy.

Cool to see McCoy so high on your list.

Other UT verbals that are on your list:
WR - John Harris
OL - Trey Hopkins
DT - Taylor Bible
DT - DeAires Cotton
LB - Tevin Jackson
LB - Aaron Benson
DB - Ahmad Dixon

So 8 of UT's current 12 verbals made your top 30.

Question, why not have Darius Terrell or Carrington Byndom on your list? I saw your comments about Terrell so maybe that is why with him.

Interesting take, thanks. I've not seen tape on McCoy, so I'm not one to pass
judgment either way. I also haven't seen tape on Hopkins, but I'm glad to
hear such a good report. I was initially concerned that he was a little light
in the britches to merit such a high rating. I agree with your assessment of
the wrs. If we don't get Seastrunk, I want 2 of Shead, Williams and Jones.

It's a good list Bundy...I'm a little surprised that you have McCoy so highly-rated and don't have Wood in the top thirty, but otherwise, I pretty much agree with how you have 'em rated. I've been wondering when you were gonna show up with your list. Now, if we can just get miller's take on the Shermanator's recruiting off of your list.

Sherman's problem isn't recruiting. I mean, he assembled a staff of non-recruiters and he himself hasn't been in the recruiting wars in about 15 years. Of course he's gonna suck at it. Its like asking Mugsy Bogues to post up Shaq. Bad things are going to happen if you expect success.

What is killing Sherman is his lack of coaching/developing the talent he has on campus. If he could do something with the horde of mid-3 stars he has to work with, perhaps he'd win enough to start being able to recruit better. But he laid an egg on the field so his recruiting is stuck in neutral.

Gotta do one or the other, and he's done neither.

Thanks Bundy, it seems like you come around here less often. I take it you weren't thrilled with the Sherman hire nor the first year of his regime?

Who do you think the ags have a good shot at getting?

I'd say you have Sherman's problems pegged pretty well Bundy, but he also has a very bad location problem. Agricultural has us to the west, okie to the north, and LSU to the east, with a resurgent Rice and Houston down in H-town, and Baylor coming on strong in central Texas. Realistically, who do you outrecruit right now?

Case will never take a snap at Texas?

I'm sure a lot of people said the same thing about Colt.
I think the truth is we don't know. These are young kids and anything can happen. We'll see.

yeah, i butchered Byndom's name. probably should just call him the DB from Lufkin.

I think TAMU's best shot at kids on this list are:

Mathews (probably a 30% shot)
Joeckel (25%)
Shead (90% if Mack doesn't offer, 1% if he does)
Guy (I think we have an outside shot at stealing him from Cal, maybe 10%)
S Lewis (35%)
L Muncie (40%)
Stephenson (25%)

Every year there are loads of mid-to-high 3 star (or less) players who develop and explode on the college scene. Hell, the last mock draft I saw had 3 2-stars going in the first 10 picks (Jason Smith, Aaron Curry and BJ Raji). Top 2 in the Heisman were both 3-star QBs (McCoy and Bradford). There are players out there that aren't getting the huge press clippings that will become dominant D1 players. Sherman has to be better than most at identifying these kids.

I'd argue there are 2 main jobs a head coach has in college football:

(1) identifying and signing talent (recruiting)
(2) developing talent (coaching)

Great coaches can do both. Successful coaches do 1. If you can't do either you get fired. Sherman hasn't shown he can do either.

There's a good chance he goes 0-for-the-B12 South again this year. To me that is the most interesting question. Can he go 0-10 versus the B12 South and still keep his job?

I couldn't imagine a guy worse than Fran. Turns out the very next guy will be worse than Fran.

You've got some very good takes on the state of affairs in CS Bundy. I'm not sure who aggy could have hired, other than maybe Briles, to clean up the mess over there, but it's becoming obvious Sherman isn't the man for the job.

Pretty good list, however I do think you are missing BIGTIME with Connor Wood. However, I do respect your opinion and your willingness to go against everyone else.

coolhorn, I suggested Briles on Texags before Sherman was hired and no one there looked at him as a serious candidate. Thoughts might be different now.

Thanks for the list Bundy.

NEVER try to make sense with a bunch of aggys texorange...they don't like to be confused with the facts...except for Bundy, who's far and away the most rational aggy fan posting on this site.

by the way, just saw Dorsey's film. He's a beast. probably need to slot him in the top 30 as well. Maybe peel away one of the DBs or RBs.

With Bible and Dorsey eventually starting, it sounds like nobody's gonna make a living trying to run up the middle on us, plus we should get a nice middle push in rushing quarterbacks.

My take on McCoy is that he is probably not a top 100 in Texas, much less in the nation. Nothing against him, but Connor Wood is a big time player who will keep McCoy on the pine except for mop up time. (That is the reason for the

in my earlier post). Anyway, thanks for the post.

Uh Uh...the Shermanator's a good ag...they'll give him at least as long as they gave Franny. Besides, aggy doesn't really lose, they just run out of time to the tune of 77-0 occasionally.

Briles was stomping Sherman down by 4 TDs before he called the dogs off. I can't see why there would be that much of a change from one season to the next other than the game being at home.

RObert Griffin is the real deal as far as college QBs go. I'd set Baylor as an early 3 point favorite at Kyle Field right now.
