best heavy metal song ever?

Fair enough.

At least we can agree that "Lick My Love Pump" is one of the best metal piano solos of all time.

VH1 did the "40 Greatest Metal Songs" some time back. I question whether some of these are metal or just hard rock (there is overlap with their "100 Greatest Hard Rock" song list). Overall, it's a decent list, though:

40. "Breaking the Law" - Judas Priest
• 39. "I'm Eighteen" - Alice Cooper
• 38. "Balls to the Wall" - Accept
• 37. "Smoke on the Water" - Deep Purple
• 36. "Wait and Bleed" - Slipknot
• 35. "Metal Health" - Quiet Riot
• 34. "Paranoid" - Black Sabbath
• 33. "High 'N' Dry " - Def Leppard
• 32. "Thunder Kiss '65" - White Zombie
• 31. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions
• 30. "Epic" - Faith No More
• 29. "Caught in a Mosh" - Anthrax
• 28. "The Beautiful People" - Marilyn Manson
• 27. "Run to the Hills" - Iron Maiden
• 26. "Refuse/Resist" - Sepultura
• 25. "Cowboys From Hell" - Pantera
• 24. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" - AC/DC
• 23. "Freak on a Leash" - Korn
• 22. "Enter Sandman" - Metallica
• 21. "Paradise City" - Guns 'N' Roses
• 20. "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister
• 19. "Man in the Box" - Alice in Chains
• 18. "Slave to the Grind" - Skid Row
• 17. "Live Wire" - Motley Crue
• 16. "Walk" - Pantera
• 15. "Bulls on Parade" - Rage Against the Machine
• 14. "Toxicity" - System of a Down
• 13. "Rainbow in the Dark" - Dio
• 12. "Bring tha Noize" - Anthrax & Public Enemy
• 11. "Peace Sells" - Megadeth
• 10. "Ace of Spades" - Motorhead
• 9. "Crazy Train" - Ozzy Osbourne
• 8. "Raining Blood" - Slayer
• 7. "The Number of the Beast" - Iron Maiden
• 6. "Detroit Rock City" - KISS
• 5. "You've Got Another Thing Coming" - Judas Priest
• 4. "Back in Black" - AC/DC
• 3. "Master of Puppets" - Metallica
• 2. "Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns 'N' Roses
• 1. "Iron Man" - Black Sabbath

WHile I like "Iron Man," I agree there are better songs by Sabbath. Just go back to the first album and listen to "N.I.B," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," and "Warning,", for example. Or move forward a little and listen to "Snowblind."

I was surprised not to see more Def Leppard in the Top 40. They may not have had the best heavy metal song of all time, but certainly had the best heavy metal stripper song of all time. And given all the chit chat about Taylor Swift around here lately, we certainly can not let this rendition of it, a future classic for generations to come, go unrecognized. Somebody mentioned that they wished Taylor had more of slutty persona like Britney Spears. Well here is about as close as it will probably ever get.

With clear props to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, I'm surprised there aren't more Judas Priest votes. In my mind, the Priest is the bridge between the more bluesy/psychedelia-influenced heavy metal that came before them and everything after.

You can't talk about "heavy metal" in a modern context and all its various sub-genres without tipping your hat to Judas Priest. British Steel, literally and figuratively, forged a new meaning for "heavy metal."

Led Zeppelin is not a metal band. I love Zepp, have a ton of their stuff, and it may be the greatest rock band of all time. But their music is blues rock/hard rock, not metal.

I've been giving this some thought as I was a devout metalhead as a youngster and still consider that my primary musical persuasion:

I really, really like the following:

Motley Crue - Ten Seconds to Love. This song is everything that glam metal purports itself to be.

Ratt - You're in Love (the whole "Invasion of Your Privacy" LP is allsome - this is the best album cover I've seen IMO)

Krokus - Stayed Up All Night

Slayer - pretty much everything off of the "South of Heaven" release

Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots

Judas Priest - The Ripper

Scorpions - Blackout

Megadeth - Pretty much every song off of the "Rust in Peace" LP - to me this is the best heavy metal release ever, just edging out the Slayer LP I cited above

Metallica - Jump in the Fire - This song has the most awesome guitar solo I've ever heard. However, I really don't care for the band anymore because they totally sold out after Master of Puppets and basically gave the bird to all of the hardcore fans that sustained them when MTV and the rest of the musical mainstream would not so much as acknowledge them.

Anthrax - pretty much everything off of the "Spreading the Disease" release

Guns 'n' Roses - You Could Be Mine

I know that is more than just a song. But, considering all of the metal that's out there in it's countless permutations, this is really boiling it down.

River Runs Red by Life of Agony is still one of the best metal songs and albums imo.

In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth is pretty solid too.

Check out Legs Diamond's "Out on Bail". That is a badass song that I don't think too many folks have had the pleasure of listening to. They are a band with history down here in San Antone, so the DJ's on KZEP play two or three of their deep cuts from time to time - which I really appreciate.

How in the hell is zeppelin getting votes. Good band, not metal. Also why so many mentions of iron maiden, and not one vote for The Trooper.

I'll do 5 in random order.
Master of Puppets
War Pigs
The Trooper
something off of ride the lightning(for whom the bell tolls, fade to black, creeping death)
Something off of the first 2 system of a down cds

While they are definitely a progenitor to heavy metal, and as their name suggests, were heavier than just about any band of their time, Led Zeppelin is not "Heavy Metal". Black Sabbath was probably the first completely heavy metal band. For this reason I would say Iron Man is the #1 metal song, just because it was the first to be widely played.

But as far as best, I'd have to consider Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast, or Wasted Years. Or one of my personal favorite band Metallica's Seek and Destroy, For Whom the Bell Tolls or Master of Puppets.

And then there's Slayer...
