Best sushi in Austin

a few thoughts:

It's not too hard to discern between places.

Sushi Sake makes me sick.. literally sick.

I love Disco Sishi at DK's place. The only problem is that they've run out of beer both times I've gone.

Mikado is really good. But my favorite is Pango's downtown.

Uchi is ****** sushi, unless you like overpriced westernized poor-excuse for sushi ********. My brother wanted sushi for his birthday so my parents were like "lets try this new place" and it was a ******* collosal waste of a birthday dinner. really overpriced too and the atmosphere is just a little too kitchy for me.

Only places i really eat are sushi sake and Musoshino. Both decent but nothing like what you can get on the coast. The main thing is that the fish has to be fresh and its just impossible when you have to ship it into austin to keep it as fresh as say sushi in San Fransisco where they are right on the bay.

If that's the same Zen as the one on Anderson Lane, then run far, run fast.

just went to musashino by accident. i had heard about it, but never made it in there. then, sunday, me and my girl wanted to try out chinatown grill, since she just moved down the street that day. we went in the downstairs door, and WTF? we were in musashino. i did not know it was there, and there are no (big) signs.
anyway, the sushi was badass. i am going to try sushi sake soon. how much cheaper is it than musashino's/ ive always heard it was "reasonable"

Mikado has gotten much, much better. I judge sushi places about 90% on the quality of their sashimi and the sashimi at Mikado was excellent. Only one minor complaint:

I went there for lunch this week and ordered the Toro sashimi (my favorite sashimi). The waitress says "sir, the market price on that is $44 for a full order". I said "fine, please bring it". At the time, she was training another waitress. I went there again Sunday night and the waitress which had been training was now my waitress. She remembered me. Anyway, among some other items I order the Toro sashimi and the Hamachi sashimi. I was with two other people. She brings one piece of each. For the three of us. I said "um... mam, I'm sorry, I wanted a full order of each". Again she says "sir, a ful order of Toro sashimi is $44". What the hell?? Do I look poor?

We went to Origami once, two years ago. Sushi was good, not great; service was terrible.

Mikado is our current favorite; have been twice. The Chorishi's Fire roll is da bomb. Last Friday, dinner for 4 w/drinks only cost $140. My only complaint about Mikado is that they don't have yellowtail cheek (pieces). Ya gotta go to Musashino for that.

Kenichi is good, but over-priced. They also like to trick you by offering "freshly ground wasabi flown in from Japan" without telling you that it costs $2.00. Whatever, I'll take the green stuff in the tube, thank you! If you go, don't forget to wear black and bring your attitude.

Both Sushi Sake and Kyoto (downtown) have been cited for health code violations in the last few months.

1990 - Hamachi Kama ??? I am pretty sure they had it last time I was there. A lot of places have that, Toro, or fatty salmon, just not on the menu. And sometimes it makes it in, other times not. Did your server say that they never had it?

Both times I've asked for it, was told they don't have it. Now, I didn't question further as to whether they never have it or were just out of it. Maybe third time's the charm. Hmmmm, might go tonight....

Might as well dig up this thread along with the other ones. You just can't get enough sushi. Hopefully, crayon will stumble upon this and give his take on the restaurants nowadays. As for me, I'll toss out my opinion...

The best place for sushi, but not necessarily Japanese food, is Mikado Ryotei. Consistently good, the sushi never fails to please and neither does the service. The restaurant is small and has a nice ambiance, very ideal place to enjoy sushi.

Of course, the best all-around Japanese restaurant is Musashino. I don't think I need to say anything about it.

Umi in South Austin was a pretty good place to go before I moved up to the Arboretum. Sushi isn't as good as the first two, but it's a pretty good place if you're on that side of town. I have also heard good things about Uchi Sushi, but I have yet to venture down that way.

The Kyoto restaurants aren't necessarily consistent but they are good. Also, there's only one Kyoto left I presume as the Arboretum one now has a sign that reads "Fujiyama", hopefully it'll be run better because I always got a weird feeling going into Kyoto II.

Sushi Sake is probably the weakest of the top Austin sushi restaurants. It never impressed me but it never failed to please either.

Zen sucks. HEB sushi rocks the hell out of anything Zen makes.

I miss Banzai on the Drag.

That is all.

Can't believe the Uchi sucks post. I have eaten at all the places in town, save Mikado (and apparently I need to hit that place up), and Uchi is the best by far.

The atmosphere alone warrants a visit. I had never been to Si Bon as I have no need for high end Frog, but what a cool set up.

The hot rock beef app was incredible (I don't remember funny names real well) as was the tuna sashimi with fried carrot ribbons and mango - quite possibly the best thing I have ever eaten...we ordered another one after we had finished the rest of our order.

The service was excellent, although I have known the waiter for several years from Sullivan's, Kenichi and Reed's, so that may be why, but all of his recommendations were spot on. Can't speak to the price as I had a dumb trust fund bimbo taking me out.
