Bucky Godboldt says

that coach Mackovic was such a control freak that he wanted to remove the Longhorn from the helmets as part of his plan to cut ties with past Longhorns. It's well known that he wasn't welcoming toward former players, but this is some crazy ****.

This is according to what my dad heard Bucky say last week on his new KVET morning gig with Bob Cole.

I beg for forgiveness if this is old news.

I has heard something along the lines of that before. I know he was not big in to ex athletes at all. so this would not surprise me at all.

And does cutting ties with the past ever accomplish anything at a tradition rich school but getting the coach fired?

I love Bucky Godbolt. I used to love his radio show. But Iwonder if JM ever talks about Bucky being a hardcore alcoholic? Bucky has some issues with it all he should let go.

Damnit, this is the second time this year I have stuck up for John M. and both within minutes. I need to sleep.

Wow, what an unnecessary cheap shot. Is the story true? If so, what does Bucky's personal life deamons have to do with this story?

Why does Bucky keep talking **** about JM? He should let it go. The point is that JM prob., hopefully does not talk about him in negative ways. It seems sometimes that Bucky is clinging to a lot of negativity or bad feelings that he would be better off by letting go.

To Buck's credit, he is sober and has been for a good while. He also talks openly about it and about the things he did or was capable of doing then. I see that as a way to hopefully motivate others to seek help and fathom the courage to battle their demons and quit as well.

I would never ever say anything that would possibly be hurtful to Bucky Godbolt. If I thought my post would have been, I'd have not made it. I have far too much respect for the man to do so.

if only there were someone who posted on this board who had inside knowledge of what john mackovic was thinking back then and could tell us if there's any kind of truth to this. if only.

If true, it wouldn't be too surprising and probably demonstrates why he wasn't ready for the big time. Oh yeah...no defense didn't help either.

yes I agre MadS, I seriously wish there was someone who would frequent this board and might possibly have some insider knowledge about what Johnny M might possibly have been thinking....

too bad there isnt anyone who posts here with pedigree....

Nope, nobody that would have any insight or perspective, nothing. No special point of view. This board is lacking on things like this, sadly...*sending carrier pigeon West*

I would imagine that Bucky is encouraged to make Mackovic comments on-air from time to time. What Longhorn fan wouldn't perk up or tune in more often to hear some 'inside' information our favorite punching bag/enigma : John Mackovic?

Speaking of Johnny Mack, does anyone have a copy of the staged turkey hunting photo that UT was circulating when he was in a bit of hot water? You know, the Glamour Shots one that was supposed to convince everyone that he really was a Texan at heart.

Too bad nobody may have that photo in an album or on top of a mantle somewhere. Nobody here, at least.

johnnym is my alltime favorite poster. the ire and lack of knowledge still displayed by posters and radio talk show hosts alike, and johnnym stays call and dignified through it all. i'd killed some posters a long time ago.

kudos to you johnny.

Well I thought about writing something long, but I'll keep this relatively short.

There was never a master-plan to alienate or cut ties with ex-players, HS coaches, etc. To suggest so is foolish and incorrect. Also, you have to realize why he was hired in 92 in the first place. One of the big reasons was because he was an "outsider" who could clean up some things around the program that had gotten out of hand. This included limiting access for HS coaches and ex-players, which unfortunately pissed them off b/c they were used to getting anything they wanted, whenever they wanted. HS coaches were used to sitting in on meetings, ex-players were used to having free reign on the weightroom whenever they pleased and interrupting practice to coach guys. The Admin didn't like it and knew that another from the same network of coaches was probably not going to be able to fix it, so they hired an outsider, and he "fixed" that.

Here's a great story from spring of 92. During one of the first spring practices, an ex-player (and a rather notable one), interrupted DB drills in order to coach up one of the guys. In the middle of practice. He was told thanks, but we have competent coaches and we'd like to leave the coaching to them. Well, this really pissed him off and he went around and told all the ex-players he could find that "we aren't wanted anymore, he doesn't want us around". This wasn't the case, but the line hadn't been drawn in the past about what is acceptable and what is not, so the drawing of the line really infuriated some.

I don't have any memory of anything like what Bucky suggested. If it were to have ever been discussed, I am nearly certain it would be in the same way that coaches often take the decals off helmets - as an incentive for guys to "earn" it back. That could have happened, I really don't remember. If Bucky suggested that the idea was floated in order to cut ties with alumni, that's just ridiculous.

I haven't seen Bucky in a number of years and wish him all the best. I have a feeling he likes to trot out a JM story here and there simply to stay relevant and bring something unique to the conversation.

Does anyone know if he was like this pre-2001? I think so, but I really don't know. Because I remember he was one of the first to call looking for a job when pops got the Arizona gig. Maybe he's bitter that he wasn't hired, I don't know.

I can assure you that pops spends no time at all thinking or talking about Bucky Godbolt.

Bucky was just using that ideaas an example of how Mackovic tried (and needed in some cases) to change the culture of what UT football was at that time (which wasn't good).

I believe the idea was to replace the Longhorn logo with 'TEXAS' in burnt orange block letters.

I imagine that DB coach you are talking about just thought that ex-players helping out wasn't expressly prohibited and it was more of a gray area.

Well, I may be in the minority here, but I liked Johnny M. He brought us out of the "3 yards and a cloud of dust" age. DKR didnt want to pass the ball. Freddie always said in the off season that we were going to throw it alot more, but we never did. David Mc.......well........ With Johnny Mack, the offense was not predictable. I wouldnt mind having him now as our OC. Like Johnny M said, he was brought here to straighten things out. Apparently the convicts were running the prison (sorta speak). Why cant we just thank the guy for doing his job and wish him well? As bad as some of his defenses were, it couldnt have been as bad as last years piece of crap. I remember people saying "this defense is going to be sick". Hell, I thought they meant they were going to be good. I dont know if they were sick, but I damned near puked everytime they took the field. We'll just wait and see what happens this year, Just one question for Johnny M....Why didnt your Dad start James Brown against Rice the year they beat us. He had a great game the week before against ou and Morenz still wasnt healthy. I would just like to know if you can share it with me, or if you know.

I really don't know so this is speculation. JB was not a good practice player but was a great Saturday guy. So even though he performed well in his first game, a week of poor practicing may have done him in.

Had the coaches seen him practice poorly and then play well more than one time before that game, perhaps it would have been a different story. What a ****** game, thanks for bringing it up.

yeah....mackovic was important...i liked him. i actually think he was a class act and got treated poorly. sometimes i still wish he was our offensive coordinator. he was far more creative than our current oc.
