According to Brian Davis in today's DMN:

If the A&M track and baseball teams do well this weekend, the Aggies can win the Lone Star Showdown trophy for the first time in the award's four-year history. In true laid-back fashion, the Longhorns will act like it's no big deal. Oh, but it is.

Did I somehow miss the play this trophy was given the first three times when Texas won it???

Sorry, DMN, it's only a big deal to those who wanted it most in the first place, and only because they haven't won it - at least that's how I read it.

And if at least one of the Texas track teams and the baseball team do well, Texas could win its 4th Lone Star Showdown in a row. Works both ways.

A&M beat writers and Aggie fans are the only ones making a big deal about this. I wonder why.

Considering the number of posts I've seen on hornfans and other horn sites about this topic I would say we want it just as bad.

Screw aggy

Considering you have not read what the posts say about it I would disagree. In fact, if you go back and look at past years when we won it, we did not really care much. Sorry agsy. Enjoy it though, whatever it looks like.

For a million dollars I could not tell you what this trophy looks like. I hope Deloss has found it. He did not know where it was being kept.

I heard a clerk-typist for the custodial staff was using it as a paperweight somewhere in the bowels of Bellmont Hall.

I cannot say I have ever read an article over there that included that info. Not that those articles did not exist, I believe you that they did. I have not read them and if I did, I would think it was dumb.

You may not care about the trophy, but if you don't care that A&M is on the verge of having a winning record against Texas in all sports for the year then there's something wrong with you.

It wasn't a big deal winning that trophy the first 3 or 4 years because we're supposed to beat those turds. It's a big deal to lose it.

I disagree. Winning or losing that trophy does not mean anything. The University of Texas competes to be the best in the nation, not to be better than Texas A&M. That's their m.o. Who cares if they win it? Let them have their greatest athletic accomplishment in 10 years. We don't have to stoop to their level by getting our underpants in a twist over some contest that they invented.

Lets see this century :

National Championships :
2002 - Baseball
2005 - Baseball
2005 - Football
2001 - Men's Swimming
2002 - Men's Swimming
2003 - Men's Swimming
2006 - Women's Indoor Track
2005 - Women's Outdoor Track

I think A&M has won some individual championships, but no team. So, I'm pretty comfortable with not giving a damn about this trophy. We have plenty of others.

DeLoss has not been shy about his indifference to the whole thing. It's a joke to him. He thought it was a waste of time from the start, but of course Bill Byrne couldn't get over his penis envy long enough to realize that that's exactly what it is. State Farm promised Texas a lot of cash for their participation, and DeLoss said fine, if it will get Byrne to stop whining, let's do it. He probably could not even tell you how the contest works, and his department has won it three times. But it's all Byrne and the Aggie faithful can talk about, and they have yet to win it even once.

I agree with Vacantly Occupied. It is significant that we are behind aggy. This should be a wake up call for our programs; an overall losing record to such a mediocre school is not acceptable.

Or maybe people need to understand that this is a contest manufactured by A&M to mislead everyone, including themselves, into thinking A&M might somehow better as an athletic program.

Women's sports are where the Aggies have racked up their points over Texas this year, due to a lot of reasons (new coaches, having athletes taking a year off to prepare for the Olympics, etc.), but I hardly think it is indicative of a serious problem. Softball is the one women's sport at Texas that I think is in need of a major overhaul. The rest of the sports, Texas is regularly better than the Aggies. Things just fell in their favor in many of them this year.

And it is worth noting that Texas has not lost the Lone Star Showdown just yet. A series win in baseball (certainly possible) and a better finish than A&M in the men's track and field championship (happened at the indoors, so it could happen again) seals the deal for the Horns. If Texas did manage to win it, does it change anything that I said above? No. Therefore, winning or losing the freaking Lone Star Showdown is only a big deal to people who choose to make it one.

The fact that it is even a contest shows that we need improvement.

The women's side certainly is where we have lost ground. And like most, I care a lot more about the bigger revenue sports. However if they are keeping score, I would prefer to beat those asswipes - even if it is tiddlywinks.

Which program generates more money? Which sells the most merchandise nationwide? Which has more national name, logo and team recognition? Which is discussed on national tv and radio by pundits?

I think the main purpose of the competition is to create more interest in sports that are generally overlooked, which is a good thing. The flaw in the competition, though, is that it is set up between us and just one other school. A similar competition that involved the entire Big 12 would be more interesting, with an annual Big 12 all-sports champion crowned at the end of each sports year.

They do have that type of competition for the conference, it is called the conference championship. Besides, we don't play every team every year in every sport. Even if football is the only one we don't, that is enough.

I would like to see Texas Tech and Baylor included in the points and competition. If aggy feels inferior often as is, imagine the outcome when they see they are closer to being on par with Baylor than with us or Tech.

Anyone else find it ironic that $Bill was the one who didn't want to focus solely on "our friends from the state capital" when first named AD, yet this was HIS brainchild??

Geez, the aggy logic...err...mentality...err..lifestyle makes my brain hurt

we get the point by virtue of the series win, not the sweep. we are now tied with aggy, waiting on the outcome, today, of men's and women's track and field. aggy women will beat us. it is going to be tight on the men's side. men's and women's each count for one point...so, if we split, we will be tied for the trophy. if we lose both, aggy takes it.
