Best BBQ Sauce

great que doesn't need sauce, but, i do like it and often use it, depending on the situtaion. with that said, i'm still waiting to hear an answer to:

"are you looking for a recipe for sauce or a store bought sauce? "

Just kidding, I too would like to see some of the recommendations people put here

I agree, good Q doesn't need sauce. But I like the way sauce taste, so I'll eat about half my meat w/o sauce, and half with sauce. I really like to make my own, but of the store brands - Stubb's original sauce, hands down.

i like sauces with alot of mustard, right now my favorite store sauce is Peach Habanero from HEB. It's really hot and pretty sweet. Next time I go to salt lick I'm going to buy a bottle of their stuff it is my favorite

if you are looking to make bbq with home made sauce right now, then it may be a bit late. i have several recipes that i use depending on what i am cooking -- tomato based sauce with some rootbeer for smoked chicken, vinegary mustard sauce for pulled pork, spicy sweet for pork baby backs, etc. i'll share them all but if you're wanting to start tonight, it may be a bit late to get started.

if you're in a pinch and really want to use sauce on your que then ruby's has the best store bought version. second would be salt lick habanero sauce. both are avaiable at central market.

You are all PUNK *** CHUMPS for not mentioning Earl's; both the Mustard & Red sauce.

Academy has it, along with the rib rub & others in his line of Meat Products. The Tyler Rose.

For the sweet stuff, I like Sweet Baby Ray's, all varieties. I find myself taking Stubb's & adding honey to it...

I am a HUGE fan of the "Austin's Own" brand on my chicken. You can get it at HEB. As far as Brisket and Sausage, has to be Opie's sauce, available at Opies on 290 west near spicewood/burnett. Best BBQ around there as well.

Store bought:

Sweet Baby Rays
Stubb's
Rudy's

Homemade:

1 part KC Masterpiece
1 part Orang Juice
add honey to taste.

Great for a rib dipping sauce.

I can't believe so many around here like that sweet sauce stuff! Are you kidding me? Wait. Maybe some of your are from Mizzouri or something. BBQ should be bold and a tad spicy. Other than that it can be acidic and tangy. Sweet is out as far as I'm concerned. You can also keep your honeybaked/glazed hams. That stuff is worthless. I know a guy that does a wood smoked ham (Nothing sweet, JUST smokey) that will literally drive you crazy... you can taste the smoke like you stuck your head in a pit to eat the stuff

To me, the list of great BBQ sauces begins and ends with Salt Lick. Nothing else even compares in my book.

Otherwise, I like to make my own sauces.

I wish I had the recipe for what Cooper's in Llano makes. Thin and vinegary. I can get it close but it is still not Cooper's.

Salt Lick sucks. I like Rudy's pretty well.and I agree with the person who said Head Country and I don't care if it is in Oklahoma.

I bought some Stubbs BBQ sauce at the Central Market last night and it was delicious.

thanks again and keep those suggestions coming...

Bayou, here is the root beer one I use sometimes for chicken:
1 cup root beer
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon light molasses
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Combine all ingredients in pan. Bring to boil, then reduce until it gets to the consistency you want. Salt and pepper to taste.

I use it along this dry rub on the chicken, which gives a nice spicy contrast with the kind of sweet sauce:

1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon Hungarian sweet paprika
1 tablespoon (packed) dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
