Bruce Matthews on the OL

Jake Matthews son of Bruce Matthews (perhaps the greatest OL in NFL history) is a top recruit. One service has him ranked 3rd in the State of Texas.

Jake likes the Longhorns best. His father likes A&M best. In fact his father would prefer his son not to go to Texas at all according to:
The Link

Which is a pay site.

The reason has nothing to do with Texas dislike or anything else. In fact he supposedly likes the strength and conditioning program better than any other school his son is considering. The reason he doesn't want his son at Texas is the blocking scheme.

So if Texas wants to land Matthews we may have to promise a change in scheme. McWhorter is a solid OL coach who can coach any scheme asked. So I guess the question is, if that is what it's going to take to get Jake's father on board do we do it?

No, what we have in place has worked (as far as wins go), the staff shouldn't change for just one or a few players.

It's not like A&M is churning out OL to the NFL anyways (although Sherman hasn't had enough time yet I suppose).

We'll make due with the 4 and 5 star kids we have.

No matter how I feel about our offensive line coaching and conditioning...No way in hell do I change something based on one recruit if the coaching staff is happy with the way they are already doing things. And lets face it...While I have my quibbles on the blocking for our running game...I think Texas is doing pretty damn well.

I'm pretty sure the only scheme he has problems with is the run blocking schemes. So it wouldn't be changing a lot. I'm sure he doesn't want a whole house change either. I'm sure he just wants more of X style blocking so his son is prepared for the NFL.

I've always thought our scheme could use an update. So to me this recruit may be more valuable if it brings some change.

No way!! We're TEXAS....try that crap with A&M.

If Matthews could convince Seastruck to come to Texas, I am sure the blocking schemes will look a lot better for the next 3 years.

I have seen this crap posted before. I would say that 40+ points a game is hard to argue with, I dont give a **** if your last name is Matthews! Let him to collieville and settle for a blocking scheme that churns out a whopping 20-25 pts. a game. We're Texas, they are not.

Wow, a lot of defensive fans here. I'm sure Mack/Davis/McWhorter are comfortable with their blocking schemes, but if a HOF lineman and current nfl coach would actively sway his son away from a school based on their blocking schemes, then maybe they need to reevaluate their scheme.

this isnt the NFL. The spread and option offenses work on the college level and not in the NFL...we are not in the business of being a farm system for the NFL, we do what is best for Texas...our numbers speak for themselves, if that's a deal breaker for Matthews so be it.

From other posts on the site, it appears this quote never happened. Does anyone even know if Matthews has a problem with our scheme?

Well you can change the blocking scheme and stay in the spread offense. Look at West Virginia (who ran all over OU). They use a much different set of blocking packages for the same plays we run.

The Spread doesn't mean you use zone blocking for running plays.

Sure we score 40+ points a game. That doesn't mean the system can't be improved.

Right but again, other schools more successful at running the ball from the Spread use different blocking schemes. Some use the same ones, but they have linemen generally more suited for zone blocking.

Assuming this is true, I'd think a reasonable course of action would be to listen to any suggestions from Matthews, evaluate them, and use them based on their merits regardless of whether the younger one comes. This applies to suggestions that might be received from anywhere. If we think they help us, use them. If not, don't. This is like any other sort of business decision.

If your question is, "Should we adopt the suggestions even if we think they hurt us but we get the recruit?" then I say no. Separate the usage of the suggestions from the recruit's commitment.

He doesn't want his son going to Texas because of the blocking scheme? Fair enough. He's an NFL Pro Bowl player, he knows what he's talking about, far more than I do anyway. But I call BS that he wants his kid to go to A&M because they have a superior blocking scheme. If that's the real reason then good riddance to meddling fathers, his son can enjoy 12 total wins over his college career.

So our run blocking sceme sucks ***. Who knew? Too bad college, and to a greater extent the NFL, is more about pass blocking, which our OL evidently knows a thing or two about.

Well again according to recruiting sites, etc. Jake's top two aren't his father's top two.

I think his father likes USC first.

I think it should be the kid's decision anyway. It will be four years of HIS life. Good luck to the young man in any event.

Roma, honestly I don't care if Jake Matthews ever plays a down here.

I do however care about our blocking. I'm not a fan of our run blocking schemes. We tried the counter last year (it worked some) but for the most part, our run blocking schemes aren't what I would like.

In the Spring Game we used a different scheme for the I Formation, but I wouldn't mind seeing us resort to that scheme even in the spread.

How does anyone know what the scheme at TAMU will be like in 2010, when Jake Mathews is a freshman? Who will the coach be?

Lotus,

I'll take your word for it. I can surely understand criticism of our blocking schemes and running game, but I don't think one should really desire that a wanted change come about in this way.

If the Bruce Matthews' criticism causes a coach to reassess what he is doing, fine. One should always be reassessing, and I think Mack epitomizes that philosophy of constant self-examination. His moves in the post 2008 season were pretty astounding and damn effective in turning this team around. My guess is that the staff is not complacent. That is not to say they are always right.

Anyways, hook 'em, amigo.

This is starting to shape up like one of those endless threads on how UT will never amount to a hill of beans if we don't have a dual threat quarterback.

I respect Bruce Matthews' bona fides as a hall of fame NFL offensive lineman, and a producer of college-quality offensive lineman sons. I'm sure he's probably a pretty good pro assistant coach. That being said, I'd be surprised if he's not mostly concerned with the Texans' blocking schemes much more than the Texas blocking schemes.

If UT really is his son's choice of schools, great, and he needs to let 'ol dad know he's ready to cut the cords. If he can't, for whatever reason, and opts for four years in collie station with his brother, that's life. Somehow, I think the Horns will muddle through with their collection of four and five star o-linemen, and allegedly sub-par blocking schemes.

Get real. NO recruit is worth changing what works, and our blocking schemes apparently work just fine, given how well we score points. Could they be improved?...maybe, but that's for the coaches to decide, not a bunch of arm chair quarterbacks.

If Sherman's blocking schemes are so pro, maybe he belongs back in the NFL. He's certainly managed to underwhelm at the college level so far. I hope the younger Matthews is able to figure that out for himself, and commits where he wants, rather than where he's led. We had enough parental drama last year with a defensive lineman to last a lifetime. Leave the theatrics where they belong...in the theater.

My two cents worth...

Mack and his ****** blocking scheme were a dropped INT away from the MNC title game last year. I think we'll be fine, papa matthews.

Jake is the focus here (or ought to be), not the daddy.

If Jake wants to come to Texas, then I say "welcome aboard."

If Jake chooses AM because he wants to listen to his dad, that's fine too.

But the train is quickly filling up, and if Jake wants to come, he needs to keep in touch with the staff and make his mind up in the time-frame the staff gives him.

I'm sure not going to let daddy get me all hot and riled when Jake himself favors the Horns.
