Baylor game

The players are to blame for their lack of heart but when I see Kansas' offense moving non-stop and creating open space, and then I look at our offense........
I'm not asking for his head, but that falls on Barnes.

My high school team had more movement than this team.
No exaggeration.

I could speculate on many things, but all I can surely tell is that this team sucks all around. No offense, crappy defense, ****** coaching. I think Barnes is the best coach we have ever had, but this bunch and his lack of offensive imagination has brought out the worst of their abilities...

Seeing Barnes sitting quietly on bench with his head in his hand with 10 minutes to play was very defeating for me. It's real easy to talk about players giving up...but, the Head Coach giving up is as disheartening as it can get.

Hook'em!!!

Perhaps it really isn't coaching. This doesn't appear to be just about finding the right wiring diagram, or a light bulb coming on for these players. I have just about come to the conclusion they just aren't that good and it appears no one is coming to change things before next season.

It amazes me that so many people far more knowledgeable than I missed on these guys. Not one, or two of them, but essentially all of them.

Everyone ******* about the offense and there is plenty to ***** about. But normally a Rick Barnes team can play D. Baylor again shoots over 50%. You just don't win when the other team shoots > 50% and gets 8-10 pts off run outs a game because your team can't get back in transition.

Go look where these programs were at the end of 2003. Texas coming off the best season ever, TJ Ford had given a face to the program, won every award, Final 4 appearance. As for Baylor, the following is taken from wikipedia, and yes wiki can be made up, but from what I remember, pretty accurate. After reading, I find it even more embarrassing that Scott Drew has developed a program better than Rick Barnes has. Read on...

After a memorial service for Dennehy in San Jose, California, Bliss asked to meet with school investigators. At that meeting, he was told that Dennehy's girlfriend had told them Bliss paid for the sections of Dennehy and Herring's tuition not covered by financial aid. Bliss confessed to making the payments, estimated at $7,000—a major violation of NCAA rules.[4] Two members of Baylor's 2001-02 squad told the Dallas Morning News that Bliss and several members of his staff had been present at a pickup game involving star recruit Harvey Thomas during his official visit to Baylor—another major NCAA rules violation. It also emerged that Bliss and his staff knew about rampant marijuana and alcohol abuse among Baylor players, but did not follow procedures for reporting failed drug tests. Under the circumstances, Bliss was forced to resign on August 8, 2003.[4]
After Bliss resigned, it emerged that he had told players to make up a story about Dennehy being a drug dealer in order to pay for his tuition. The story was intended to serve as a cover-up for Bliss paying Dennehy's tuition. The conversations were tape-recorded by one of Bliss' assistants, Abar Rouse. Bliss had threatened to fire Rouse if he didn't go along with the scheme, leading Rouse to record the conversations. Rouse later sued his attorney for releasing the tapes to investigators. Bliss later called his actions in this phase of the incident "despicable."
Internal and NCAA investigations during 2005 revealed further violations. Besides paying parts of Dennehy and Herring's tuition, Bliss admitted that he'd concealed under-the-table payments to Herring and lied to both the NCAA and Baylor investigators. He also admitted to telling assistant coaches to file false expense reports and lie to Baylor investigators.
Bliss was slapped with a 10-year show-cause order for what the NCAA called "a blatant and sweeping disregard" of NCAA rules. This means that until 2015, no NCAA member school can hire Bliss in any athletic role without seeking permission from the NCAA infractions committee. Bliss' prospective employer would have to show cause for why it should not be sanctioned unless his duties were limited. The penalty is the most severe punishment the NCAA can hand a coach. Most major schools will not even consider hiring a coach with an outstanding "show-cause" order on his record. Combined with the evidence that Bliss may have engaged in extortion, witness tampering and obstruction of justice (although he has never been criminally charged), it is highly unlikely that Bliss will ever return as a college coach. Ash was hit with a five-year show-cause order. Another assistant, Rodney Belcher, was hit with a seven-year show-cause order for lying about recruiting violations committed in the course of bringing Dennehy to Baylor.

You guys were quick to pick from that dishonored squad too, as I recall. Lighting matches in the street won't convince anyone in the house that the house is on fire. Sour grapes and hot-seat coach blustering.

Burly is correct. Much of this is just sour grapes from us.
I actually admire how Baylor has rebuilt its basketball program since their sad and corrupt period with Bliss.

You have to respect them for that. They have beat us now, how many times in a row - 4?
This is an exciting time for them. Thats why we see Baylor fans boastfully running over here to register on this message board.
And I respect that. I don't ever go to their message board but I can see why Baylor fans would want to come to ours.

But this has nothing to do with how this Longhorn team went from #1 in the country to unranked.
Every game is a struggle; even against the weakest teams.
This team has big problems.

Yes, this team is extremely dissappointing. The individual talents that were obvious earlier in the season haven't gelled into a cohesive unit. Our team offense and defense are absolutely terrible. Other teams have improved in these areas over the course of the season and Texas hasn't, which is why we are now losing to teams that we should beat when looking at talent alone.

This does fall on the coaches. However, you have to look no further than UNC and Kentucky as the two extremes when you are trying to reload with a bunch of talented freshman. Its not like Roy Williams is now a terrible coach and Calipari the best of all time. Sometimes it clicks if the players are truly supremely talented, their games are as complementary as the guys at Kentucky, and they fit within coach's system to a "T" (yes, you can argue the coach should just change their system, but its not that easy to do during the course of the season).

It also doesn't hurt to have two guys that are great PG's that can score, pass, and defend in Wall and Bledsoe. Neither Texas nor UNC have a single one of those players. All of the recent truly successful Texas teams had a PG guy like that. The Texas teams with Royal Ivey running the point were good, but not true national title threats. I can even go further, and suggest that almost all college title contenders have an excellent PG. Just to name a few, UNC and Mich St. in '09, Kansas and Memphis in '08, Florida and Ohio St. in '07, Florida and UCLA in '06, UNC and Illinois in '05. All had great PG play. With all else being roughly equal, an excellent PG is the common denominator for success

Not to say Ward is that player, but I am extremely excited to have him back next year. Losing his ability to penetrate, shoot, and play some serious defense was a bigger loss than most of us would likely have believed. No other guards on our roster can do all three of those things. Potentially adding Cory Joseph next year could be a big help. But more than likely we won't have an answer to this problem until 2011 with Kabongo.

Ward had little to no effect on the team. He's a lackluster shooter and a lackluster ball handler. And HE IS NOT A PG! Neither is Bradley, FWIW. He would be a worse choice than Mason.

I don't think Ward is necessarily the answer at the point, but Bradley is not either.

Bradley is a 2 guard, pure and simple. Maybe Ward is too, but he showed in the Duke game that he has the ability to get to the rim against a good defensive team. He seemed to flash some of the same ability early this season, but not to near the same extent.

Ward's career shooting percentages are not great, but he looks to have a very nice shot. It seemed that Barnes had Ward on a shorter leash last year than Hamilton was on this year. He just never got in a good rythym, and didn't really even have a chance to turn it around after a slow start shooting this year. Nonetheless, he still brings a heck of a lot more to the table offensively than Mason and Balbay.

By the way, does anybody realize that Jai Lucas shot 46% on 3-pointers this year but only shot 26 of them? I never was too impressed with his play this year, but wasn't Lucas on the all-freshman team in the SEC two years ago? Does the SEC suck that bad or is did he just regress also?

Reading crap like that just incites Baylor fans to rub it in even more. Drew is NOTHING like Bliss.

What proof do you have that he is a slimebag? What has he done that other coaches have not? I suppose you are referring to hiring Dwon Clifton, John Wall's coach? Other coaches have done the same thing and it is not illegal. We did not get John Wall, so what is the problem?
Drew sent out a flier years ago that said, "Which of these coaches has signed a McDonalds All-American?" It had Bobby Knight and Billy GIllispie with red X's over their faces and a photo of Drew.
Again. Not illegal, and not terribly offensive. Bobby Knight had a problem with it but he has lots of problems.
Face it, Baylor does not have Santa Rita #1, so there has to be some extra hustle and creativity to attract recruits.

I think rickysrun's point is not that Drew = Bliss but that Texas was so much better positioned in 2003 than Baylor that he finds it incredible that Drew has built a more successful program since then.

Full Flask you do James a disservice by calling him a "solid player." He's an all-time great at UT and one of the five best players in the nation.

I never said he was a player of the year candidate, I said he was a top five player in the nation. I don't need the politics of being on a top 5 team that won Tyler Hansbrough the award. He certainly is not Kevin Durant. No one in history is. He literally does not have a valid comparison in history--nobody plays like him. Let's stop crucifying great players for not being as good as the best college basketball player ever.

But how can you say James disappears? He only disappears when he is on the bench with foul trouble. He is impossible to guard for college players, especially when he is hitting from three. And he's definitely closer to Durant than James Thomas. In fact he's kind of a combination of both, haha.

I agree with what Bierce said about the rickysrun post. Baylor fans should lighten up. It seems to me a complement to what Drew has done at BU. I personally don't care for the guy, but I don't think anyone is comparing him to Bliss for heaven's sake. He hasn't even strayed into Jim Haller territory as far as we know.
