to be honest, I don't think the noise surrounding this issue (whether, and what, in fact, Matthews pere said or didn't say...) is driven quite as much by the hope of getting Matthews fils to sign on the dotted line as it is by the fact that the criticism validates some widely-held opinions. There has long been a current (way too loud for an undercurrent) of dissatisfaction with our running schemes, and IF a HOF lineman can share those, perhaps there is a chance to effect a substantive change in philosophy/technique.
At the end of the day, it's hard to argue with our offensive output over the last few years. However, it's also hard to argue that the running attack has been rather a hit-and-miss proposition since Mr. Young left us. As others have stated, self-examination should be an ongoing process, regardless of a single recruit...
