Books in a series

The Christ Clone Trilogy

Will make you look around and say "whoa"

But if you start reading them, you have to finish. After I was done I gave the books to my mom, an avid reader (4-5 books a week) with the same advice. In the middle of the second book, she threw it across the room. She said it sat there for 2 days, but in the end, took my advice, picked it up and finished the trilogy. Said it gave her a few things to think about.

I second the Tokein Trilogy (w/ The Hobbit) and the Herbert "Dune" series.

Julian May's "The Saga of Pliocene Exile" (The Many Colored Land, The Golden Torc, the Non-Born King, and The Adversary) is a good sci-fi set.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" is greatness.

I like the Rick Riordan series of Tres Navarre. These are set in San Antonio with one set in Austin. Crime/mystery type but really good quick reads with good twists. I have enjoyed them. "Last King of Texas" is my favorite of the bunch.

For classics you can't beat "The Lord of the Ring" series as noted above.

If you want something more modern that is a page turner,
I agree with some of the previous posters. My favorites:

1) Michael Connelly - Harry Bosch series ----- best crime writer right now
2) Lee Child - Jack Reacher series ---- big, ex-military guy who is smart
3) Harlan Coben - Myron Bolitar series --- sports agent who solves crimes

Newest good thrill writer (not series):
Jeff Abbott (from Austin):
"Collision" -latest book & outstanding
"Fear"
"Panic"

Check out the Jake Grafton "series" starting with Flight of the Intruder by Stephen Coonts. It's similar to Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan "series" in that it's not technically a series, but maintains a list of characters, plot devices, etc.

Jack Reacher series - Lee Child (Tough ex-Military cop who wanders around like Cain in Kung Fu, kicking *** and taking names)

Ender's Game / Ender's shadow series - Scott Card (great fantasy series with terrific characters, mostly kids)

Alex Hawke series - Ted Bell (James Bond wishes he was Alex Hawke)

Discworld - Terry Pratchett (hilarious fantasy series full of social commentary, brilliant writing.)

Kinky Friedman - (crude but funny; an original to be sure)

His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass) - Phillip Pullman (Thoughtful, thrilling, magical, heartbreaking - my personal favorite)

Mark of the Assassin/the Marching Season - Daniel Silva (his Gabriel Allon books are more popular, but the villain Delaroche is worth experiencing in Silva's earlier works.)

I forgot about Ted Bell --- Alex Hawke series (modern day Bond as noted above)
Also, Clive Cussler----Dirk Pitt series (marine adventurer & treasure hunter)

I have really enjoyed Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series -- how does it stack up to other (similar) series like "Ludlum's" Covert-One and Ted Bell's series?
