best place for cocktails in Austin?

Well I'm getting older, and it appears that Trudy's just doesn't cut it anymore as a place to "have some drinks" with women anymore. As much as my wallet will hate me for it, something else in my jeans drives my decision making. That said, where are the best places to have drinks in Austin? I'm talking a cut (or two) above Crown & Anchor.

Try the Iron Cactus' north location. Or study up on your wines and head to Reed's or a similar place that has a decent wine list.

SFA, Ringside, Changs, Brown Bar, Tavern

Puddle,
I live right up the street from there on Greystone, moved in about two months ago, but I've never been. I'm curious to know how it is.

By the way, I owe you a phone call re: life insurance. How does next week look to you?

P/C...didn't I give Chitwood as a reference

I've only eaten at Mesa Hills. Ok food. I did notice there was a decent crowd at the bar. Seemed like an older crowd, but I hear it's a cool little place for drinks.

Guys, I go to Mesa a few nights a week, usually after the Boulevard around the corner closes, because Mesa is open and has food until 2. There's definitely an older crowd there for happy hour (including a loudmouth aggy that owes me $100 from the game!

) but after 11 or so the crowd is a pretty good mix of ages. On Tuesday, they do one of those service industry nights to try and get people from the area restaurants to come by, and sometimes that draws some hotties.

It's not a bad place, but it's not a place I would take a date or go to expect to meet women, either. I am usually already on my way to being drunk when I go there, and usually have 4 or 5 people with me, too. Maybe I'll see y'all there sometime.

Ask for Shawnacee or Greg if you go in!

"have some drinks with women"

If this is your goal do not take a woman to Mesa Hills Cafe. Let's just say it isn't the classiest joint around.

Well, I showed up in there last night pretty well lit up, so if any of y'all were there and I offended you, I apologize!

EB22, I think I mentioned as well that Mesa is not a place for dates or to meet chicks, but just to go swig down booze.

And if any of you go up there and see an obnoxious redheaded chick with glasses----RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about that Durkee. Since you hang out at Mesa Hills and the Blvd. you must know "The Professor". I think he is an old Prof at UT. He is an old guy who looks like Walter Mathow who drinks at the Blvd until they kick him out and then he heads over to Mesa Hills.

Yeah, I know him and I can't stand that disgusting old pervert. We call him the "Chair Sniffer," because any time a girl gets up from her bar stool he will reach over and rub his hand on the chair and smells it, like he's going to get a whiff of puss or something. He also "accicentally" will stumble into chicks so he can cop a feel. I'm embarrassed that he has anything to do with The University. He's a big racist, too.

It's the truth, HD! The only reason he hasn't been banned from the bar is that he's so freaking old that they figure he's about due for his dirtnap so they cut him some slack. We've been trying to get him banned because he's so disgusting. All the waitresses have to make wide berth for him when he's walking toward them or he will try to grab some tit or ***.

Lest I forget, one night at closing he got locked into the Boulevard. Nobody knew he was still in there because he was in the women's room checking out the "cherry box."

He's a real charmer, that one.

Brown Bar is nice (fine *** waitress there) and the one with no name attached to Spaghetti Warehouse.

One that I hate is Oslo. Racist mofos. Maybe its just the cops they hire or that one short dorky *** guy with glasses that helps run the place but nothing but hate for the non Caucasian male. Maybe he was just jealous since we were getting more action from the women than he was. Never have I experienced something like that in Austin. Needless to say I am never going back and will be sure to pass the word.

decent little bar for pre-4th st cocktails. Not a place you want to stay all night, but has some charm.

The restaurant underwhelmed. The decor is solid and is seemingly a great date place, but the food left something to be desired. Nothing bad, just unimpressive. I may give it another shot, however, some time down the line.

I have a couple of friends who work for a law CTW in that building so I meet them for happy hour (The Thistle) once a week or so. There is not much of a happy hour crowd, but its an ok place. During happy hour they have really cheap appetizers.
If you want a place to have happy hour without noise where you can talk in a somewhat upscale setting, it might be good.

On the northside, NXNW, Iron Cactus, and Cool River are all pretty decent places. Bahama Breeze has a huge bar, and Z Tejas is nice as well.

Bahama Breeze should be called Bahama Cheese.

They probably don't have an old-*** man rummaging through the discarded tampons, though.
