Best team since 05....really?

Saw Joel Klatt saying this is the best Texas team since 2005. That may be true but this team today, is not in the same league as the 2005. Vince could put a team on his back and take them to victory. Today, we do not have such a player. The 2005 team had elite players all over the field but the secondary was unbelievable. Again, pass d is certainly a concern with this team. Just curious if anyone else agrees with Joel on his comment?

“Since 2005” does not equate to better than 2005. I think this team is comparable to 2008 - we shall see.

08 09, I felt better about our chances in every game. I just don’t have the confidence yet in this team… Kansas was close with a backup quarterback going into the 4th…

I think one big flip from the 2005 team to the 2023 team would be the performance of the run defense vs. the pass defense. We had 6th and 7th DBs making huge plays on the 2005 team, but our run defense was only "meh." The national championship game kind of showed what would happen when we finally hit a good offense.

There's pretty much no other metric that can compare the two. We had the #2 rushing offense in the country and didn't even run near as many attempts as all of the other national leaders (outside of USC).

We were in the upper 25% in terms of committing penalties in 2005, but a lot of those were Rod Muckelroy so take it with a grain of salt.

The only worrisome games we had during the regular season were tOSU, OK State, and A&M. I guess the problem with this statement is that OK State and A&M were actually pretty terrible in 2005.

tOSU finished 3rd in the country. Ok St and A&M kept it competitive till the 4th quarter likely because of poor run defense that you mentioned above.

I completely agree with Klatt here. I am surprised that UT fans have become so cynical that they can’t see a championship team when it is right in front of them. Better start enjoying this year; they don’t come along that often.

2008-2009 didn't have the enforcers & protectors that 2005 did. Two in particular that were bold enough to verify the "offenders" number before seeking justice. Stoops & Barnett will verify, as will Steve O (Can't spell his last name) whomever was referee in OU game (may have been the only OU game Al Dowdell ever did since he refused to do OU games saying they were bad for his funeral home business in Poteau and Heavner)

That is why I said might. I will say that team was pretty dominant and got better each week. As Sabre posted, just not as deep and of course did not have Vince. Colt was lights out that year though.

Is all of this love from the media based solely on the fact that we beat Alabama?
I mean, apparently, they are not near as good as in recent years.

No, it’s because we have been kicking *** starting around mid-3rd quarter and putting the game away by mid-4th quarter. The dominance of the OL and DL is hard to ignore. Also, the way Texas didn’t flinch at Bama is a good sign that they won’t quit without a fight. This is what folks look at when predicting wins.

The lack of the above factors has been what this board has been complaining about since 2010. We finally have it in spades and folks are retreating into a shell. What the hell?

^^^ This.

I added the word "FULL" as I'm gaining more confidence each week....

With the 2023 team, I'm still holding my breath to some degree in each game not named Rice or Baylor... fortunately '23 has been a second half team that scores and finishes. Recent years the teams were first half teams that did not make adjustments, frequently did not hold leads and finish.

Right now, I'll say we are the best we have been since 2009. Time will tell if this team can exceed the '08 and '09 groups.

I see nothing to tell me this team can be considered alongside the 2005 team, and even if we win the ultimate prize this year, I'd still have trouble favorably comparing them to '05.

We may have a championship team (and I believe we 100% do), but we do not have a championship coaching staff. I just can't figure out the bizarre play calling series on both offense and defense sometimes that just puts us in such bad positions.

Still have a very good team. Let's win the next 6 and hope that gets us into the Big 12 CCG. Mathematically it doesn't guarantee that (WVU could go undefeated, and OU could just have one loss to WVU), but realistically it probably does put us in the CCG.

Reminds me of 2008:
Bama win this year = surprise win over OU in 2008
OU loss this year = tough loss to TT in 2008 with key injuries a factor.

I'm hoping that the injuries we had against OU parallel the 2008 injury they had against us (Reynolds) and that winning from here on out is the recipe we need to get into the CFP.
