BIG 12 vs SEC

The Big 12 has 4 teams in the top 10 and so does the SEC. Can someone explain why the SEC is considered to be 1000 times better than the Big 12? All the media coverage and putting the SEC in a class of its own is driving me nuts... I wish the Big 12 and Sec schedule games against each other more often! Hook 'Em...

Well, it would help if the Big 12 champ didn't get their asses kicked by the Big East champ and lose to the WAC champ. Also until last year the North had been a joke for a while. Texas had a nice win in 04, but OU got raped so the conference takes a hit. We win big in 05, but since Kansas has the best BCS win. The SEC last year had 2 dominate BCS wins and a NC. How about Texas kick LSU's *** in the title game and sentiment will turn.

The class of the SEC this year is UGA, FL, and LSU, with AUB and Bama following behind that(although i'm still not sure on bama). I think the Okies are the only team in the big 12 that would be even with that top tier. Texas, mizzou and maybe, maybe tech would probably be good games with bama and aub, although i think tech would get blown out in road games against those teams.

I'll also say this, having been to many a SEC and Big 12 game. Road games in the SEC seem to be a lot tougher. I think a favorite going into a road game in the SEC wouldn't lay as many points. Go to Tuscaloosa, Athens, Auburn, Gainsville, Baton Rouge. IMO, those are the best places in america to watch football.

I am not impressed with anyone in the SEC except UGA. Florida does not look that great, except for Tebow. The rest on the offense for UF is not specially impressive, and Tennessee was waaay overhyped for that game. Also, Auburn's 3-2 victory should completely nullify their presence in the top of the rankings. Overall SEC and Big 12 probably match up well this year. I would put OU v UGA as a toss up. Texas over Florida and I would take the spread. Then Missouri over anyone left who would play. Personally I think a game between Tech and Auburn would be hillarious. They can talk about Auburn SEC defense all they want, but Tech gets their points no matter what, you just have to score more. That game would be like the Cal v Tech game from 05 where Cal was bitching about being left out of the Rose Bowl and then Tech handed them their ***. Hillarity

tech offense may be great against a pac 10 school like Cal, but remember what happened that following year. Tech was averaging close to 40 per game and only managed 10 against(a shula coached) bama.

The SEC being "considered" better than the BIG 12 isn't based purely on the first 4 weeks of football.
It is "considered" the better conference for a plethora of reasons:

Home to back-to-back NC's with a 3rd possibly on the way, 11-4 in BCS games, and last year 8 teams went bowling and another 8 might go this year.

6 teams currently in the TOP 25.

Last year the SEC brought home the Heisman, Doak Walker, Rimington, Nagurski, Outland, Lott, O'Brien, Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Lombardi Awards

SEC leads nation in attendance and revenue.

The most players on NFL opening day rosters (263,2007*)

The list goes on and on and on. Will the SEC be the best conference at the end of this season? Who knows!?! But you are either ill informed or unwilling to learn if you are having trouble figuring out why this SEC is respected TODAY.

Agree with Texasbaby.

At this point in the season though a big question about the SEC's strength appears to me to be "how good, or bad, is Auburn"? Everyone is raving about the LSU defense although Auburn scored 21 points after only getting 3 against Miss. St. That would be the same Miss. St. defense that allowed 38 points to Ga. Tech the following week.

Personally I think that the Big 12 is better than the SEC this year.

boon you hit it on the nail...

If there is a sec game or a big 12 game (that doesn't have Texas of course) I will EASILY watch the SEC game. Other then Texas games, Big 12 games bore me...maybe it has to do with all the day games and having them on FSN (and ****** announcers)...I dunno

But SEC games are awesome compared to Big 12

There is a lot of merit to the idea of an ESPN love fest with the SEC. ESPN is afterall a business and we all know they are not shy about self-promoting.

As far as Big12 games with a national interest I would add OU/Tech CU/Nebraska Tech/Texas Tech/A&M

as far as big g ames. both have 4 in top ten going at it. bot have about 8 in top 30 going at it. the number of meaningful games is virtually identical due to these numbers. the only variable left is perception. aub-ga /or/ ks-mizz, aub-ga sounds better in principle due to bigger crowds/longer tradition, more espn hype; but in truth the games are a a virtual toss-up. ou-ks, ou-neb, ut-tech, ut-ks, ut-mizz, ut-okst, ou-a$m(maybe not this yr), ou-okst... the point is- the sec has a bigger audience of footballaholics and a larger population base thus more hype. the number of games of significant impact on ratings is a toss-up. I choose to believe an afternoon game in lawrence between #7 ut and #14 ks before 50,000 is every bit as big(or exciting) as an evening game in auburn between #7 lsu and #14 auburn before 90,000. the crowd and hype are just the WWF of college football. continue to believe if you will. as for the last 2 nat'l champs. while both were very good teams they benefited from the hype as well. they both backed in when other teams lost there last conference games . ou, mizz, ore, usc, vt, ks / all would have finished ahead of fla and lsu but for late conference upset. in sec the hype would have you believe an lsu loss to ark is worthy of rewarding with nat'l champ oppurtinuty. Mizz didn't find ark so tough

The Big 12 and SEC have long been neck and neck at the top. However, I think the Big 12 is just now becoming a real force from top to bottom with quality teams throughout the league (save for Texas A&M). For the first decade of the Big 12, no other conference surpassed it as far as Football National Championships, National Title Games, BCS appearances and Heisman trophy winners. Only recently has the SEC pulled slightly ahead of us and that could change again this year.

Throughout the modern era of College Football, since 1950, nobody has more national championships or Heisman winners than the collective Big 12 member schools. Not even the SEC.

I think the SEC Conference does more to celebrate itself than any other conference...a close second being the Big Ten (and they don't really have much to celebrate these days aside from the BTN) The Big 12 hardly even promotes itself in its own large metros like Houston or Denver. Sure, we're a relatively young conference still seeking our identity, however there's a buttload of rich history and good things going on in the conference - stories that are worth being told. I'd like to see the Big 12 Conference begin to celebrate itself a bit more.

May sound crazy, but it's a language thing... the sounds of words. Partly by association (past history) but also just the way words sound.

Imagine a NASCAR race... drivers such as Larry Williams. Or Robert McGraw. Henry Jordan. Or, maybe Timothy Bronson.

Okay, now try these names: Kasey Kane. Kyle Bush. Dale Earnhardt. Bobby LaBonte. In Days of Thunder, the Tom Cruise character was named: Cole Tickle.

Now here are football teams in the south. Punch the names as you say them. Auburn Tigers. Georgia Bulldogs. Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida Gators... LSU Bengal Tigers... hear it in your mind, hear ESPN announcers saying those names...

Now try this... Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Colorado... WOW!!.. .Just sends a shiver up your spine, don't it.

The SEC has the words. The langauge. The word-association. All of it. All we have in the Big 12 are two names. Texas Longhorns, and Oklahoma Sooners. It's a 2-team conference.

It will take 30 years of success for words like Missouri or Kansas to rattle anyone's nerves when it comes to football. Nebraska had it but lost it. Or we'd have three names to rattle nerves.

SEC has five powerful names; Big XII has only two. However, in a strange twist, SEC has only two quarterbacks, while the Big XII has five: Colt, Sam Bradford, Chase, Todd and Graham Harrell.

Go figure.

You have to do it year in and year out. The Big 12 has not proven or earned the respect of having 4 or more teams ranked so high on a consistent basis..UT and Ou are the only two that have been there every year since the beginning..
