Brett Favre's INT numbers

Here's a question for you. How you respond probably determines how you view Brett Favre.

How you view these single game QB stats?

32-44 -- 342 yards -- 3 TD's -- 2 INT's
29-40 -- 322 yards -- 1 TD -- 2 INT's
24-34 -- 360 yards -- 2 TD's -- 2 INT's

All of them have over 70% completion rates and all have a solid yards per attempt average. If those stats stick out to you, then you probably think Favre is one of the all time greats. Most fans fall into this category. It's like after a round of golf, I tend to forget about my bad shots and only remember the good.

However, football people see the 6 INT's in those 3 games. They also see the 1 INT per 18 attempts. They, like me, think those are average to bad despite the 1,000 yards passing total between the three games.

So, ask yourself if you as a fan would be happy with your team's QB offering up a three game stretch like that. Your answer probably determines how you see Favre.

I already posted some numbers regarding his percentage of interceptions per attempt compared to some other hall of fame quarterbacks and found it to be comparable - better than some, worse than others, and hovering around what appeard to be a rough average of 3% (Favre was at 3.28%) In other words, to paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of his interceptions have been greatly exaggerated.

Some of those guys were/are quality players. But I can't believe you're comparing Freeman, Brooks, Driver and company to HOF Michael Irvin and future HOF Randy Moss with a straight face.

Its really puzzlling why you are acting like Brett Favre hasn't played with some extremely talented players over his career, or that ever other great quarterback played with superstars and Favre with scrubs.

Id take Elway over Favre just for the simple fact that he led his team to 5 Super Bowls and won two of them.

Joe Montana and Tom Brady are the only quarterbacks of the last 20 years I would take over John Elway. I thought he was fantastic before the Broncos broke though and won it all in 1998.

Well, I don't think anyone has acted like Favre's teammates weren't good, or that other QBs worked with supreme talent. At least, I haven't said that, and I haven't interpreted sooner's comments that way. But at any rate, that is certainly not the main point of the argument, and it wasn't really brought up until very recently.

Now if you want to take Elway over Favre, based on his number of Super Bowl appearances, you certainly have a right to. The only point is, by virtually every objective, statistical comparison imaginable, Favre is the superior QB. Sooner's detailed look at their careers demonstrated that. And the only reason we got on Elway is becuase he was part of an earlier point - namely that Favre's interception numbers per attempt are in a perfectly acceptable range for both his contemporaries, and for QBs already in the Hall. Some are better, of course, some are worse.

So, what you've told us that while Favre played 2 more games in his career than Elway, he threw 62 more INT's.

That's precisely my point.

Well, that's one way to look at it. I see that Favre threw an interception 3.28% of the time to Elway's 3.1%. I wouldn't call that markedly better. I would call Favre's 5.04% TD percentage to Elway's 4.1% pretty significant.

But you knew that already. Look, you can bring the total interception number into this - and you have over, and over, and over again - but, when broken down by attempt, it has been shown, repeatedly, that Favre's numbers are not atypical.

Good lord, has there ever been a HF thread with so many individual statistics?
I'll say this about Favre:

(1) Whatever you think of him, this prima dona soap opera act about his reinstatement has the serious potential to tarnish his image. Not completely, but tarnish it nonetheless.

(2) Favre is a hall of famer. No doubt about it.

(3) That doesn't mean he's not overrated. The primary reason he holds so many records is his longevity. He was simply fortunate enough to make it through many, many seasons without getting hurt. If the concussions (and that Navy commitment) hadn't ended Staubach or Aikman's careers early, they would have had similar if not greater numbers.

That's the gist.

Oh yeah, (4) no city of 150,000 people deserves a professional sports franchise!!!! F Green Bay!!!!

IMO, Favre’s TD/Int ratio of 440s/280s is pretty good. He has won several MVPs and 1 ring. Only Brady has been a better QB or more clutch in the playoffs. Manning has been better in the regular season but has choked like a dog in the playoffs (go see his stats vs. the Pats, San Diego last year, etc. in the playoffs) except for the Super Bowl year (mediocre play in the playoffs). McNabb, Hasselbeck, Romo, etc. hasn’t won a ring or many MVPs so not much to analyze there.

Which do you consider the better stat line for a game?

Player A: 17-24 -- 235 yards -- 2 TD's -- 0 INT

Player B: 30-39 -- 350 yards -- 3 TD's -- 2 INT
