Best Sports Movie?

Not the best, but I feel like The Longest Yard deserves a mention at least. The original of course.

Beat me to it by one minute...

Car Racing: Grand Prix
Surfing: Endless Summer, Riding Giants
Motorcyling: On Any Sunday
Overall: Field of Dreams, Pride of the Yankees, Hoosiers, Bull Durham

Chariots of Fire wins for me.

I'm probably the one who thinks this (and I'm a big basketball fan and played for a really small school in HS), but I really didn't like Hoosiers.

in no particular order....
Bull Durham
The Longest Yard(burt reynold's one )
Tin Cup
Hoosiers
We Are Marshall
Raging Bull
Field of Dreams
The Natural
Slap Shot
Coach of the Year
8 Seconds
Rocky
Invincible

Hoosiers, Remember the Titans, and Major League. I can't believe Major League isn't getting more nominees.

"Juuuuuust a bit outside!"

Just curious why some believe Rudy to be so great?

I truly believe there is nothing that unique about that story that doesn't happen at schools across the country with countless walk-on's that get treated like crap while they hope for their one chance.

Not knocking the guy and his not giving up, but had this story taken place at Iowa State instead of ND would anyone have cared?

The thing that is great about Rudy is he was too small, too slow, too weak, and too dumb. He had heard it his whole life. It was great because all he wanted was to go to Notre Dame but he was not smart enough. He finally got to Notre Dame and walked on simply because he tried harder than everyone else. He gave more effort than the rest of the team combined. He was not even going to get to dress because he was so bad but the team respected him so much they gave their jerseys so he could play. Then the team made sure he got on the field. Then he did great things and still is the last Notre Dame player carried off the field. Its great because he has nothing and makes himself into something.

I might be mistaken Stat, but I think the name Hoosiers is more a reference the state being named the Hoosier state and that the movie centered on the story of a small school in INDIANA succeeding in the state high school basketball tournament in a state that absolutely is a hotbed for basketball than after a college basketball team. Could be wrong on that though. The state could have gotten the nickname from the college team.

As far as Rudy, neither you nor Hobbes have said anything that doesn't happen on college campuses on a regular basis. Kids that are too small, slow, etc...are treated like crap and hope to set foot on the field for just a play or two. Hell, if it wasn't for Regis Philbin pushing the movie it would have ended up on Lifetime.

Tell me when they make a movie about Freddie.

Most walkons at least get to dress. And most walkons are not the inspiration to their team. Rudy was not like most walkons. He came in knowing he was never going to put on a real uniform and never touch the field or run out of the tunnel. Thats what makes it great. He knew he was never going to dress or play but he still stuck with it and inspired his team.

I like Hoosiers (the scene where Shooter runs the picket fence is one of the best scenes in any sports movie), but it's not in my top 5. Too many weird things going on, most notably all the Myra Fleener scenes. Why is she even in the movie, and why would Hackman be remotely attracted to her?

Yes it is horrible because he got to play and got carried off the field even though that is what actually happened. And yes he did inspire his team. Do you think they would have carried him off the field if they were not proud and inspired by him.

But they still had a worse record than the prior two years. Guess they will make a movie soon about the autistic kid who hit all those threes in the basketball game. Didn't they do a show about movies like this on American Dad?
