I think they totally missed what most people are concerned about. The fact that we traded a known international arms dealer for someone convicted of drug possession. If we had traded a convicted Russian drug possessor, I don't think there would be any, or at least as much, disapproval.

Pretty much what I said. Goes to the ineptness of our State Department and other gov't officials. Our negotiators get a C- at best on a very generous curve. Bout was worth a lot of Americans and allies being freed from the gulags of the leftist state of Russia.
We don't know all the inside baseball of the dynamics in the negotiations, but one factor may be that our side was in such a frantic hurry to get Griner freed soon--now! now! now! Russia knew this. Leverage to Russia. Bout only gets us Griner instead of Griner plus some ex-Marine(s), and a handful of random low-level spies or minor criminals.
