Big Game Bob Stoops tops another list....

That is idiotic. Stoops may have a lost a few BCS games but he is definitely not 'overrated'.

The guy regularly wins his conference, his team rarely loses at home, he plays good OOC competition, he has won a National Title, played another one, is regularly in BCS bowls.

He is a top flight coach.

I do agree with the rest of the list though.

There's no way he should be ranked ahead of Weiss or Tommy Bowden. I mean I like watching them lose BSC games as much as the next guy, but his regular season record speaks for itself.

I wonder if he''ll be outcoached and ill-prepared this October? Doubt it. This is like aggy posting about UT's lack of conference championships

What a ridiculous article!

As someone else said, listing Bob ahead of Tommy Bowden is an effort in pure absurdity. We've lost some big games, no doubt, but we've won a whole lot as well.

That is a ridiculous article all around in my opinion. A lot of people have been critical of Coach Stoops and Oklahoma for losing several BCS bowl games but nearly all of them have been home watching them play in them the last several years.

Bob Stoops has won the toughest division in NCAA 6 out of 8 years. Yeah but he is overrated because he lost to a few real good/great teams in BCS games.

It's all about perception though, and yes I know that this is just one teeny-weeny website and probably not a general consensus. Basically, you got sports media that have to come up w/ **** to make the game "more interesting". Here's how it goes.

1. Mack Brown can't win the big game.

Post-Ohio State 05- Mack Brown can't beat Oklahoma

Post-Oklahoma- Virginia Tech or Penn State deserves to be #2 not Texas

Pre-Rose Bowl- Yeah Texas is #2 but there is NOOOOOOO way they'll beat a USC team with TWO Heisman Trophy winners, w/ Carroll having 6 wks to prepare

Post Rose Bowl- Mack Brown is great but..........VINCE YOUNG IS GREAT

Then it proceeded to Mack Brown can't beat Oklahoma without Vince Young, that got accomplished so now we're left with Brown can't win championship w/o Young.

It's basically the same thing w/ Stoops. The longer he goes without being able to win a BCS Bowl, the more the media is going to pick and prod at it. Doesn't take away from his ability or brilliance as a coach, just as it doesn't take away from Mack Brown's either.

Stoops doesn't need any Horns fans backing him up, but here goes anyway. I might not like him, mostly because of who he works for, and yep, his teams have a half decade of coming up short in bowl games, but he isn't overrated. He wins most of his regular season games, wins most any meaningful game in Norman, has a nice edge on us, and wins the Big 12 title more often than he doesn't. If that's overrated, I hope we have a run of "overrated" coachs at UT.

Stoops can eat **** and die! If it weren't for piss-poor coaching on our part, his record wouldn't appear as acceptable as it does!

Stupid list. If Stoops isn't the best coach in the country, he's certainly in the top 3, alongside guys like Jim Tressel and Pete Carroll. I can't see how that could put him in "overrated" territory.

Kirk Ferentz, yeah. Even Bobby Bowden, but most people give him a senility pass. Who ever thought much of Tommy Bowden in the first place? I'm not sure anyone thinks much of Charlie Weis any more, either, so he isn't really up there. I'd add Mark Richt to the list of contenders.

I dislike Stoops because of his approach to the players (and because he's the head coach at Zero U!). But I'll have to agree with OUE and the others - Stoops is not overrated - he has dominated the Big XII, he was won a lot of tough OOC games, and he has recruited quite well. I think he (and the Athletic Department) were guilty of "lack of institutional control" in the BRSI fiasco, but the NCAA thought otherwise, and that was the one that counted.

Now you can get to the interesting question - why is it that a coach who can coach as well as Bob does from August through November fails to get the job done in January? The Boise State game can be chalked up to the "team of destiny" designation for BSU, but clearly the losses to LSU, USC, and WVa were cases where the opponent was much better prepared for the game. I'm sure our folks from OU would also like to see an answer to that question.

Stoops overrated? No way. Obnoxious? Yes. Overrated? No.

Stoops isn't overrated. But early in the 1st half of his career at OU he had the big game reputation. He could out coach anybody and was something like 10-1 against top 10 teams. Now it is slanted the other way and not only have his teams lost those big games, but have been blown out in some of them and lost some which they should have been able to win ala Boise St. If anybody thinks of him as that big game coach still then yes he is overrated, but I think most now realize he is still a top coach but not a football genius or anything.

I think it started to change during the K-state Big 12 championship game back in 04 I believe.

Most of it really has to do with the changes in the assistant coaches though.

Bingo. Stoops isn't any more or less a good coach than he was several years ago. He has lost too many good assistant coaches and NOT replaced them with equally talented coaches. It can be said that he's a better player recruiter than coach recruiter.

Interesting to note, Mack has apparently gone the other way, becoming a much better recruiter of coaching talent in the last several years, with the lone exception being last year's defensive co-coordinator. It can also be said of Mack that he corrected that mistake quite nicely with Coach Bleep.

And, looking at the salaries is not a great way to determine if a coach is overrated. A huge salary package is just the price of poker these days.

It can shorten the leash, though.

It's bizarre to say that Stoops is the most overrated coach in the country. Getting to the BCS is like getting to the Sweet 16 in basketball. It's actually much harder to do than it appears, and once a coach accomplishes it, people constantly expect it.

Ferentz should be at least a tie for number 1. Dude has a contract that keeps him paid in the top ten coaches in football, despite Iowa's obvious shortcomings.

Ferentz has to be ahead of all those guys. He gets paid serious $MM and has not done jack other than tieing for the Big 11 title the year that Ohio State won it all (and they didn't play Ohio State that year and got killed in the bowl game).

Stoops is not over-rated. He has had problems in bowl games but I would take the Big 12 skins on the wall and the Silver Hat trophies over Holiday or Alamo Bowl wins.

i think the list is kind of a joke..every one of the coaches listed is on the list because of a lot of talent and poor overall performance. ou has been winning conference championships and playing in bcs games....the boise st. game is a bit of a embarassment but his team didnt show up until the second half of the game and he has won a few of these conferecne championships with some crappy quarterbacks...i dont think stoops is anywhere near the class of failures in weis and tommy bowden, fatso has all world talent, a weak schedule and went 3-9 and lost to navy. he should have been able to run the ball every play and win 6 games. tb is ranked every year in the top 10 in that crappy conference and has never won it, and fl. st. is also a monumental failurew based upon their talent level every year....i hate stoops but i hate him because he is a great coach and in our way every year.

The list is very accurate. To spin it any other way is irresponsible and frankly very soonerish. Stoops' record in Bob's Choke Show games the last 4 years is reason enough to put him at the top. Completely embarassing, pathetic, ill-prepared, soft and clueless. Who else can claim that?
