Baylor Series—Horns win Series!

The Texas Longhorns host the Baylor Bears for a 3 game Big 12 Conference series this weekend.

Baylor has been pretty lousy in recent years. This year, they've been swept by Indiana and UH. HOWEVER, the won / split a 3 game series with Tech--same as us. They got Tech at home, but that's still a good showing. Their pitching is not awful. Baylor's main problem has been scoring runs.

For Texas to have any realistic shot at making the tournament series like this weekend are critical. The Horns need to finish in the top three in the Big XII, that will all but guarantee a berth regardless of the ugly losses or average record.

Making the tournament isn't a concern. Hosting a Regional is.

We need to be Top 16 in RPI as a general measure of whether we'll get a Regional. Obviously, we're not there now, but we may be by the end of the year. Even if we're slightly out of the Top 16 RPI, if one of the Top 16 RPI has lousy facilities, or the town has some huge other event in town (i.e. Indiana State last year), we may still get to host.

here you go Phil. Ace getting his opportunity.

Those 3 appear to be our 3 best starters at this point in the year--LBJ, Whitehead, Grubbs. That doesn't mean someone like Hurley can't work his way back up into a weekend starter position again, or someone like Fontenot can't rise up to the task. However, we may need some of these guys like Fontenot and Hurley as weekend long-relievers.

Grubbs: only 4 walks in 20.2 innings pitched. Fastball sits around 90-91 mph (can hit higher on the radar gun in spurts). Sinker/Slider ground out pitcher with good command. Max stuggled with command/control last year, but he seems to be over that now with such a low number of walks.

Ace W: Mr. reliable. Fans have been wondering for a long time why we haven't been seeing more of Ace. He looks nothing like Shaw, but his pitching style kinda reminds me just a little bit of Big Red. Selvig might be his young protege / padawan.

LBJ!!!!

Makes a nice fielding play to prevent a base hit up the gut. Gets the batter out at first.

Man on second.

Two away.
