Big 12!

As the 2010-2011 season winds down the door also closes on 15 years of Big12 competition. This seems like an appropriate time to highlight the overall success of the University of Texas during that timeframe (and yes, I’m including the current season in that statement).

With only baseball left to decide this year, the Horns have won a combined 109 conference and tournament titles since the 1996-1997 season. That's more than double the number won by the Ags, who come in a distant second with 49. Baylor sits in third with 40. In addition the Horns have won 13 national titles, in five different sports, during that timeframe - and have another 15 national runner-ups to their credit. That's a total of 28 national championship and team runner-up finishes across nine separate programs in a span of 15 years.

As far as this season is concerned - even with the unexpected 10th place finish in Football - our conference performance has been strong. Horn results thus far in 2010-11 are M Swimming 1st, W Swimming 1st, W Golf 1st, Rowing 1st, Softball 2nd, W Tennis 2nd, Volleyball 2nd, M Basketball 2nd, M Outdoor Track 2nd, Baseball (currently 2nd, season underway), M Tennis 3rd, M Golf 3rd, W Indoor Track 3rd, M XC 4th, W Outdoor TRack 4th, W XC 5th, Soccer, 5th, W Basketball 7th, Football 10th.

That’s 4 conference titles thus far, with Baseball still to go, and top three finishes in 13 of 19 sports. In fact the Horns finished in the top five in 17 of the 19 sports in which they competed this season. Even during a year where we experienced a few disappointments our overall conference performance surpassed that of any other Big12 school.

Other programs have made inroads in certain areas, and kudos to those who have won conference or NCAA championships in recent years. But as the saying goes, “every dog has their day.” Overall the Horns have been, and still are the dominant force in the Big12, just as they were in the days of the Southwest Conference. Expect that to continue as one league era comes to an end, and another begins.

National titles have included 4 in men's swmming, 3 in women's outdoor track, 3 in women's indoor track, 2 in baseball and the BCS chamionship in football. In addition we have had runner-up finishes in football, men's and women's tennis, women's golf, men's track, volleyball, men's swimming and diving (4), and 4 combined in women's indoor and outdoor track. Final Four appearances in men's tennis (3), volleyball (3), men's and women's basketball, and many college world series appearance in both baseball and softball (4). There's a very long list of national player or athletes of the year across many sports including Ricky Williams, Vince Young, Colt McCoy, Suzanne Reid, Destinee Hooker, Marshavet Hooker, Ian Dusing, Ian Crocker, Sanya Richards, Kevin Durant, T.J. Ford, Cat Osterman and more. No doubt there are baseball and football players who've won national awards at their position that I haven't listed, but only because I don't follow those sports as closely as I do some others. Given the multiple honors received by many athletes, individual national awards are too numerous to count, and that goes double for individual NCAA champions across all sports (which likely number in the hundreds). All-American honors, Olympic and World Champions, World Athletes of the Year - the list goes on and on.

The above lists aren't meant to be inclusive and simply highlight the success of the University during the Big12 era. Congrats to everyone who helped make the University of Texas the premier conference program for 15 years running.

With Baseball clinching a share of the conference crown the Horn's have won five Big12 titles this year, to go along with five second and three third place team finishes. Great job, Horns!
